People ask "Why are journalists still on Twitter?!", and while I get there are many reasons to avoid Twitter, the drawbacks of the would-be Twitters for news watchers and commentators are numerous and significant. Here's a chart I made to detail what they are. Tell me what's wrong in my chart! And hoping Mastodon and other contenders can turn more red to green!

jsamwrites,
@jsamwrites@mastodon.social avatar

@gaberivera Some of these non-features like lists, quote posts were meant to protect the users. I think that I would support individual users to configure their settings (per post or a global configuration). Quote posts, for example, is an oft-requested feature.

Full text search has been merged in main branch, and will be in the next (and final?) 4.2.0 beta 🎉

It is opt-in, so it will take some time to be filled with people content as they enable their profile to be indexed, but this was one of the most wanted Mastodon features for some time.

We plan to deploy it to mastodon.social and mastodon.online in the coming days to have a bit more feedback on it and see how it behaves in the wild.

Dear @Gargron,

Please reevaluate your decision to incentivise centralisation on mastodon.social in the official app.

This is the sort of design a VC-funded startup would implement, not a non-profit acting in the interests of a healthy commons.

I’m sure you don’t want mastodon.social to become mini-Twitter and you don’t want to become mini-Musk.

That’s not how we win this.

More instances, not larger instances is the key.

jsamwrites,

@tchambers @aral That's a great idea. Allowing a number of Mastodon servers on a round-robin or even random order will prevent the problems of centralisation of one server.

Tearing down the walled gardens:

@cwebber on Mastodon

“But at the very least, if a server goes down, it should not be catastrophic to you. Your social world shouldn’t live inside an app, or depend on a company staying solvent. It should, and could, be much bigger than that."
