Everyone wants to do the fun work, everyone wants to play with grand ideas, but getting people to actually do the gritty, challenging, in-the-weeds work is really difficult.

Getting people to agree on how to do the in-the-weeds work is really difficult.

Then, getting people to acknowledge that you did the work is further complicated.

draNgNon,
@draNgNon@hachyderm.io avatar

@hrefna there is also the point where enough work as been done that thing is now able to be useful with lots of handholding.

workerbees do a lot of unacknowledged handholding and leadership is meanwhile celebrating work completion.

many versions of this exist, just search for "in the beginning was the plan" -- here is one from the army:

It takes a singular genius to run a company into the ground as efficiently as Musk seems to be capable of doing. Like between Twitter and Tesla it's pretty clear that my parrots—and possibly my chickens—could do a better job.

draNgNon,
@draNgNon@hachyderm.io avatar

@hrefna I've been thinking about that, and I realized it's very familiar-feeling. like the weird tendency of Google projects to be either deprecated or not-yet-ready.

it's that some people can't maintain. the rush they get is disrupting, either building up something new or tearing something established down. maintaining something (successful or not) is boring to them, they cannot deal.

    Okay, so the news on the FTC voting to ban noncompetes is interesting, but I've now seen several people commenting on that article with variations of "Google employees will now leave…"

    Noncompetes are already generally illegal in California. NDAs also sometimes get classified as noncompetes there ( https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/01/14/google-nda-illegal-california/ ).

    They are mostly illegal in Colorado.

    Like, I know you want to see companies get their comuppance and all, but can you at least not spread misinformation while doing so?

    draNgNon,
    @draNgNon@hachyderm.io avatar

    @hrefna I did not say that, at all.

    but since you post about it, I will retort with: many tech companies would be perfectly happy to leave you unaware of where non competes are and are not enforcable, and certainly Google lost in court a couple times about it.

    this FTC ruling effectively reduces a cognitive load on trying to remember if it applies to you or not...: it does not if you are in the US.

    that said, I think it's more... relevant right now to health care employees than tech workers.

    When I think about the security of a computer system, I have a specific scale I rate it on:

    1. The US government can crack it OR the government of China can crack it (equivalent)
    2. The government of Israel can crack it
    3. My friend Kristin could crack it
    4. The government of Russia can crack it
    5. A nation-state not listed above can crack it
    6. A well-qualified single infosec professional could crack it
    7. I could crack it
