TIL that Royal Mail is privately owned. This seems incredibly stupid.

If atmospheric CO₂ is 420 ppm, and direct air capture (DAC) is 50% efficient, we'd have to filter 0.63% of the volume of the atmosphere to remove 10 GtCO₂.

That’s a lot of air!

How will that affect microbial ecosystems worldwide?

Do people who are not oceanographers know that elephant seals have been helping us collect temperature and salinity data in inhospitable areas of the ocean for the last 20 years?

Does knowing that hydrogen and helium are the only gases that heat up when they leak, whereas other gases cool down, change people’s minds about using hydrogen widely?

Honest question: I measure gases as a career, and I’m always fixing leaks in my instruments*. How do people who push as a home heating solution propose to avoid catastrophic leaks?

*I use Swagelok fittings, the same ones used on airplanes and in industrial settings.

People who talk about an “EV bubble” should know that decarbonization of the transport sector will happen no matter what we do. So we could choose to do it on our own terms or let air pollution from ICEs kill a lot more people and then have to switch to EVs when the world runs out of oil.

davidho, to random
@davidho@mastodon.world avatar

If we want to make the energy transition equitable, public charging for EVs should cost the same as home charging. In the UK, public charging is more expensive because VAT for home changing is 5%, while VAT for public charging is 20%.

Lamppost EV chargers are the answer to how you charge your vehicle in cities.

This is possible because when energy intensive street lamps were replaced by LEDs, there’s excess power for charging EVs.

All cities should do this. ⚡️

The fact that “alternative transportation” just means you’re not in a car tells you everything that’s wrong with our transportation system.
