#Optimist #builder #instigator #entrepreneur #writer #father #NewYorker

I've contributed a few things, instigated others, and still believe in the positive potential of technology. If the internet is broken, I probably had a hand in it (mea culpa). I still believe we can fix it.

Believer in the good in people, in the power of communal action, in personal responsibility, and in reaching out to the other side to find common grounds.

I was on @mike's Dot Social podcast to talk about Mastodon, (not the 1984 movie), and the social web. If you've got questions about any of those things, maybe we've covered them!

@Gargron @mike great Job from both of you on this. One of the questions not posed but useful would be advice on how we, users, can help further evangelize the social web to the masses. Is there any particular way we can help?

As far as I'm concerned, the best explaination of came from @cwebber :

"ChatGPT is Mansplaining as a Service"

https://octodon.social/@cwebber/109462369670144568

The more I think about the statement, the more it strikes me as correct for most LLMs: confidently asserting truthiness on every topic without having any expertise in any.

This is important: if doesn't fix its CSAM problem, it will hurt the whole enterprise's reputation and set all of this back for years:

Over 400 cities; almost 150km of highways: The Mayans were clearly a very organized society:

The fall of the Mayan empire has a lot to tell us about what we should be careful about. For them, it started with moving the pendulum from science towards religion to maintain power. Much to be learned from that.

Here's an idea: since it takes $36k to add a parking spot in New York, any new parking spot should generate $12k of revenue per year. If a given parking area (defined as 4 adjacent parking spaces) fails that for 3 years in a row, the space should be turned into a human usable space (park, sidewalk, etc...)

If current military forces in Rostov give up and join , what will the impact on the Ukraine offensive be? Does it lower the resistance from on Ukrainian ground?
I've heard Rostov was where planning was happening. Does this impair the Russian effort?

Remembering the victims of the January 6 insurrection: American democracy; the belief that presidential transitions were smooth; the sense that both parties believed in the rule of law; the people who died and got hurt protecting the idea of America.

Went to check out out of curiosity: it looks like Twitter and made me realize how much better is: edit button, content filters, hashtags, content warnings... there's just so much more functionality in this open world.

So here's a crazy idea: require that ANY write-off by a corporation be forced to create a clear public benefit. For example, a tax write off on creative work (like what WBD is doing with movies) would require that the work be released in the public domain; a tax write-off on research would require that patent rights on said research expire; a tax write-off on assets would require a drop on the price of said assets to the public.

If you are comfortable with YOU being a pronoun for both singular and plural counts, then you have no reason not to be OK with THEY being a pronoun for singular and plural presentation of a person.

Well, I've tried #Threads today and what I can say is that it makes me even happier to be on #Mastodon. With every subsequent new service ( #Bluesky too), it becomes clearer that the #Fediverse is where my tribe is.

You may all be weird but you're my kind of weird.
