During their Ability Summit yesterday, Microsoft's Chief Accessibility Officer interviewed "Barbie with ASL" performer Leila Hanaumi. The CAO asked, "If you could have one thing to make the world more accessible, what would it be?" Hanaumi replied, "For everyone to learn sign language." This flustered the CAO, who laughed and clarified, "What tech would you want?!"

This exchange hits different since I just finished reading Against Technoableism by Ashley Shew.

In his Axe-con talk, @ErikGustafsson shares the time he received a marketing email for a concert. The email exhorts the recipient to "Don't miss this!"

Which is followed by images of the band name, date and location, none of which has alt text. Seems a little perverse to demand that your potential customers not miss information, and then not give them the information.

Wondering if those foot-washing images were made by humans or generative software.

@aardrian
According to the Internet, they're created by a photographer named Julia Fullerton-Batten who has been creating uncanny looking photos for twenty years. So probably human-made, unless she recently adopted AI to save time.

Thank you to everyone who posts pictures of snowy scenery for Silent Sunday, or any other time.

Where I live, I'm used to seeing snow fairly regularly. But in the past two years now, we've only had one measurable snowfall. So I'm enjoying winter through your excellent photos.

The Fedilab Android app has a shiny new update. Posts that are too long can now be split into multiple entries and posted at the same time.

Also there are some nice accessibility related features:

  • Option to underline links in messages.

  • Option to always show the scrollbar, instead of hiding when not in use.

Thanks to the devs for this great app that keeps getting better.

Can anyone fill me in on the hashtag? Is it just serene photos or is there some other purpose?

dankeck,
@dankeck@a11y.social avatar

@mcnees
I've seen SilentSunday used three different ways:

  1. A photo of a serene and quiet place or thing. So "silent" refers to the subject of the photo.

  2. A photo posted without any comment or explanation. So "silent" refers to the person posting the photo.

  3. Any photo at all posted on a Sunday 😆

My preference is number 2, but I enjoy any and all photos with the hashtag!

Did you know that Fedilab, a Fediverse client for Android, has a translation button? It works on post content and also image alt text!

This example image comes from the German Aerospace Center at @dlr_next .

I skimmed through the quick, medium, and intensive wins. And unfortunately none of the wins was adding an option to switch to light mode instead of dark mode 🙁

Another year at Long Island Retro done. I loved it. It was our biggest and most successful yet. It was great. But I am so fucking tired right now. 😅

Hand holding a badge on a lanyard. The bottom says the word Staff in blue letters on white. The top of the badge is a silver shield on a gold background, made to look like the North American box art for the original Legend of Zelda. In place of the game title, it reads "Long Island Retro Gaming Expo 2023." The shield has an outline of Long Island, controller buttons, and a heart. The Nintendo seal of approval is replaced by "Sponsored by Jovia Financial Credit Union."
