How often to do you track and note the things that you have learned: life lessons, education, training, mistakes avoided?

adayley,
@adayley@mastodon.world avatar

@SergKoren Most days I note such things.

adayley,
@adayley@mastodon.world avatar

@SergKoren @adayley Ah, I commented only on how often.

I have notebooks. One for work. One for spiritual stuff. One for personal journal. I use the same system in each.

  • Note items that struck me as interesting or that I want to remember.
  • Note future actions I think I want to take by adding an easy to see check box next to that note.
  • Flip back through pages seeking checkboxes not yet checked. Maybe do some.
adayley,
@adayley@mastodon.world avatar

@SergKoren @adayley

  • Every month or so make an action summary page by looking back through for unchecked items and pulling forward those still relevant or meaning full.
    — Add the summary page to the notebook index.

I only do about 20% of the actions. This is because I don’t do as many as I should and many are not as relevant as I thought when I noted them.

Anyone enjoying the weekend?

@SergKoren I am. We are visiting grandkids (and parents) in Yelm, Washington. Such a joy to spend time with them!

How about you?

Modern work:

you get a message in Slack with a link to the Confluence doc to prep for the meeting on Zoom, where you take notes in Notion, and track project progress on Monday and then update the Trello and you get to the end of the week and instead of doing fucking anything you've just moved bits of information around in 17 different databases and each one costs $15 a month per user...

adayley,
@adayley@mastodon.world avatar

@Daojoan The paperless office used to be something people talked about, aspired to create. We could have had it in the 1990’s.

But no. We have this <waves hands at your toot.>

SergKoren, to productivity

OK. I’ve time-blocked my daily schedule for next year. I’m sure I won’t follow it religiously, but at least I have a guide.

adayley,
@adayley@mastodon.world avatar

@SergKoren For the whole year? Do you make a “normal week” template and the tweak weeks here and there? How do you do it?

SergKoren, to Life

Progress is just a delta. It can be a positive or negative delta. Whether it’s good or bad progress is up to you to define. But progress without a goal is just motion.

This week, I was on a call with a customer who said: "Flow is the new euphemism for efficiency". The person talked about how folks grab and dilute a concept for the old status quo. In this case, we discussed fast in the context of @TeamTopologies.

💡 This triggered a reflection: our industry, the IT industry, has an obsessive focus on efficiency. As Russel L. Ackoff said, "The more efficient you are at doing the wrong thing, the wronger you become".

@joaorosa @TeamTopologies Efficentcy is the eternal euphemism for 100% utilization. Keep everybody busy even if that slows everything down.

I can design, with you, a new portfolio management system for your entire org. Visit https://www.linkedin.com/in/alandd Let me know what looks good or bad. I'm open for all conversations!

(Feels odd to say this here as I treat here as a social place, not a work place. But life is all the things.)

SergKoren, to food

So, do people still make hotcakes in addition to pancakes? I don’t think I’ve ever seen hotcakes on a menu or anywhere.

adayley,
@adayley@mastodon.world avatar

@robertnorlyn @SergKoren I didn’t know there was a difference. I thought those terms mean the same food, like pop and soda mean the same drink. What is the difference between pancakes and hotcakes?

adayley,
@adayley@mastodon.world avatar

@SergKoren @robertnorlyn Then, what I have always called pancakes are hotcakes. Interesting.

Genuine question: in light of how we've witnessed disinformation spread in the pandemic, is anyone anywhere on earth effectively addressing the digital literacy and science literacy gap?

I'd love to know about who is doing good, effective work.

Would you hug someone who smokes if you aren’t related and don’t smoke?

adayley,
@adayley@mastodon.world avatar

@SergKoren I have, yes. I don’t like it, though.

adayley,
@adayley@mastodon.world avatar

@SergKoren Yes, but it would have been socially awkward to refuse.

I have also hugged people willingly and learned they are smokers because I hugged them. Any subsequent hugs were less close, brief and avoided when possible.

The current crop of internet connected home automation and control products are annoying. The home automation light switch in my office stopped working. No response to any interactions.

Tech Support: Sorry for your concerns. Simply turn off the breaker for 3 minutes to reset the switch.
Me: So, turn off my whole office?
TS: Yes.

I have to reboot my house to use a light switch.

I notice two contradictory sentiments emanating from the same communities.

  • We want more collaboration.
  • Why can't the Product Owner (or Customer or ...) simply tell me what they want the first time?

adayley,
@adayley@mastodon.world avatar

@jbrains @lewiscowles1986

I like those reasons, Lewis. I would add:

  • Collaboration means paying attention to the needs of the work AND the needs of the people we are working with.
  • This is a skill that is hard to do at first or when not doing regularly.

Collaboration can be invigorating. I think it sometimes triggers enhanced energy expenditure without me noticing. It’s more of a euphoric feeling that results in feeling tired after a time of productivity.
