It's that (usually white) people here often advocate for the use of CW's to prevent them from seeing what they feel is objectionable content.
Problem is, truth hurts. So yes, it's not fun seeing e.g. police in the US brutalize black folks, but it should be clear that "please use hashtags to keep this off my timeline" is emphatically the wrong move.
One more thing, we're building an API to power discovery and follow recommendations in our project and the API will be open and available to anyone, including other fediverse projects! #fediverseInfo
@atomicpoet That's... Surprising, but obvious once you said it.
Send e-mail from a.person@mailserver.com to mail@a.mastodon.server, and a sanitized version of it is posted in Mastodon as coming from @a.person@a.mastodon.server. The reverse also applies, as an e-mail subscription service.
Moreover, SMTP and POP servers are tiny compared with current instance code size; shouldn't be too hard to integrate (yeah, right...)
Once upon a time, there lived a man who was known throughout the town for his penny-pinching ways. He never spent a penny unless it was absolutely necessary, and he would always find ways to haggle and bargain until he got the best deal possible. His name was Ebenezer, and he was the very definition of a cheapskate.
One day, while walking through the park, Ebenezer heard a bird chirping loudly. At first, he didn't pay it much attention, but as he continued on his way, the chirping grew louder and more insistent. It seemed as though the bird was trying to tell him something, but he couldn't quite make out what it was.
Days turned into weeks, and the chirping never stopped. Ebenezer began to hear it everywhere he went, whether he was at home or out and about in the town. At first, he tried to ignore it, but the more he tried, the louder it became.
Finally, one night, Ebenezer could take it no longer. He grabbed a broom and began frantically sweeping the room, hoping to scare the bird away. But the chirping only grew louder and more persistent, until he was convinced that the bird was accusing him of being a cheapskate.
In a fit of rage, Ebenezer grabbed a pillow and smothered the bird, hoping to finally silence its accusatory chirping once and for all. But as soon as he had done so, he began to hear the chirping again, louder than ever before.
Desperate to escape the relentless sound, Ebenezer tried to leave the town, but the chirping followed him everywhere he went. No matter how far he traveled, he could never escape the sound of the bird accusing him of being cheap.
In the end, Ebenezer realized that he could never escape the truth. He had been a cheapskate all his life, and the bird's chirping was a reminder of that fact. From that day forward, he resolved to change his ways, to be more generous and kind, and to never let the sound of the bird's chirping haunt him again.
Love the onboarding experience. Granted, I am already familiar with the fediverse in-general but the experience here seems the most friendly overall.
I'm not a fan of how channels work. In my opinion, they should essentially be the same as groups in Friendica or Communities in Lemmy or Guppe groups, so that people using other types of instances can check them out.
Love how easy it is to be found.
Love Misskey-Formatted-Markdown for sure! It's especially useful for things like little animations, such as in my introduction post.
I'm not going to be popular for this... but neither.
Both commit the cardinal sin of making half the worker ants male, rather than making male alate characters. It's petty but that drove me nuts even as a kid.
There is actually a precedent for this, Mastodon used to use a different protocol called Ostatus and a few years later switched to ActivityPub. No one noticed, all the account addresses and server URLs etc stayed the same, it just changed some techincal stuff behind the scenes.
@atomicpoet There's another somewhat smelly thing Jay Graber and #bluesky are doing. They're calling AT "open source" to suggest "hey, no worries, big money hates open source. You're safe from corporate bullying!"
What's not said? It's an MIT license. You can take it, throw huge money into your own version, add massive new features, and then NOT publish the source code (legally). This seems to fit @davetroy's thesis that this is all a puppet show, much more staged than we want to believe.
Do you know that Calckey supports multiple windows inside a webpage?
To create a new window, right click on a button on the left navigation panel. This will initiate a dropdown menu. On that dropdown menu, select "Open in new window".
This will launch a new window. You can do this multiple times for multiple windows!
@tom4okstate@atomicpoet I remember people having fun when they first got on Facebook. The little games and gimmicks, people were into it (from what I remember). #mastodon doesn’t have a fun aspect at all.
When you go check out a calckey/misskey instance (natively on the web) it’s very obvious that they’re having fun.
When you look at the MAU (monthly active users) for the top 5 popular #fediverse projects, you see just how many active users Mastodon has compared to the rest.
Calckey offers an interesting feature that I wish Mastodon apps included - the ability to view from what PLATFORM an account comes from. It's missing one thing, which is a clickable link that would take you to the official site of each platform to check it out. I think the beta API from FediDB might be able to assist with that.
Would love to see this in more apps, regardless of platform. Gives casual users a chance to check out other pockets of the fediverse out there.
I don't think people are realising the danger the Fediverse is in.
The only thing stopping corporations and VCs taking over this place is that the Fediverse is spread out on many different servers, which makes it very difficult to purchase.
If most of the Fediverse ends up on mastodon.social, which is now a strong possibility, there will be nothing to stop most of it being sold to Musk or Zuckerberg or whoever.
The bigger mastodon.social becomes, the more likely a buyout is to happen.
