@ethanOS @JungleGeorge It's a giant toybox for my tweaking soul. Tab stacks are brilliant, inbuilt mouse gestures, inbuilt language translation, the themeing is great, I use it for my.email and calendar...but mostly its that there are so many options I can tweak to suit me and how I work instead of having to find extensions tjat do the same.

Plus, I was a user of the old Opera since version 8 (New Opera has no soul) and I've come to respect the CEO and devs as people who care very.much about enabling people to be their best selves online, and even foster communities. They even now run a mastodon server.

Personally, that's a killer feature for me.

I haven't used in quite a while. Version 113 just released and there's a few nice features, one of which is some nice picture-in-picture improvements, so I'll give it a go for a bit and see how it goes 🔥🦊

On the main though I'm well under that. But it is very liberating to know its there if I do need the space and I dont have to write a massive thread of smaller boxes.

In light of the really impressive JWST observations of Fomalhaut that were released yesterday, I wanted to share my view of the Fomalhaut system. Story time!

Fomalhaut is a bright nearby star that has been known for decades to have a debris disk, a belt of dust caused by asteroids crashing into each other. Sounds very dramatic, but we see them all over the place! Our own Kuiper Belt and asteroid belt are extremely faint/low mass versions of debris disks we observe around other stars.

@JungleGeorge @Natasha_Jay @apps If you are stuck in your ways then I am too. I keep finding Fedilab lets me down in small but hard to quantify ways, despite the many brilliant improvements and QoL tweaks it brings to the mastodon experience. Currently using Moshidon for my Masto account.

I disagree with the current CEO of Mastodon about his stance on mid-sized instances. We don't want to be run in isolation, we are part of the Fediverse. "Normal users just want the default", he can repeat that as many times as he wants, it doesn't make it true because of that.

Diversity is the DNA of the Fediverse and Mastodon is just one part of the whole. Thousands of people spend their time and money to make it successful. Anyone who dismisses that and single-handedly tries to market the Fediverse as a Mastodon brand and use "crowding out" techniques to prevent users from even being encouraged to choose an instance from a diversity will ultimately fail.

I am super disappointed with the direction Mastodon Corporation is taking. If there is not enough headwind here soon, then sooner or later it will lead to a schism.

I can't help but see his comments as if Linus Torvalds were to decide that "People like and expect the Microsoft model so let's do things their way". It's like he's abandoning the core precepts and many strengths of the Fediverse for the sake of user expectation.

It must have been hard to watch thousands bounce off of the "which server do I pick?" issue and go back to Twitter but the solution to that isn't pretending to be one of the centralised platforms at the expense of the rest of the Fediverse.
