Discovered yesterday that Masto embeds do not work on our Drupal site -- as in they are not visible on the public facing page, although they appear fine in the back-end editor. Anybody here know what might be the issue? I embed other <iframe> stuff all the time and have never had this problem before. Any and all suggestions welcome.

@Archnemysis
Thx for responding. I had to check that out. The embed code IS in the source, just not rendering on the page. Pics below should illustrate the issue pretty well, I think.

embed properly rendering in back-end editor
embed code in back-end editor (in "source" mode)
embed not showing up on the public facing page

Is there a word for "creator owned" co-ops where the ownership isn't held by employees, but isn't held by the consumer either? IE. what is social.coop? Does platform co-op cover it, or is there something more specific in wide use already?

I guess creator co-op is fine, I just don't know if it's actually in wide spread use.

GuerillaOntologist,
@GuerillaOntologist@social.coop avatar

@sam I guess I'd call social.coop a consumer co-op that runs a platform, in the same way that a food co-op is made up of customer-members (usually) and runs a brick and mortar store. Or it could be conceptualized as a "shared service co-op" with social media being the service. I'm still unconvinced that "platform co-op" is it's own category, like worker- or producer co-ops.

I've never heard anybody use "creator co-op," and to me that would probably just be another name for a producer co-op.

GuerillaOntologist,
@GuerillaOntologist@social.coop avatar

@sam I believe the name for that is "shared service co-op." For instance, a co-op whose purpose is to provide low cost accounting services for it's members. Basically, all the members of the co-op pitching in to buy a service they all need together, at a lower per-person price. Jim at GEO is very into this model of co-ops.

@jonobie @sam
The types of co-op are only limited by our own imaginations! My mother, for instance, was part of a babysitting co-op when I was a kid that ran entirely on poker chips and strawberry daiquiris 😂

@Hoss @sun
Lol. You don't understand it. I've got a degree in neoclassical econ and let me tell you, MMT is far superior as both a description of actual financial system behavior, and as a predictive theory. MMT is based on accounting identities and studying the way banks actually work. While I was taught banks simply intermediate between savers and borrowers, transferring $ from one to the other, that's not how banks actually work. Talk to a banker if you don't understand.

I feel bad for the person at church this morning with the "Capitalism For All" bumper sticker who had to sit there through Acts 4:32-35

"The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common."

GuerillaOntologist,
@GuerillaOntologist@social.coop avatar

@ntnsndr Sure, but everybody in that building actually lives their lives in essentially the same way materially right? In my experience, the communal lifestyle of the early church is rather far removed from the experience of most believers, whether they announce their politico-economic preferences on their car bumper or not. Practically, what difference does it make when everyone lives the same individualistic, materialistic lives? Are not all equally falling short of the example set in Acts 4?

Or maybe, just maybe, the CEOs are also large shareholders in their companies, thanks to modern compensation standards.

Boards keep voting to overpay CEOs because of Compensation Consulting firms, who they hire whenever they are looking for a new CEO. The CC firms tell them what the average compensation package is, and they - figuring that if you want above avg performance you need above avg pay - pay above avg. Thus the avg increases regardless of performance.

Also you have your interlocking boards of directors, where CEO A sits on CEO B's board and vice versa and they both vote to pay each other more.

@ntnsndr Apart from my critiques of crypto in general, this example highlights a major problem for anyone interested in doing democracy on a public, permissionless blockchain: there's no good way to verify identities to prevent sock-puppeting, as this commenter points out. If you're only interested in 1 token = 1 vote (tokenocracy) then you don't need to care about how many wallets one person is voting with, but if you're a 1 person = 1 vote type then this is a big problem, seems to me.

TIL about the 9 Rs. They are:

Refuse
Rethink
Reduce
Reuse
Repair
Refurbish
Remanufacture
Recover
Recycle

GuerillaOntologist,
@GuerillaOntologist@social.coop avatar

@PaulGrahamRaven
It's in the air. I've always insisted that people needed to focus more on the first two of the traditional three Rs, and less on the last one (which is mainly a sop for the conscious of consumerist liberals imho), but I like these other Rs even better.

Limitarianism The Case Against Extreme Wealth by Ingrid Robeyns

"A powerful case for limitarianism—the idea that we should set a maximum on how much resources one individual can appropriate. A must-read!"
—Thomas Piketty, bestselling author of Capital in the Twenty-First Century
An original, bold, and convincing argument for a cap on wealth by the philosopher who coined the term "limitarianism."
