The Midrash (Midrash Rabbah, Song of Songs 1:3,1) relates that when the Jewish people stood at Mount Sinai to receive the Torah, God asked for a guarantee that they would keep it.

They replied, “Our ancestors will be our guarantors.” When this was not accepted, they offered, “Our prophets will be our guarantors.” Finally they said, “Our children will be our guarantors.” God replied, “Indeed these are good guarantors. For their sake I will give it to you.”

Torah is a message from our future.

A Shavuot Ketubah is a marriage contract between God and the Jewish people written to commemorate the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai which we celebrate on Shavuot. It was a medieval practice among the Jews of Italy and North Africa. This is a rare illuminated Ashkenazi example from Galicia in 1914.

If you say that you're against "ethno-nationalism", that's not antisemitic.

If the only country you apply your anti-ethno-nationalism against is Israel, and not Japan, China, Korea, Egypt, the UAE, or any other country, that's

@serge @bp France has got to be the most ethno -nationalist country in the world. They require French language and music by law and forbid headscarves in schools.

@jewwhohasitall That sounds like a good topic for a segment on next week’s episode of Good Shabbos America!

baruch,
@baruch@babka.social avatar

@pixelherodev @jewwhohasitall Surely the second choice. They wouldn’t make a show addressed to all Americans unless they expected most people to watch it. Why wish a good Shabbos afterwards? It must be a weekly show on Friday about getting ready for the weekend! Of course, this week it’s moved up to Thursday because everyone will be busy celebrating a national holiday tomorrow.

@wherephysicswentwrong @drmikeh49 @Sherifazuhur @palestine @israel It always bothers me when people say that it is illegal simply for Jews to live in a certain place. Whatever happened to equal housing rights?

What we need is not one twitter to replace the old twitter but a whole armada of twitters.

Like the podcastosphere with all the different players.

Look at how much better that's working.

No Musk or Jack.

Think about it.

But Masto, you haven't got it yet. Don't gloat. Think about how to get there.

@davew Podcasting took off when the iPod made it mainstream. Maybe Mastodon will be the iPod of the Fediverse.

Bluesky is going to skyrocket to mainstream popularity and actually replace Twitter, and Mastodon cannot, because Bluesky is being designed to be simple, fun, and — most importantly — easy to understand.

Hillel the Elder was once walking down the street with his students. His students asked him where he was headed, and he responded, “To fulfill a mitzvah from G‑d. I am going to take a bath.” They asked, “Is this really a mitzvah?”

Hillel said, “If statues of kings that are made in the likeness of flesh and blood require cleaning and polishing, how much more so our bodies, which were created in the likeness of G‑d.”

Despite concerted efforts to depict a diverse multicultural society in Star Trek, there has never been a single explicitly Jewish character in the show or any of the many spin-offs. Nevertheless, there is a podcast dedicated to the relationship between Star Trek and the Jewish people.

For the first time ever, I’m torn about whether I should stay on mastodon.social.

Being here has given me a voice I’ve never had, to talk about a topic that I feel strongly about, and I feel I’ve made the world a slightly different place.

But I also wonder if mastodon.social is becoming even more hostile to the rest of the Fediverse.

Should I stay and fight? Or is this a lost cause?

@atomicpoet Is there a feature request to add nomadic identity to Mastodon? Let's get the campaign started!

A human mints coins from one stamp and they are all the same; but the king of kings, the Blessed Holy One, minted every human being from the stamp of Adam, the first man, and not one of them is the same as another. Therefore must each individual say, "The world was created for my sake."
