    @juddlegum it also ignores all the non-criminal structural violence committed against Blacks. When Black people are killed by health care disparities, for example, it’s not counted as a crime. Musk literally grew up in an apartheid state, and benefitted from white supremacist policies. I do not hold that against him (people don’t choose the situation in which they are raised) but the fact that he has no self awareness about this situation does not reflect well on him.

    @risottobias @dr2chase @mattblaze absolutely! Algorithms (for discovery on social media) get a bad name because they are mainly designed to maximize engagement, which can have some very awful consequences. But it doesn’t have to be that way!

    @xenophora @oliphant that’s addressed in the article. The author argues that (1) most of the money is for security and (2) it’s a celebration of the peaceful transfer of power to an elected leader.

    That said, as an American, I would be totally cool with a streamlined, cheaper inauguration.

    @xenophora @oliphant seeing your other comment, I realize your intent wasn’t a “whataboutist” defense of monarchy, but more of a “people in glass houses” perspective. Which is fair—the UK has serious problems but they have universal healthcare, don’t have mass shootings all the time, etc.

    @zarasophos NYT (who publishes this podcast) has an editorial firewall between advertising and journalists. Kevin and Casey might not be aware that a Square ad ran in that episode, and the people selling ads might not have known they’d be talking about BlueSky

    @irvingpop I usually hate this kind of gatekeep-y stuff, but in this case, it’s absolutely justified. If you don’t know the vim keybindings, you really don’t want to activate that mode (the same way I wouldn’t want to accidentally set my keyboard to Dvorak).

    Spam (like the torrent of cryptoscamspam lots of people got this morning) has been very rare for me here (and dealt with quickly), but I've noticed that almost all of the spam I've gotten has been via Mastodon's DM feature.

    I really wish there was a way to turn DMs off or at least restrict them to people I follow. Control over incoming DMs was a thing Twitter did better than here.

    @crashglasshouses @erik365 @JohnMashey @mattblaze DMs aren’t secure, but there’s a big difference between sending an insecure message to Alice and sending an insecure message to both Alice and Bob, when Bob (like most people) isn’t actively trying to read other people’s messages.

    Ammi Burke really going for it today, it's impressive in its own weird way.

    If you're not in Ireland and you're wondering what this is, it is a woman from a very weird ultra-religious family who got a job in the real world as a solicitor (lawyer), lost it by being weird, took the employer to the labour relations court, fucked it up in weird and interesting ways, took the labour relations court to court, and... well, that was today.

    She's consistent, if nothing else.
