❤️ Quoting as long as it is consensual.

For those who don't fully understand consent:

⭐ The default setting is NO.

@tiago @asayakkara @boud @LukasBrausch @academicchatter

That might be because "citing" implies content that was designed to be shared in a fashion that social media posts are not.

(e.g. a journal article vs an offhand comment)

Pragmatically: we will never have this functionality unless those resistant to it are given the choice to not have it imposed on them.

crecente,
@crecente@games.ngo avatar

@tiago @asayakkara @boud @LukasBrausch @academicchatter

Clarifying:

► "Imposition" is how it is seen by those who do NOT want quote tweets: "... unless those resistant ... not have it imposed..."

► Google engages in many harms; we are heading in a new direction which requires that we be better than them.

► Cultural norms matter even in the absence of explicit licenses (not to say I agree there are no explicit licenses here).

► We're not merely talking functionality but also form ... yes, we can take a polaroid of the message on the screen and scan it for a website, etc.

The hope is ease-of-use while being respectful of those creating the content.

Long term, it makes sense to consider many use cases, including those who have had bad experiences.

It does not matter if I have not had their bad experiences. Their experiences and resulting impacts are valid.

That should matter to me.

So… People put stuff in their robots.txt to “prevent” malicious scraping of their data for machine learning purposes. I hope everybody understands that this is just a “please don’t take my data” sign on the front lawn. We should be creating heaps of adversarial data instead. Data suitable to taint those datasets.

crecente,
@crecente@games.ngo avatar

@nblr

Agreed.

Belt & Suspenders:
Adverserial data + robots.txt.

With robots.txt we can show the bad actors were on notice not to scrape. Helpful for the lawsuits.

"The Cognitive Style of Subtitles"

Subtitles are becoming much more common these days -- on TV, in films, on livestreamed video conferencing, and in social media

It's damn interesting

Research finds that subtitling has really good effects on comprehension and recall

Here is an interesting piece about some possible impacts that AI might have on online communities.

Shown here is one that I feel has been a problem for many years:

"... everything new posted online is created by a machine or by someone looking to turn a profit."

Although I do occasionally find other voices online, big social media has been very effective in silencing too many of them. Their algorithms-tuned-for-profit and use of dark patterns has made it increasingly difficult to hear the helpful voices over the ugliness and nonsense.

And we've allowed them to improperly use Section 230 as a shield to protect them from responsibility for the harms they have knowingly created.

I can't imagine this will be successful. Here are a few articles (from 2016/17 unfortunately) that explore some issues around hashtag marks:

▪️https://jipel.law.nyu.edu/trademarks-are-hashtags-protected-by-trademark-law/

⭐ This last article includes a quote from Chris Messina, the originator of hashtags for social media:
"... trademarks don’t belong on hashtags. Hashtags are a kind of conversational commons, and should be owned by no one but the crowd.”

“I know how this information looks—when taken out of context, it seems bad,” Exxon CEO Darren Woods said in response to the Wall Street Journal’s inquiry about the documents that show Exxon executives strategized over how to diminish concerns about warming temperatures, and they sought to muddle scientific findings that might hurt its oil-and-gas business.

(Genuinely) not to be pedantic but it's helpful to explicitly distinguish between various interpretations of "gaming center."

The original article refers to E-Sports. I would place E-Sports in the same general category as tennis courts (i.e. student recreation).

However, it's important to not inadvertently lump those in with various university game labs / centers focusing on non-entertainment games (e.g. games for physical rehabilitation or public health).

Advancing our knowledge and use of digital games for prosocial purposes is, among other things, intended to encourage future generations to value media literacy and critical thinking.

⭐ Some design decisions we've made around our prosocial games are intended to make it easier for students to access them in libraries.

"10.1 Customer Content. You or your End Users may provide, upload, or originate data, content, files, documents, or other materials (collectively, “Customer Input”) in accessing or using the Services or Software, and Zoom may provide, create, or make available to you, in its sole discretion or as part of the Services, certain derivatives, transcripts, analytics, outputs, visual displays, or data sets resulting from the Customer Input (together with Customer Input, “Customer Content”) [...]"

This is so broadly written ("other materials"?) that it isn't clear if they define "customer content" to include our use of their service for video conferencing. Their privacy policy does carve out "meeting, webinar, or messaging content" explicitly so why don't they also do so here?

And if they are making such claims about video conferencing (and all it includes) they are delusional if they think the TOS grants them sufficient rights to do so.

The good news: Zoom now states they will not use "audio, video, or chat content" for AI training without end user consent.

The bad news: Zoom does not understand consent.

As with most big tech companies, Zoom seems to regard an unwieldy and unread set of policies as some magical talisman that indicates valid consent.

They are wrong.

⭐ Consent is, among other things, an ongoing understanding of what you are agreeing to and an appreciation of what that agreement entails.

HOW TO BLORRBLE BLOBBLE: A fun, lively exploration of consent in the context of learning new dance moves. Appropriate for middle school ages (11+). Stuck in a Dark Place: A wide variety of of scenarios about consent are explored through eight chapters of game play. Appropriate for high school ages (15+) but prior review by a parent or guardian is suggested. Title screen for the prosocial video game One New Message. A colorful, tidy, and somewhat cluttered student's bedroom is shown. A desk on the right has a laptop computer on top indicating instant messages. Award laurels in the bottom left surround "Winner, Life.Love. Game Design Challenge"; to the left of the laurels is a badge indicating ESRB rating of E for Everyone.
Promotional image for the prosocial video game Grace's Diary. The background is the woodgrain of a desk. On the right is a black diary with a stylized logo which says "Grace's Diary" at the top; underneath the logo are award laurels with "Winner Life Love Game Design Challenge"; underneath are two quotes: "4.5/5 Sensitive and Moving - Jay is Games" and "Surprised how much I learned - Wired". The left of this diary show around a dozen screenshots and quotes from reviews of the game. These are presented as being torn or cut out of notebooks or post-it-notes which appear taped to the wooden desk. Here are a few: "Beautiful. Touching. - Gamasutra"; "... fundamentally important. I hope more young people play 'Grace's Diary' - Chiktionary, Jay is Games"; and "Wow. That was ... wow ... Any game that makes my thoughts switch over to capital letters most of the time is truly amazing. - NotSoAnonymous, Jay is Games" At the very top-left of this image is a small tab with the word "memo" and it appears to be something that would be used in a game by clicking on it.
