Independence will be good for Scotland and England. Doing my little bit to push it along. It’s nice to be nice.

Unusual visitor to the Cromarty Firth, Scotland, this morning. The barquantine 'Thalassa'.

Whilst Westminster is very keen to try to eradicate divergent policies in the devolved nations of the UK and get us all to do what England does, it's noticeable that they don't seem to be very eager to enforce the 'best of british' First Past the Post system on Scotland. If they did, the SNP would currently hold something like 80% of the seats in the Scottish Parliament.

What is first thing you want to change after Scotland's Independence Day? I don't mean the change Labour go on about which seems to mean carrying on with the Tory project. No I mean real change relevant for the Scottish people which we can't do as a small part of Westminster.

@IndyRichard Nationalisation of energy generation.
Land reform and break up of big estates.
Reform of emigration to encourage and welcome incomers.
Banning of corporate lobbying in parliament.

Now imagine if the corporate media treated elections in England as they do in Scotland = “Blow to Union as Tories hammered in local elections”.

If anyone has ever taken the trouble to read the comments (when allowed) below any article on Scotland will have realised, many, if not all, readers (they definitely seem to have done so) take a rather different view.

One more for their collection of ‘balanced articles' I suppose, along with Crace, Rowson and many more.

Indyposterboy,

@Wen It's a sad reality that however balanced or non-corporate the Guardian tries to be on almost any other topic, when the subject is Scotland they seem to slide to the right to join the union-at-any-cost crowd.

Maybe they hoped it was possible and have come to realise with current powers that it isn't? Also, not money or spending per se, but control of revenue is required to be able to make the huge changes necessary. After all, even wholly and well-intentioned independent countries, with full control of their own revenue are struggling with this issue.

Here’s a thought: isn’t it possible that with control of 40% of Scotland’s spending and 70% of its revenue reserved by Westminster net zero for Scotland is simply not achievable by ScotGov?

Playing devil’s advocate, rampant unionist Kenny Farquarson would of course say that about any candidate he fears may be effective. Not saying that’s the reason, just that a pinch of salt may be advisable. Very.

Interesting thought. “The First Minister must perforce be an MSP, however there is no reason why one of the SNP’s Westminster MPs cannot stand for leadership of the party while being represented in Holyrood by an interim First Minister until he or she can be elected to Holyrood.”

I wonder if the current SNP stramash may actually be a good thing, reset the party, and get the focus properly back on independence.

Indyposterboy,
@Indyposterboy@mastodon.scot avatar

@Wen Frankly pretty fed up of the focus on mitigation over an actual push for Indy. That’s pulled the carpet out from under Yes groups and taken us no further forward. A lot of hard-won momentum has been lost.

The corporate metro-centric media demonstrating once again that they have little interest in Holyrood and even less knowledge of how it works. But no worries, with almost absolute pro-union control of the media in Scotland they will muddy the waters to frighten voters instead of - you know - actually doing their job of explaining things and informing people.

Coincidentally the view in England that Brexit was a mistake is now at the 63% level of Scotland's Remain vote in 2016. What England wants is what Scotland gets.

“ . . pro-independence parties should not be standing against each other in a first-past-the-post election . . . it really is particularly odd that the SNP and Greens, who are forever waxing lyrical about how much they get on and about the extreme importance of the Bute House Agreement, seem hellbent on knocking lumps out of each other at the general election like never before.”

@ScepticalScot1 Indeed. I don't see the point of any party standing which doesn't have a chance of a win. Gesture politics in a GE under FPTP is such a waste of time.
