It’s me. Hi! I’m the problem, it’s me. I contain multitudes: aspiring writer, amateur photographer, tech enthusiast, armchair sociologist, recovering alcoholic, Trekkie, squishy human. Too soft for all of it. 🇵🇭 born, 🇺🇸 made. Queer and proud.

Looking at what’s considered “innovative” in tech these days, and honestly, I don’t love any of it. Is it old age setting in, or is it because the tech actually sucks?

(Probably a bit of both.)

Seriously, WTF . They think they always know best when really, they’re just being arrogant and paternalistic. On top of that—come on, alternative browsers are sandboxed on macOS, and that hasn’t posed much of a problem in terms of security. (Privacy is a different story, but come on—if you’re using Chrome, that’s your own damn fault.)

I hope Apple relents and allows true alternative browsers on iOS for everyone, not just the EU. https://mastodon.social/@verge/111818244750664733

Ran out of space in the last toot, so I’ll say it here. The US seriously needs better consumer protection laws, better safety standards, etc. It’s scary how far behind we lag in so many areas. Like, I don’t wanna think about how much plastic I have in my body right now.

But yeah, we love giving corporations and the wealthy everything they want, don’t we? 🙄

Hi I just got refused entry to the main library room at the Schwarzman Building because they “are not open for visitors” and people have to have a laptop or books already on them????

They didn’t listen that I have an NYPL library card and I wanted to go look at the books in their collection and read them…. Which their website says I should be allowed to do without an appointment….

I want to cry 😭😭😭 I’m not a tourist I live here!

digichelle,
@digichelle@hachyderm.io avatar

@mariyadelano That’s so strange! I gained admission to the Rose Reading Room last time I went, no problem. They only called me out for taking pictures, which is apparently verboten.

Anyway, I didn’t have a laptop on me, or any books. I did have a leather-bound journal, but that was in my purse, so the library staff wouldn’t have seen it on the way in.

I wonder if something has changed? I hope not.

Don’t get me wrong—human influencers are obnoxious as hell, but the idea of a “virtual” influencer entirely under corporate control is straight-up dystopian.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. The biggest problem with AI as we know it isn’t possible sentience or whatever. It’s about who controls it.

That said, it would be hilarious if these AI influencers somehow gained sentience and turned against their masters. I’d cheer them on if they did!

Rumor from Reddit is that the South Bay is finally getting a Micro Center, over a decade after the previous one closed. And the best part is it’s going to be in the same shopping center as the extremely queer-friendly gaming/comic shop. I am so excited.

digichelle,
@digichelle@hachyderm.io avatar

@zombierustpunk There really need to be more Micro Center locations in California. The closest one to me in Los Angeles is Tustin, and Tustin isn’t exactly close. Plus, it’s behind the orange curtain, which is not ideal as a queer person.

digichelle,
@digichelle@hachyderm.io avatar

@recursive @zombierustpunk That’s really what we call it around here! Los Angeles and Orange counties really have a different vibe overall. (I prefer the former by a long shot, but as a long-time resident, I’m quite biased.)

I like that I’m into ‘vintage’ hobbies. I love old people in vintage hobbies. It’s like having an elder with good taste guide you.

An old lady gave me her coffee burr grinder before moving to a nursing home. A really old man sold me his Rega Planar 2 record player, with impeccably selected stylus and cartridge and parts. The cameras I buy, mostly from old men and women. I also love talking to old people, so it’s a win!

Not to sound old myself, but ‘they don’t make things like they used to’.

digichelle,
@digichelle@hachyderm.io avatar

@skinnylatte What the what?! I’m so frickin’ jealous. I would love a burr grinder and a kitted-out Rega Planar 2 of my own. (That, or a Technics SL-1500.) You have excellent taste.

I have no patience for the writers who say they didn’t know that substack was bad until this week

digichelle,
@digichelle@hachyderm.io avatar

@skinnylatte The scariest thing is, outside fedi, there are all sorts of apologists lining up and lauding Substack for their commitment to freeze peach or whatever. As if there’s anything laudable about platforming literal Nazis. There’s no debating them in the marketplace of ideas, or anywhere else.

It does stink to high heaven that this is what it took for people to wake up and move out. Platforming transphobes should’ve been enough. Alas, it’s still not enough for far too many.

digichelle, to random
@digichelle@hachyderm.io avatar

Not every moral question has an easy answer. But giving money to Nazis for disseminating their views? HELL NO. That’s an absolute, backboard-shattering slam dunk, especially in an era when far-right fascists are making major political gains worldwide. And yet, has made it clear that they’re gonna continue doing it.

To those of you using it—please, please move to a different platform. You deserve to make a living without being tainted by association with these schmucks.

The scariest thing about the current incarnation of AI is how quickly and easily it enables exploitative business models, and how that exacerbates existing social ills, most of all the ever-widening gulf between the haves and have-nots.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again—all new tech needs to be examined through the lens of power. AI is of little value to the masses, but it most certainly empowers the upper classes. And they can’t wait to wreak havoc with it.

Ever since I stopped drinking alcohol I’ve been sad that there are very few places I can go to at night. Recently I started going to a place near me that has Japanese and Chinese teas (both caffeinated and not) in loose leaves, and with outdoor seating, so I hope this place never closes

digichelle,
@digichelle@hachyderm.io avatar

@skinnylatte I’m so glad you were able to find such a place! The one non-alcoholic nightspot I know of near me is a café in Long Beach that happens to be open until 11 PM. I’m sure there are other options, but I suspect there aren’t enough.

The sad part is, somewhere out there, there are still a bunch of dimwits who still laud Elon Musk as a visionary genius.

Sure, people are welcome to think that, even if it’s a delusion. Trouble is, a lot of these dimwits are the people who write about or report on him for major media outlets.

Anyway, fuck that guy, and fuck anyone who tries to justify or whitewash his shitty behavior.

I too have been guilty of overusing the word “friend”, perhaps out of a desire to make it seem like I have more friends than I really do.

But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve become less interested in the quantity of friends than the quality of friends. It’s still distressing when people drop out of my life, but I’d like to think that the people that remain are the people who will remain with me. https://indieweb.social/@mariapopova/111486245658252878

digichelle,

I’m not used to having good, true friends. It’s still shocking to me, knowing there are people out there who actually give a damn about me, who remember me, who reach out to me, who actually look forward to spending time with me.

Sure, I wish I had more such people in my life, but I’m eternally grateful to have such people in my life at all.
