One of the less obvious effects of the #fediverse and #selfhosted tech is more awareness of server hardware being "Real".

Yesterday a cyclone took down the power grid this instance runs off. My previous instance was run by a couple of Russians, and I managed to swap a few messages via XMPP at the start of the war. Some playing cards I bought recently shipped from Lviv in Ukraine.

The internet still amazes me with its ability to bring us together across borders. Don't take it for granted.
