Not sure how a tyrant can write ‘do not oppress and do not be oppressed’ with a straight face but a lot of this reads like he cribbed it from accounts I’ve blocked in left Fediverse.

@TonyStark Oh, it's Zionists controlling the world again, from Iran to college students this time. Story at 5, 6, and 11.

But seriously, glad to see Ali explaining the motive behind it.

@TonyStark Maybe if he hadn't pushed for the death penalty for five innocent young Black men, I'd celebrate a little less. He brought every bit of this on himself with his hubris. Funny, if he'd had a little thicker skin when our first Black president made fun of him at a dinner, he wouldn't be a convicted felon today and would just be an old man with bad hair hosting season whatever of a dumb reality show.

It’s a pattern. Clinton balances the budget and hands it to Bush . Bush gets a second term because of 9/11 and then tanks the economy due to flimsy regulation on lending and Obama is left with the an economy in tatters. Obama fixes it.

Trump got off to good start because Obama teed it up for him.

What were you doing 4 years ago?? Besides fighting other shoppers for toilet paper as the unemployment rate soared to 14%?

Mad about the economy? Blame Donald Trump.

@TonyStark Four years ago? I remember waving to my parents when I dropped off their groceries and not being able to see family who lived across the state line. I did have niblings in my bubble and got to spend a lot of time with them, but my pleasure in that was surely not worth the school and socializing with their peers it set them back.

They should add footnotes, too. Like Babe Ruth’s entry should say “Never had to hit against Satchel Paige.”

This is a very good thing although 80 years too late.

If only white men were not so insecure about everything and have to create artificial barriers and rules to give themselves an advantage over people of color and others.

Another day, another climate action by the Biden administration, this time providing another $900 million from his signature infrastructure law for school districts to buy 3400 clean school buses, which not only reduces emissions but improves student health and positively impacts lower-income and non-white communities the most.

Nobody else running is as qualified or has a better platform.

What To Know About President Biden’s Clean School Bus Program:

MariaHill,

@TonyStark I hope the climate action people will take note and vote for Biden in November. Anything else is a vote to watch the world burn.

Also, one of my frustrations is how many kids are driven to school, by their own parent. Some of that is poorly-planned neighborhoods without sidewalks so even the closest kids can't walk, which also makes for long bus rides for kids who live further out. At least if you're going to drive your kid, carpool with other families for fewer idling cars.

I've seen funny sports fan gear, [Insert City] vs. Everybody. You can hate your team's rival, but in reality it's MAGA vs. Everybody. Even other Republicans.

Ohio's Republican governor, Mike DeWine, told Republicans to find a legislative fix to a late convention date and put Joe Biden on the November ballot. Previously, all states put both major party candidates on the ballot, including Ohio with Romney (2012) and Trump (2020).

The Biden campaign will sue if necessary.

Conspiracy theorists exist in many planes of expertise and essentially prey on vulnerable people.

Birth control medication has potential side effects, but so does anything else you take and the risks are extremely low comparatively.

The “too dangerous” idea is a myth. Birth control is safe. Birth control is a good thing.

@HankPym The article does mention this, but I'd like to emphasize that hormonal birth control treats medical conditions other than pregnancy. It can make a huge difference in quality of life. It's obvious that Republicans don't care about women's quality of life, but all of these politicians trying to come for hormonal contraception really worry me.

Why Louisiana is pushing to classify abortion pills as a controlled substance -

@Pepper The state senator trying to pass this law is inspired by his brother-in-law giving his sister the miso/mife combo without her consent. States already criminalize assault, and provide for extra penalties for assault on someone who is pregnant and miscarries. There's no need to criminalize possession of safe medications unless all you want to do is force women to stay pregnant or have severe hardship not to be. Drive across how many state lines to pick up a prescription.

We don't have a "reich" of any kind in this country, at least not yet. Trump's website mentioned it three times today before it was deleted 18 hours later, then blamed it on a staffer's cut and paste.

In a game of "I'm rubber, you're glue," a spokesperson instead called Biden the extremist and accused him of being the one hanging out with antisemites.

This Jewish person is voting for the one who doesn't "accidentally" post Nazi language (for so many reasons).

Trump doesn't know what he wants his contraceptive policy to be. Should states be able to restrict it? This morning he thought yes, just like states can now outlaw abortion. This afternoon he said he wasn't for banning it, and neither is the Republican party. Sure, and I'm not trusting them either.

Vote for Republicans and who knows what you'll get. and you'll get expanded health care, not restricted.

According to Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, religious freedom means being able to prevent other people's access to contraception, so he had to veto a bill that would have enshrined rights.

He also vetoed bills ending tax breaks for the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the issuance of new Confederate license plates.

This is what you get when you elect Republicans, no matter how affable or moderate they pretend to be before an election.

I was confused about this ruling yesterday so I was hoping a reputable source would explain it. Makes sense.

I couldn’t be more glad that Black voters actually have a chance at better representation because that’s what everyone deserves.

We still need to keep our eyes on the courts and vote wisely for Democrats. We don’t need any more Republican-appointed judges gutting the Voting Rights Act.

@TonyStark Any cases dealing with the VRA seem to be "heads they win, tails we lose" in the long term, even if Black people (who are overwhelmingly Democrats) will win a seat this year.

They want to protect three particular incumbents and make sure people the governor doesn't like also lose their seats, while trying to hew to the law. They're trying to do too many things.

Democrat David Trone adequately represents the only competitive House district in the state, but I’m glad his privately-funded campaign didn’t buy the Senate primary. Angela Alsobooks is the choice of Maryland Democrats.

Republican Larry Hogan may be anti-Trump, but he’ll vote however Mitch McConnell’s successor wants. Alsobrooks will be a reliable vote for Maryland’s interests. Plus the Senate needs Black women’s voices. Enough with Maryland’s all-male delegation.

Cartoon ghost

MariaHill,
@MariaHill@progressivecafe.social avatar

@MisterMoo I’m not willing to find out how anti-Trump Hogan is. As governor, he talked a good game as a moderate but was basically an obstruction to Democratic priorities. Which is why a lot of people vote for Republicans in blue states, under some misguided notion that government doing nothing is best, until say, expanded access to abortion is vetoed and you need one. Or take Maryland’s previous Republican governor, Bob Ehrlich, who vetoed same-sex couples visiting partners in the hospital.

It must be hard to be an airline, biting the hand that bails you out in bad times.

Look at how mad the airlines are that they've been told not to bait-and-switch.

No one told them they can't charge fees, only that they have to disclose those fees and the full cost of travel.

Let's hope the Fifth Circuit has a consumer-friendly moment for a change.

I saw a post yesterday questioning why the U.S. is investing in projects for electric vehicles but not investing in public transportation. That’s just false.

First, we aren’t getting rid of cars. We are too spread out and it’s doubtful that public transportation will be available in entirely where everyone, everywhere, at every time of day will need it. And we will always need vehicles for emergency services like ambulances and fire trucks and mail delivery and farms. 1/4

@TonyStark I have worked in several schools and tbh, Teacher Appreciation Week was nice because we got lunches provided by the PTA but didn't otherwise mean a whole lot. Teachers need a lot more. So thank you, Biden admin, if something substantive comes of this. Having Jill Biden, an educator, in the White House can only help. Teachers are quitting in droves. It's the lack of respect, though the pay is also low in many areas and compared to other professions requiring similar/lesser credentials.

The Alabama attorney general thinks that not only should his state be able to outlaw abortion completely, but that he should be able to restrict women from traveling elsewhere for their abortion care too. A federal judge said no, people have the right to cross state lines, and refused to dismiss the Yellowhammer Fund's lawsuit.

Some state officials will do anything to control people. Democrats nominate and confirm judges who won't let them.

The Atlantic has some of the best coverage on campus protests. The first link is by Jill Filipovic, criticizing other media for its misrepresentation. She notes that some media whitewashes pro-Hamas demands while conservative media ignores that some students are generally anti-war and not there because they are antisemitic. Some of the counter-protesters, especially the violent ones, have their own opportunist reasons rather than pro-Israel ones.

He believes Netanyahu “will go down as one of the worst leaders in the history of the Jewish people.” He grew up in Israel during the Second Intifada. Hearing cries of “intifada revolution” on campus concerns him. He recognizes it as protected speech, but worries about what violent rhetoric does for public discourse as well as for achieving peace. (He says it benefits the far-right in the USA and Israel.)

I'm sure they arranged seders that I didn't go to and stuff. It's a social and cultural group for Jewish students. Come on.
