Up in the nosebleed with kids (partners enjoying quiet time at home). Opening act Mirador is pretty good.

Oof! Break now before Greta Van Fleet are on.
Looking forward to it. So far, especially with opener act 2, realizing I'm getting old, would much prefer smaller venue. And less 'noise'

Lol I guess I'm - this morning I was listening to Rosemary Clooney cooking chicken liver curry* - years old

They were ok - a bit sharp their sound, missing some mid range depth

"Surprisingly, our results show that women's contributions tend to be accepted more often than men's. However, when a woman's gender is identifiable, they are rejected more often. Our results suggest that although women on GitHub may be more competent overall, bias against them exists nonetheless."

Oh another fixture gone!
Lost phi bar a few years ago (turned into a Chipotle โ˜น๏ธ) at Craig & Forbes in

Now next door Orient Express is slated to close. (But ps notes a new restaurant will rise in Fall)

Sheet of paper posted on the glass. Text reads: A bittersweet announcement: After 19 years of business, Orient Express will be closing its doors for the last time. We are very proud to have served CMU and the greater Pittsburgh community our best Cantonese recipes since 2005. Our patronage spanned folks of all walks of life and cultural backgrounds, and it was our sincere pleasure to meet you all, learn your favorite flavors, and serve you our staple dishes. While the operations of Orient Express were often grueling, our wonderful customers gave us reason to work tirelessly. The owning family members are all moving onto different chapters. May, the matriarch is (finally!) retiring after 40+ years in the restaurant biz. Shirley is in the process of interviewing for industrial design related positions, but in the meantime, can be found enjoying her funemployment. Stanley, who transitioned from Front-of-House Manager to Head Chef, is taking an overdue staycation after the long hours manning the wok. Following a few weeks of well-deserved rest, he will be searching for new employment opportunities, so please reach out if you think he'd be a good fit. If you need to get in contact with us, please find Stanley at stan@oeonforbes.com We wish everyone the best. Good luck and be kind. Orient Express P.S. Keep an eye out for a new restaurant opening this Fall! P.P.S. Martin, if you see this, we can refund you your remaining gift card balance!! Email us!

Had a couple of really nice people over for dinner. Hadn't seen, met them for year+ maybe 2 and they're leaving for new (and most terrific) positions next week. Both former grad students, now finished postdocs and the most wildly accomplished/published kids. Kerala-esque sour fish curry (meen moilee) and Bengali style alu among other things. And they got for us Brazilian laddoos (ok brigadeiros; I โค๏ธ condensed milk but wow these were sweet, ok I ate 3)

Small round Brazilian laddoos - brigadeiros - small balls in small paper liners, some white with coconut flakes and others chocolate & covered with 100s&1000s (round sprinkles)

Idea:

Bookstores should group fantasy with horror instead of scifi. Both fantasy and horror are purely creations of the author's mind; scifi is tethered to factual information.

If you need to group scifi, I'd put it with mysteries and thrillers.

This was 25+ yrs ago now but I'll not forget it. Visiting a friend in grad school at Duke and we walk into a (mostly used) bookstore in Durham, NC. I was looking rebuild by my SF collection so I go straight to the SF section and there I find: Charles Darwin's Origin of the Species.

I love that I can casually make chawanmushi in the instant pot like itโ€™s NBD (really easy once youโ€™ve done it a few times). Itโ€™s one of my favorite things to eat and I hate paying so much money for them at Japanese restaurants

SRDas,
@SRDas@mastodon.online avatar

@skinnylatte can make a (large) single serve one in the microwave in fastest way (Without raw chicken/meat to start). I haven't checked timings for different amounts but that can be easily done (don't have to do that optimization for instant pot).

They've changed some of the routes, so I ended up on the wrong bus and got off downtown at not my usual spot and had to walk a bit to get to the train station. So here you too can enjoy some nice downtown (or dahntahn as they say in) buildings in this lovely blue sky weather

Tonight's is a great cocktail from the prohibition era:

30ml light Cuban rum
30ml cognac
30ml triple sec
10ml lemon juice
A scant barspoon of simple sirup
3 drops of saline solution

Shake&Strain in a chilled coupe and garnish with a lemon twist.

I love brandy cocktails, and I love rum, so this one is one of the best I've ever made myself.

LA food diary.

Some of you know Iโ€™m a big fan of LA food. I think that dollar for dollar you get a tremendous amount of cuisines, varieties of foods, in this melting pot which feels to me like it has far more immigrant and working class food than the Bay Area. Even the density and quality of โ€˜fancy foodโ€™ is high!

Iโ€™m keeping a record of my LA 2024 discoveries.

@skinnylatte regardless of what's on the menu - I always ask Thai places if they have som tam poo (with the raw/salted crab). If they have it great! If not I hope it gets them to think it would sell...
(I daresay I've gotten really good and spicy papaya salads even without the crab, I like to think it's perhaps because I ventured to ask about the crab)

SRDas,
@SRDas@mastodon.online avatar

@skinnylatte oh among the most amazing Thai meals I had was in LA. Took a friend I was staying with to Jitlada (a while back, not sure if it's still around). They had a sour fish curry - I think with fermented fish guts. Super spicy - was well beyond our tolerances. We couldn't stop eating. My friend still curses me lovingly
