Around here, if a trans woman were to show her boobs in public, she could be arrested for showing girl boobs, and then sent to boy jail because of it.

I'm going to ramble a bit, but it will hopefully come around to something. When I was growing up, I read a lot of older historical book series, a big one would be the Little House On The Prairie series. While I really enjoyed it, there are some very obviously negative portrayals of Native Americans and African Americans. I remember being angry about it as a kid, and my Dad telling me, that part of learning about history is that we have to acknowledge the people we were, and still are. But because Little House on the Prairie is only semi-autobiographical, I still have mixed feelings about this. I do think they are well written books by a female author, an interesting perspective on early American life, and as an adult I can see and acknowledge the issues with the text. If we try to get rid of every author with racist ideas there wouldn't be much left to read from the 20th Century, and it also feels like being dishonest about who we are. So, I'm very mixed, how do you all feel about it? Do you think children can handle books with racial issues like this if it's explained to them? What is our responsibility here?

MegaMichelle,
@MegaMichelle@a2mi.social avatar

@RickiTarr

I think we might do better to read literature by Black and indigenous people which discusses racism. That would also get a good discussion about racism going, and provide perspectives it would be hard to provide by just reading stuff from the racists' perspective.

There oughta be an audio book app where you can describe the last thing you remember happening in the book and it'll take you to the place where you fell asleep.

Trying to understand human psychology a bit here, boosts for reach are very much appreciated.

When you post an image without alt text, and someone replies with the image description for you to use, what is your typical reaction?

MegaMichelle,
@MegaMichelle@a2mi.social avatar

@stefan

There is one situation where I have not posted alt text: When I'm live-tooting a city council meeting and post a screenshot of a presentation slide or something. I apologize, in the main text, that I don't have time to alt-text it because I'm trying to keep up with the meeting. I link to the source of the presentation.

If someone replied with alt text, I would thank them, retoot it, and edit the post to add it after the meeeting.

I think people need to be more judicious with their use of the word "attack". I'm looking at you, headline writers!

All the time, I see headlines like "So and so attacks so and so" and I'm like "Holy shit, what happened?" and it turns out that what they meant was "So and so says harsh words about so and so" and I'm like 🙄 .

Curious if there's a correlation here...

Do you self-identify as (even if not officially diagnosed) or neurotypical?

Do you enjoy the effects of (regardless of how often you use them) any psychoactive substances, including but not limited to alcohol?

I'm specifically asking about the recreational psychoactive aspect so drinking solely for the flavor or taking prescribed stimulants for medical purposes doesn't count, while drinking because you enjoy how it makes you feel does.

For the purposes of this poll, caffeine used solely as a stimulant to help with wakefulness doesn't count (but if you drink coffee because it makes you feel good in some other way, it does).

(will follow up with my hypothesis once results are in, I don't want to say which direction I think the correlation goes to avoid skewing results)

Step 3: Place a kiss on your partner's forehead.

CM Eyer reads us some stats about bias in hiring.

Also, I know a lady who was getting no calls when applying for jobs as an IT manager. Then, just out of curiosity, she sent out some resumes with her deadname, which was a male name, and got tons of calls back.

MegaMichelle,
@MegaMichelle@a2mi.social avatar

CM Akmon says that she was someplace where they implemented anonymous hiring and it dramatically improved the diversity of hiring pool and of the people actually hired.

And, it's passed!

DS-1 General Obligation Capital Improvement Bonds to Fund 121 Catherine Affordable Housing Project

MegaMichelle,

Staff is here to talk about it. Jen Hall, director of the Ann Arbor Housing Commission.

Q: If we take out bonds, does that affect our ability to build more housing in the future?
A: Yeah: Positively. It takes a jillion years to get subsidized housing online. If you do them serially, you'll never get 'em done. Bond financing lets us proceed with multiple at the same time.

Also, using bonds lets the financing be way better interest rates than private loans.

MegaMichelle,
@MegaMichelle@a2mi.social avatar

CM Song says that bond financing will make 121 E Catherine happen in a year instead of 10 years. It's awesome.

MegaMichelle,
@MegaMichelle@a2mi.social avatar

CM Disch asks more specific questions about the bond.

$7.2m is the total amount of money from the millage. Some of that is for overhead. In order to get 121 E Catherine done this fast, she'd have to use all of the millage money from this year and next year, and other projects would suffer.
