Does anyone in know of any good resources / reviews / analysis on the influences of consulting firms on university finance and governance? The more I look, the more it seems like the trend of universities running like businesses is being pushed through a coordinated effort. @academicchatter @academicsunite

MolnarSteven,

@djvanness @academicchatter @academicsunite Related (maybe): I have wondered about the high salaries of academic administrators marching up with the increasingly absurd salaries of business executives. Are these things directly related?

MolnarSteven,

@StillIRise1963 No one has ever reached the CVS pharmacy by phone. Many have tried, but none have succeeded.

β€œFamily Dollar is recalling hundreds of products, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and toothpaste sold at the discount retailer's outlets in 23 states, that had been stored improperly.

The recalled items "were stored outside of labeled temperature requirements" before being "inadvertently shipped”

MolnarSteven,

@GottaLaff On the one hand, they seem a bit careless, but, on the other hand, if these are all self-reported, then it's a good sign, since a less scrupulous company could probably get away with it.

MolnarSteven,

@GottaLaff My point is that it would be difficult for anyone to know they were stored improperly.

Born 106 years ago today, Thelonious Monk fundamentally shaped jazz with his unique piano techniques and innovative compositions. During the bebop era, Monk's distinct style, marked by dissonance, intricate rhythms, and unconventional timing, pushed the boundaries of traditional jazz. He was one of a kind.

@Teri_Kanefield Remember when a reporter would go out on the streets on Independence Day and ask people to sign a petition that was either the Declaration of Independence or the Bill of Rights? The reporters would typically be accused of being communists. They don't do that any more, do they? Hmmm, I wonder why.

Donald Trump is openly calling for extrajudicial killing. This is blatantly violating the terms of his release. Jail him pending his trials. Now.

    MolnarSteven,

@DrJackBrown I'm not sure which release you mean - state of Georgia or federal - but I'm not seeing it. Could you be specific about the term he is violating? Being a fascist is not on the list.

    MolnarSteven,

@kentindell @DrJackBrown Ah, I think there are two separate things here. Trump calling for shoplifters to be shot, which I think was the reference, is actually OK, but the Milley thing (not extrajudicial) is not. Under his release terms, of course. Nothing Trump ever says is OK in reality.

Wow! I just learned that Isaac Newton wrote a treatise about music theory, comparing just intonation with equal tempered scales!

This was in 1665, when he was 22: the year he fled Trinity College to avoid the Great Plague, went to the countryside, invented calculus, and discovered that a prism can recombine colors of light to make white light.

Check out this great new video - it explains everything very simply.

Newton's work is amazing because while an equal tempered scale - one with notes equally spaced - is standard now, it was very unusual in Newton's time. Much more common was just intonation, where the frequency ratios are simple fractions.

Another reason Newton's work is amazing: he compared just intonation not only to a 12-tone equal tempered scale, but also to equal tempered scales with 15, 19, 20, 24, 25, 29, 36, 41, 51, 53, 59, 100, 120 and 612 tones! He discovered that the 12, 53, 120 and 612 tone scales work especially well.

The 53-note equal tempered scale actually goes back to the Chinese music theorist Jing Fang (78–37 BC), who discovered that 53 just fifths is very nearly equal to 31 octaves:

    (3/2)⁡³ / 2Β³ΒΉ β‰ˆ 1.00209031404...

Much later the same observation was made by Nicholas Mercator. No, not the guy with the map, another Mercator: the one who invented natural logarithms.

I don't know if Newton could have known of Mercator's work - but he was influenced by Descartes's Compendium Musicae.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83ytb6AWRAk

    MolnarSteven,

@johncarlosbaez He was an infant in 1643. Even Newton was not that precocious.

So this is kinda wild...I had a appt today at and waited in line about 30 minutes. They called me to the register and asked me what my insurance was. I told them, and they said that they aren't contracted with my insurance. I was disappointed because I didn't know that beforehand (my fault), but what blew my mind is that they refused to let me pay cash. A woman near me offered to pay with her card, and they said nope. There's no way to self-pay, which seems dumb πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

    MolnarSteven,

@_ohcoco_ I have used Walgreens a couple of times, and have found them to be more difficult to deal with and more inefficient than CVS, which is not an easy accomplishment.

    MolnarSteven,

@RickiTarr In keeping with my (somewhat) obscure violin theme: Jascha Heifetz. When young, I only heard his amazing technique; when I got a little older, I heard what a terrible musician (and person) he was. Virgil Thomson described his playing as "silk underwear music".
