After resigning from the TDF board of directors (for @libreoffice ) over the weekend, I am hoping to again spend some zen time on legacy code and maybe even write some articles again about that.

I am, once again, wondering why tricycles, in the sense of full grown adult sized cycles with two rear wheels (with or without cargo) are not normalised.

They somehow feel like they shouldn't need as much engineering as it's pushed on to build cargo bikes, and they would be something I wouldn't mind using myself, rather than risk my life due to being barely able to balance a bike.

Sweetshark,
@Sweetshark@chaos.social avatar

@flameeyes With two wheels, you can go slow -- with three wheels you have to (because you cannot lean into a curve). Plus three wheelers need more space.

Sweetshark,
@Sweetshark@chaos.social avatar

@flameeyes yeah, so in Germany there are quite a few options, see e.g. https://dreirad-zentrum.de/dreiraeder-elektro-dreiraeder/

... but it is still less than cargo bicycles (for the reasons I named above).

Sweetshark,
@Sweetshark@chaos.social avatar

@flameeyes If you want to go more "car-like", there are also options like the Carver:

4 new blog posts in April. Seems I'm getting better at sharing my long(er) form thoughts :)

The workflow I now have makes it really easy too. When I have a thread here that I think deserves a blog post, I copy the link to the first toot and paste it in https://mtr.wildeboer.net where I can get a dump that I can copy/paste in my editor and work on. My blog is based and also uses Markdown, so it is easy to do :)

@jwildeboer Hmm, so your whole blog content is MIT licensed?

Sweetshark,
@Sweetshark@chaos.social avatar

@jwildeboer Hmm, yeah that is why I stayed with github pages for now. Im fine with those licenses for code, but less so for text and esp. media, where I sometimes prefer e.g. CC-NC licenses.

Sweetshark,
@Sweetshark@chaos.social avatar

@jwildeboer oh! My concern is not so much about derived content, but that codeberg is "open source only", which excludes e.g. CC-NC even if its just for some select parts of the repo.

Sweetshark,
@Sweetshark@chaos.social avatar

@jwildeboer Last time I asked, they did not say 'a bit of CC-NC is fine' ... which doenst mean it might (currently) be tolerated.

As long as that is true, I wont go through the hassle to move there exclusively. I should look into cohosting though, so that moving is easier should a untolerable of github pages happen.

If you are a maintainer or contributor for a small-to-one person open source project- from options below, what is your current most pressing need (if any one of them apply specifically to you)?

I'm just trying to get a snapshot as there are a lot of ideas going around. I would like this to remain as anonymous it can possibly be here so don't feel like you need to write a comment.

I already know this is not a professional study

I only have four choices to use, so I know it's incomplete.

@chillicampari Would professional security reviews by external tean e.g. once a year be "project support"?

Looks like the big foundations have got tired of being blocked by the massif amd the @EU_Commission over standards and are organising their own initiative.

Sweetshark,
@Sweetshark@chaos.social avatar

@webmink @EU_Commission That sounds close to what https://slsa.dev aims for, but with specific focus on EU/CRA?

Sweetshark,
@Sweetshark@chaos.social avatar

@luis_in_brief @webmink One thing well done about SLSA is that is has levels, and the lower ones are reasonably easy to archive. Thus it easier to convince TPTB to invest "just a little" to start moving in the right direction.

Recommend to consider something similar.

Apologies to the person in the F150 on the 401 earlier today, she thought I was flipping her the bird but it was directed at the anti-carbon-tax chuds on the overpass above us!!! 😳😓

Sweetshark,
@Sweetshark@chaos.social avatar

@leigh Given she was riding a F150, wouldnt a shotgun approach to birdflipping be entirely justified?

Sweetshark,
@Sweetshark@chaos.social avatar

@leigh @tess Yeah, there is a lot of "everyone is fighting a battle you dont know about" in this. Here (European metropolis), I already feel bad for using a 90 mpg petrol bike instead of a 2.4 kWh per 100km electric bike once in a while ...

Its also kinda enlightening on how distros react to the backdoor:

  • "lets rerelease the version from the untrusted party, we run autogen.sh ourselves now"
  • "lets roll back to the last version not having any changes by the untrusted party and rebuild our infra from scratch"

I know which of these I trust more as an upstream ...

Sweetshark,
@Sweetshark@chaos.social avatar

both masked the 5.6 release and additionally removed it from the repo, even though the backdoor as known so far would not get injected when running your own autofoo and also just targeted dpkg/rpm. Good.

jwildeboer, to random
@jwildeboer@social.wildeboer.net avatar

The backdoor was found before it could cause wide-spread damage.

That is a FACT.

"We were extremely lucky." "This could have gone very, very bad!" "This was a big operation by state actors!"

That is SPECULATION.

Mix the two and you get wonderful clickbait. Sticking to the facts doesn't give you that dopamine rush.

Well, I get my kicks out of facts and understanding the core of the issue. But I am a bit of a weirdo, I guess :) Back to my little break. CU tomorrow!

    @jwildeboer Well, two tidbits from there: the call in was explicitly mentioned in the call. Also the leaked recording starts already before that participant joined.

    @jwildeboer Hm, given the transient nature of mastodon, I'd say one or two retoots of a single toot are fine -- esp. if they happen at a different time of day and might reach an entirely different audience (e.g. US vs Europe).
