An overly thorough, emotional rollercoastery, exceedingly “Andy”, and genuinely amazing insiders view from one of the co-chairs of RailsConf 2024 in Detroit a few weeks ago.

The first paragraph I don’t care for whatsoever, but the rest is very good.

Thanks Andy, you’re a gem ❤️.

Also I want to highlight for conference organizers something which is Very Important:

Andy not just mentioned the code of conduct on stage in his opening, but went over it in detail and why it was important, especially if you don’t think it affects you. It was maybe 5 minutes on stage.

After, I was near Andy (a lot) and I saw it happen repeatedly: marginalized people came up to him and personally thanked him for saying something. It was 💔.

This is what DEI looks like and why it matters.

Ridwell (https://www.ridwell.com) is on the side of some boxes in my neighborhood porches. It's apparently a service which accepts hard-to-recycle items like plastic films.

But why do we have this for-profit business instead of pushing #oakland to improve it's existing recycling program? Or legislate a reduction in single-use plastics? #SFBA

Congratulations to our cousins on a (by all accounts) successful ! 👏🏽.

Community work is complex, difficult, and so very vital to everything we do technically. PSF shows us how it can be done well in so many ways.

I’m on an extremely clean, affordable, fast, and timely monorail train to the airport in Naha, Okinawa. It even has these gated walls to prevent injury.

Sometimes when I see what is possible elsewhere, I can’t believe the state of US transit.

Like, the comfort level of these Japanese masks, especially the ear straps, is so next level that I would wear these all the time.

Hello #SFBA #Ruby Fam:

The next #meetup is this Thursday at New Relic. I will be away at #RubyKaigi but I'm so thrilled to see the new organizers making this happen monthly! We already have host companies offering space for the future events.

I know it’s easy to be cynical about “politics” or current events, but let me tell you: if you and a few dozen people in your own town organize to make your streets safer, it can absolutely happen.

Lives will be literally saved by Traffic Violence Rapid Response advocating consistently for safety on a road that kills almost one person per month in . can happen.

Hey US car drivers:

This is your periodic reminder that cars are weapons and should be used with that in mind.

If you see a bike on the road in front of you, especially with a child on the back, do not follow them any closer than 50 feet because you are threatening their lives.

Under no circumstances honk at a cyclist or try to talk to them, even to say something nice - they are being verbally threatened by vehicles who look like yours all day, every day.

Thank you.

If International Boulevard was a serial killer who killed 12 people a year, the FBI would be all over Oakland.

But it’s a street and the victims are elder immigrants, so nothing happens.

Guess what I have to drive past on the school commute every day?

I am certainly predisposed to dislike this thing but somehow, it’s worse in person.

The paint finish looks incomplete and you can really tell in person how poor the driver visibility is. The windows are absolutely tiny and bizarrely angled. It’s definitely going to kill a bunch of pedestrians.

EDIT: It’s $125k?!?!

@xtaran was inspired by a question by @Dadmin about clothing. We chatted about this before, but that was ~6 months ago!

Q3. Do you have a favorite cycle-related t-shirt or other beloved piece of clothing with cycle-related motifts, slogans or pictures? Sporty-wear, casual wear, whatever, all are applicable.

Share photos if you would like!

The odometer on my cargo bike hit 1300 miles, free of petroleum, filled with kids laughs, replete with the ringing of bike bells while waving to other cyclists, and smiling the whole time.

This morning, I was leaving a coffee shop on my cargo e-bike and about five firefighters stopped me to ask questions.

“How much does it cost?”
“Can you take kids and groceries on it?”
“How often do you charge it and how far does it go?”
“Can we sit on it and take pictures?” (they did)

Sometimes I realize I’m more than just a cyclist - I’m an accidental advocate by moving around in a different way than most people.
