When I first started cooking Chinese / Malaysian / Thai / Indonesian food, I had very low confidence in my ability to replicate the street foods that I loved, growing up.

“I’ll never be able to cook like that Asian auntie!!” Went away when I looked at myself in the mirror and said, with confidence, “I AM Asian auntie.”

I can’t get over how Elon Musk is a classic Bond villain at this point, with the most essential attributes: an implausible-sounding name, absurd wealth, megalomania, out-of-control narcissism, a loyal cadre of sycophant minions, the ability to launch shit into space, “utopian” visions that aren’t actually utopian, and a singular obsession with James Bond.

And honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a secret volcano lair too.

Years ago, in college, I took part in a little theater production. One of the most fun things I’ve ever done, actually! After the wrap party, which was deep in Orange County somewhere, I dropped off one of my fellow actors at his house in Paramount—a “bad” neighborhood, by popular reckoning.

When we got there, there was a police helicopter, circling, spotlight on. He was like, there’s the ghetto bird again.

It unsettled me, but him? That was just life.
