@LovesTha@floss.social

A melbournian with many interests:

  • Christian (very liberal)
  • Embedded Linux Engineer
  • Magic The Gathering judge
  • Mechanical keyboard enthusiast (mostly DIY, all very small, Colemak layout)
  • Trying to get into woodworking

All too often I come off as argumentative, I'm working on it but definitely a work in progress. Also frequently more pedantic than I'm comfortable with.

@EatATaco @Moonrise2473 teens do stupid shit without ebikes. And them using one doesn't increase the danger to non users by much.

Cars and trucks do.

@njordomir @Sanctus The safe money is it will also run too infrequently to be a good replacement. Adding 'time waiting for train' to the picture for trips outside of 69am or 37pm and officials wonder why services aren't well used.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@njordomir But all of it is network effect in action: the incremental value of each piece is related to how many pieces already exist.

@NotMyOldRedditName @Hypx I'm not against it, but I didn't think most of the copper in a modern car / EV was in the LV supply wiring, so such a change would be more in the range of a 10% reduction?

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@NotMyOldRedditName Are power carrying wires the bulk of the wires in a car?

And by power I mean more than 5W where wire gauges start to get serious at 12V. An indicator LED is technically needing power, but not enough that wire gauge bulks up.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@NotMyOldRedditName yes, but that is tangential to my point (and your original point). The total length of wires doesn't tell you if they are power or data.

@HexesofVexes @nehal3m Most people should live where walking to a grocery store is easy. Most advocates want to fix a lot of things, not just 1.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@HexesofVexes @nehal3m Cycling commute times can be pretty compeditive in big cities, driving can have very bad worst case speeds where cycling is very stable.

The pictured example in Melbourne is 0:35 to 1:40 by car and 1:25 by bike. Yes the car will frequently win, but you can leave later to guarantee being in the office by 9. (TOA was set to 8:55am)

(The best and fastest is cycle to local station and catch the train)

@_sideffect @Zagorath We all agree you got fucked.

But this community thinks you didn't just get fucked by your employer but by zoning and planning and such too. Better zoning and infrastructure would have you looking at a 10m cycle plus a 15m train ride to the office of the employer that fucked you.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@jakehamilton Everything up to date using the latest flows is an unreasonable ask for such a large repo.

But a header flag for 'outdated methods used' can help newbs know that the example they are looking at is not one to follow.

It would help encourage people to make sure new things are modern.

Y'all I just made myself feel so old, hubs looked up top 100 music from 2001, 2011, 2021, and today and the amount of music I could recognize decreased by significantly. I recognized probably 70% of 2001 and decreasing as I went on. BUT I blame the internet, I can listen to exactly the kind of music I want with no dependence on the radio, but also I'm old!

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@RickiTarr If you can recognise a decent amount of music that was released in 2021 you are doing very well. Particularly if a healthy % is by artists who weren't producing music in 2011 or 2001.

You are right to blame the Internet, it has shattered the monoculture (as much as such a thing ever really existed).

But it can also be that old people listen to old bands.

Stupid econ question:

So it looks like a lot of remaining inflation is rent. In that case, wouldn't you want to lower rates to increase home-building and home-ownership in order to reduce rent pricing?

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@ZachWeinersmith If access to funds to buy/build was actually the problem, then yes.

But at least in the far south west psuedo state of Australia the reason rents/purchasing costs are high is because developers enjoy having them high.

Building enough public housing to keep housing costs in check through having real competition is the only way to really solve things.

You may have noticed: As I study Linux's code I keep writing "(rabbithole)"!

Linux consists of numerous small components which are mostly self-contained (less so for [un]loading modules), but where they're not we quickly land in a quagmire of interrelated components. Given just how foundational they are!

Then there's all the locks: So many peripherals attempting to control the timing!

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@alcinnz Abstraction and separation is awesome. Right up till when it makes something impossible and then things just have to be messy and interdependent :)

If you wash and dry a load of laundry, you also have to be prepared to fold it, and put it away. It's not really helping otherwise.

LovesTha,
@LovesTha@floss.social avatar

@RickiTarr The folding part is the bit I enjoy.

And nearly everyone should be responsible for putting away their own laundry. One should only ever have themself to blame for being unable to find a piece of clothing in their own wardrobe. (Children graduate to putting away their clothes when they graduate to dressing themselves)

What is a moderate quality 20+20W amp. Anything that will connect to a generic PC is acceptable (aux, usb are the obvious options)

And by moderate quality I mean a noise floor low enough the average person isn't going to complain.

I don't fully understand all of the USB HID things, but I understand that the standard keyboard device has 6KRO limit, and this mode must be used for interacting with old BIOSes.

The NKRO version can be enabled on some keyboards, but isn't the default on many so they work from power on in the BIOS.

Is there a reason a keyboard doesn't use both? Register the first 6 keys on the simple one, but when a 7th key is pressed that goes through the NKRO?
