A bit political. Not fond of nationalism in any form but extremely depressed with the current path of the UK therefore open to options. Very pro-EU. UK and Irish citizen, living in Scotland since 2000. Knows a bit about energy, both renewables and fossil fuel. Does Human Factors for a living. Will toot on radio and trash television programmes.

Yesterday I used some foul-mouthed terms to describe the Conservative Government and their far-right rebels holding out for these so called Rwanda flights. Make no mistake: refugees, the small boats are mere tools to what the real aim is. Namely, to put ministers above the law.

MartinVeart,
@MartinVeart@mastodon.scot avatar

@RejoinEU with all my heart, I hope you are correct. But I am sure many wrote off Hitler and the NSDAP in similar terms.

MartinVeart,
@MartinVeart@mastodon.scot avatar

@RejoinEU it is more in my view. It will set the precedent that a government can pass a law that states a minister’s decision is above the courts, above the rule of law. Once this is passed about refugees, it can be passed again for anything, over anyone.

Rwanda Bill. A shower of bastards supporting it. A shower of cunts opposing it for being too weak.

@patrickhadfield of course the are aliens. I’ve watched Men in Black. Humans invent superglue? Of course not. That was shipped in like Velcro.

Lovely read as I'm about to board a Boeing 737-800...

Title: Boeing supplier was warned of parts "defects," lawsuit claims

@hankg 737-800 is fine. It’s the Max that deserves the bad reputation. Relax 🙂

MartinVeart,
@MartinVeart@mastodon.scot avatar

@hankg The Max issue goes back to 2012 (by memory) when Boeing needed to compete with the Airbus A320. I’m sure you know the engine history so you are right; it is a commercial issue that forced a bad engineering solution. At least the 800 engines does not change the handling profile of the entire aircraft!

All governments but especially the UK Government should remember that universal human rights lie at the heart of a civilised society. If we cannot care for the stranger, we will not care for one another.

Post-Brexit and under Conservative rule though, it is fair comment.

BBC Radio4 News at 13:00. “Protesters have been involved in scuffles with police at The Cenotaph ahead of pro-Palestinian march this afternoon.”
What does that make you think? Bloody Palestinian supporters making trouble? Not counter-protestors though, not the far right Nazi troublemakers chanting “England ‘til I die.” No, that came later in the bulletin, without mention of far right or Nazis.

@fulelo I have long considered Boris Johnson to be a psychopath but to hear news of his callous approach to the elderly ahead of the Covid19 pandemic is truly shocking. There is no one who should vote Tory ever again.

The callousness with which people advocate for the murder of innocents as a necessary evil is shocking and incredibly depressing

MartinVeart,

@Rhodium103 @zleap @drskyskull I am sure anyone who has read Chomsky would agree. The economic cycle of the Middle East is bomb and rebuild. Bomb and rebuild. Money made by both sides. Hatred is passed on from generation to generation. Wars need dark emotions.

MartinVeart,
@MartinVeart@mastodon.scot avatar

@zleap @sellathechemist @Rhodium103 @drskyskull I haven’t read Chomsky’s modern writing but have witnessed with my own eyes the type of support the West gives Israel, as reported by both Chomsky and John Pilger.

Solo travel is on the rise as travellers seek greater freedom and independence.

Taking a trip alone comes with challenges and risks, however, and choosing the right destination is key.

Hungarian airline Wizz Air has put together a ranking of the top European cities for solo travellers in 2023.

They analysed reviews from solo travellers on TripAdvisor to determine which destinations afforded lone tourists the most positive experiences.

@TheEuropeanNetwork I remember in 2017 turning up for my return flight on Wizz Air and being charged £140 because the family did not have paper boarding passes. I will not willingly fly with them again. Ever.

Norway long has a solution to this issue. They tax a vehicle on engine size, power output and kerb weight. A small-engined, low powered light car attracts little tax. A massive SUV is taxed to hell. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/oct/16/suvs-emit-more-climate-damaging-gas-than-older-cars-do-study-finds

Spinner Dolphins At Electric Beach, Oahu, photography. Snorkeling among the abundant tropical fish found in the warm water at Electric beach, my friends and I were treated to a visit by a pod of Spinner dolphins. They stayed with us for almost an hour, chattering loudly underwater to one another and putting on a show worthy of admission.
