@bourgwick My own story with Fred Frith was about three years ago, when he was asking about a tape from a live gig by his Skeleton Crew band. I happened to have a decent flac copy of that (thank you, taper culture, thank you, etree and dime), so I sent it to him.
To my surprrise, it eventually came out on a double-CD compilation of live dates spanning Skeleton Crew's career:
It presents a series of sound works and recordings in which sound artists work with the listening act in existential finitude situations.
The artists were asked to create a sound work that can be heard by a person in existential finitude (in a relatively short period of time) or a sound work to be heard while someone dies or a sound work that the artists themselves would like to listen to while they die.
I hope at some point in this conf we can also discuss the question - how to incentivise devs to share their code publicly always and by default (regardless if it's "perfect" or spaghetti - it's a spectrum anyway, right?). Basically if a project gets public funding and uses funding to write code, even if just in pilot / Proof-of-Concept stage, code should be online from day 1. But as most tricky questions, I guess the problem is social not technical, right? #CoRDI2023
@lozross This is a great idea, but the implementation would be complex. It would require a code forge (Github Premium? Github Academia?) that only provides short descriptions of the code base and doesn't allow cloning for less than $50-$80. And only provides FLOSS licensed code if the developer pays over $500 in "Open Access Fees".
Oh, and if some clever developer cracks the system and provides free and open access to the code, the forge has to go after them and harass them legally until driving them to suicide, the way academics did with Aaron Schwarz.
I.e., it would need to be something that puts open source code distribution on equal standing to academic publishing.
And something tells me that maybe information technology workers might not see this as a good deal.
Glad the boosters are approved & rolling out soon. Tho for myself really hoping for Novavax approval soon. I had such an awful reaction to my last mRNA vax that I hope to not have to tolerate another.
(no need to @ me about the science, I am following it closely, thx)
Back in 2014, over at the @mediateletipos blog, I wrote about the famous recording of the internal radio communications of Pinochet's troops during the 1973 Coup in Chile - also known as "la interferencia secreta", this recording was leaked and widely distributed by the Alerce label.
Today, on @mediateletipos, I write about a different field recording from this dramatic day in Santiago.
In an act of "citizen phonography" Doctor Puente Martínez used a reel-to-reel tape recorder and set it up on his window sill, capturing a recording of both the combat in the streets during the assault on La Moneda palace, and the domestic soundscape of his own flat.
In this interview, conducted between Argentina (Franco Falistoco), Chile (Gerardo Figueroa Rodríguez) and Spain (muggins here) we touched on some aspects of my sound practice.
One was the impact of teaching and facilitating and how they feed back into more standard sound art practice. Another one was my concern for the role of the body in listening, and the presence of the listening body in the soundscape, as well as a discussion of (collective) sound memory, and the archival strategies that can be deployed in order to support it.
Oh, and, inevitably, we touch upon radio-activism, which is where all three of us come from.
🚨 FRIDAY QUIZ TIME 🚨
I have just provisioned a new dedicated #Linux server. It's been deployed running #Ubuntu 22.04.3. I SSH'ed in as root, given the provided credentials. 🤓
QUESTION: What's the very first command I typed after logging in? 🤔
👨🏫 ONLY A FEW DAYS LEFT TO APPLY AS A SPEAKER 👩🏫
If you want to present your work from the field of digital sovereignty at the upcoming DISCO Slovenia conference, you only have until 1 September to apply!
So why is #fosstodon English-only? Simple: the admins only speak one language. So other languages are "a problem".
FFS, get off that instance, it's fediblock-fodder. Fascist instances should be defederated.
Exchange between @mairin and the admin, @kev: "@kev@victorvicpal This is an issue of humannes. A person's language is a core piece of their identity. @mairin so. Leave. Then. FFS. @vistorvicpal"
