If banks were robbed with the frequency that data is stolen from "tech" companies, no one would trust banks with their money.

Man, I used to love the Raspberry Pi, until you couldn't get them anymore.

Now, I don't see the value in buying a starter kit with 8G RAM for $169, when a Mini PC with an Intel 4 core processor, 16GB RAM, an M.2 AND a 2.5in. SSD drive bay is the same $169, works with the full sized HDMI cables I already have, and isn't much bigger in size.

People keep telling me Pis still have a purpose, but it's clearly not with home lab and project tinkerers.

And this makes me sad.

  2. Bonus: Why was I there?

@AAKL @Forbes Never underestimate the ability of a tech company to act inept when they really don't want to do something.

Want turn by turn directions from LA to Chicago? No problem, press one button and ask.

Want app store choices, or the ability to stop being tracked, and all of a sudden they turn into MC Etcher who can only implement it via a system of Rube Goldberg machines.

And we keep letting them get away with acting stupid, which buys them more time to change nothing.

    Trustnowan,
    @Trustnowan@fosstodon.org avatar

@AAKL @Forbes True. Unfortunately it was a Trojan horse the entire time that they unleashed with no ability to secure or control it.

...and they're completely unrepentant about it.

    Trustnowan,
    @Trustnowan@fosstodon.org avatar

@AAKL @Forbes And ignorance. They KNEW we (and regulators) didn't understand what they were doing in the background, and they did everything they could to obfuscate it and even lie about it.

If the public knew up front they would have thought it was icky.

So now, because they got away with it, everyone and their mother thinks they have a RIGHT to install scripts and send themselves your data.

Seeing a trend of more & more websites not letting you even into the website at all until you sign in or give an email address.

Walmart(dot)ca did it to me yesterday until I tried a private browsing tab. And Wayfair today.

Is this the new tactic since browsers are getting more privacy focused?

Never thought I'd see paywalls just to shop!

Guess I'm going to be submitting more no@eff-off.com emails going forward. 😡

When I ran my business for 12 years, I had one main rule, "Make it easy for people to do business with you".

Of course, my business wasn't data collection first, everything else is secondary.

The idea of making me jump through hoops to give you money is insulting.

I think so. It already feels like technology has moved faster than anyone has ever been able to control it.
I mean does anyone believe that Meta is actually in control of Facebook, or are they simply monetizing a run away train for as long as they can before it's done destroying things?

Four years ago today, the CDC advised all Americans to wear masks in public to avoid spreading covid.

Trump immediately announced he would refuse to wear one, needlessly turning masking into a divisive partisan issue and contributing to countless avoidable deaths.

@rbreich I'll never forget Herman Cain proudly announcing on social media that the Trump rally he was attending was a "No mask event"...and then promptly dying of COVID.

"Cain, 74, learned of his diagnosis on June 29, nine days after attending a Trump rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he and many others crowded together without wearing face masks aimed at preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus." - https://news.yahoo.com/herman-cain-former-republican-presidential-145125237.html

The terrible human toll in Gaza has many causes.
A chilling investigation by +972 highlights efficiency:

    1. An engineer: “When a 3-year-old girl is killed in a home in Gaza, it’s because someone in the army decided it wasn’t a big deal for her to be killed.”

    2. An AI outputs "100 targets a day". Like a factory with murder delivery:

"According to the investigation, another reason for the large number of targets, and the extensive harm to civilian life in Gaza, is the widespread use of a system called “Habsora” (“The Gospel”), which is largely built on artificial intelligence and can “generate” targets almost automatically at a rate that far exceeds what was previously possible. This AI system, as described by a former intelligence officer, essentially facilitates a “mass assassination factory.”"

    1. "The third is “power targets,” which includes high-rises and residential towers in the heart of cities, and public buildings such as universities, banks, and government offices."

"Additional automated systems, including one called “Where’s Daddy?” also revealed here for the first time, were used specifically to track the targeted individuals and carry out bombings when they had entered their family’s residences."

That's some dark, brutal, distopian sh*t.
