    From a personal point of view:

    Here's why I do not buy the "ADHD meds are addictive for people with ADHD" bullshit:

    You know how ADHD folks keep saying "Look, if it's that addictive, why do I forget it all the time?"

    I think this morning a finer point on this hit me, after many days without it and taking it a little late for work today:

    If I do not take my ADHD meds, I don't notice. At least, not until it is way too late. Because this is our default mode as ADHD folk. This is who and how we are.

    I do notice when I have taken them. Many times, I feel them kick in - not like a jolt of some drug, but suddenly, I realise I can focus and express myself clearly when 10 minutes earlier I was struggling.

    driftercarbon,
    @driftercarbon@disabled.social avatar

    @grrrr_shark It's why I have to put my meds in a pill pack and double check that I've taken them, otherwise I'll forget. ADD meds aren't the most important thing I take but damn do I function a lot better with them than without.

    @grrrr_shark It's a shame it's going to be five months before we get more. I recently bought the 9th/10th Doctor bundle and the 11th Doctor bundle on Apple for $20 each, so I can just rewatch those in the mean time. Who's your favorite Doctor so far? I fluctuate between 10 and 11 but right now I'm leaning more in the direction of 11.

    Origins: Ultimate Edition is $4 on GOG right now. That's obscenely cheap for what is one of the best I've ever played. If you've not played this gem of a game yet you're really missing out. It doesn't get cheaper than that. Comes with lots of extra campaigns to play after you play the main story, including one really big one. The writing and characters are unforgettable, and your choices affect future games in the series.

    driftercarbon,
    @driftercarbon@disabled.social avatar

    @bookworm I enjoy the Fable games, too. Dragon Age is so beloved because of the strength of its characters, with some really memorable party members with strong personalities and meaningful interactions. The writing overall is very strong, excelling in both dramatic and comedic moments. The gameplay, in my opinion, improved in it's second sequel (Inquisition) but it was still very solid in Origins, and some prefer this version of it. Hopefully that answered your question.

    I didn't expect Buddy Daddies to have such a great ending. 😭🤧

    I thought there would be a season 2 to look forward to, but it really seems like they kept it to 12 solid episodes with a satisfying conclusion. I didn't really get "hooked" until 3 or 4 episodes in, but I'm really glad I stuck with it. In the early episodes, it was hard for me to get past the fact that they were trying to make two seemingly remorseless contract killers sympathetic leads. Every "aww" was followed by a, "... oh, right, they kill people for money and they don't think twice about it." lol BUT the more they explore it, the more it all starts to come together and it works. The show kind of expects you to see something more in these guys that they don't even see in themselves, and it pays off. Def one of the best 2023 , IMO, I slept on it for too long.

    It ends with some moderately Christmasy episodes, so if X-Mas is your jam and you want a really solid short anime series to watch that is seasonally relevant and somehow manages to blend very sweet, wholesome comedy with stylized hyperviolence, then I would recommend Buddy Daddies. lol It's a weird dynamic, but it works.

    @ADHDefy Did you get a chance to check out Spy Family this year? Season 1 was my favorite of last year that I saw this year. I'm watching older stuff now but whenever I finish Fractale I should resubscribe to Crunchyroll and watch season 2 (which came out this year).

    ADHDefy, to random
    @ADHDefy@easymode.im avatar

    What a year it's been. I know that it's not quite over, but as we get closer to the new year, I can't help but spend more time reflecting. My life doesn't look too terribly different from the outside compared to this time last year, but it's a completely different experience inside.

    I have learned so much about myself and life. I've pushed back on my negative core beliefs, I've challenged some of my most steadfast perceptions, and I've never been so connected to my emotions in all my life. I've learned new ways to express myself and communicate. I've made difficult decisions, and confronted fear and heart break, and most amazingly of all, I read multiple books! Like... what?!

    I was in a really bad place for a while there, and while I still have a lot to learn and a long way to go, I feel like I have begun forming a really solid foundation for a happy life. I am finding every week that I'm a little kinder to myself, I'm discovering more of my joy and passion, my mask is coming off, my wounds are healing, and I'm that much more hopeful. I'm so, so grateful for all of the support I've had that allowed me to take these strides.

    This coming year, I hope to work on my circumstances. This year was all about reclaiming my independence and reacquainting me with myself, so next year will be about connecting. I want to find meaningful employment, to begin building a life of purpose, to connect with more people and spend more quality time with those that I care about, to play some live music again, to do some volunteering, maybe go on a date or two, make some new friends, maybe try out some ADHD meds, and maybe even spend a little more time in nature.

    The last few days, I have been overwhelmed with a mix of excitement, and doubt, and gratitude, and anxiety, and warmth, and loneliness, and love. I kinda feel like I might explode, but I am living into it because it wasn't all that long ago that I had trouble feeling anything at all. It's really beautiful, and this has been the happiest holiday season I've had in a long time.

    Honestly, this probably should have been a journal entry and not a social media post, and maybe parts of it didn't make a whole lot of sense, but there's something cathartic about putting a message out into the world, you know? So thank you for reading. In the spirit of connecting: what are you looking forward to in 2024? What do you hope to accomplish? What did you get from 2023? I'd love to hear about it. 🙂

    driftercarbon,
    @driftercarbon@disabled.social avatar

    @ADHDefy That's really great to hear, I'm glad you had such a productive year. I'm not really sure what I'm looking forward to in 2024 if I'm perfectly honest with you. I'm probably going to try and find a decent job next year. I spent most of 2023 trying to overcome health issues that have really thrown a wrench in the works. Got to visit family, that was a plus. I really hope you find what you're looking for in 2024. Sounds like you've set some good goals and I believe you can achieve them.

    I've been really excited for since they announced it. I was one of the few people I guess that actually liked Captain Marvel, and I love Brie Larson in the role. I also loved Ms. Marvel. It wasn't a perfect show, but it had so much heart and Iman Vellani is THE stand-out addition to the post-Endgame , imo.

    But I started to sweat a little when the release date started crawling up and they basically stopped marketing it. I was getting Secret Invasion flashbacks. Now reviews are rolling in, and one of my go-to critics that I typically agree with had some real bad stuff to say. In fact, I don't remember the last time he was that harsh on a film. 😬

    Is this going to be another forgettable bomb? 😭

    driftercarbon,
    @driftercarbon@disabled.social avatar

    @ADHDefy Captain Marvel is one of my favorite super hero films. I like that it's a lot more grounded for most of the movie, and does a good job of establishing her character. I don't really go see movies in theaters much anymore, but I'll sure as heck watch it when it hits D+. I've been seeing ads for The Marvels near daily, so they are promoting it, just maybe not as well as they could.

    Who lives in a territory that observes DST and gets an extra hour of sleep tonight?! 🎉

    👍 This guy. 👍

    I think Daylight Savings Time is stupid and antiquated, but I'll never be mad at gaining an extra hour. In fact, I think we should only give an extra hour, twice per year indefinitely. Will it eventually make time in relation to daylight meaningless? It certainly will, but papa needs his beauty sleep.

    Also, I'm really sorry I called myself papa. It was unpleasant and I won't do it again.

    driftercarbon,
    @driftercarbon@disabled.social avatar

    @ADHDefy Honestly, I'd rather we just not change times at all. There was a motion in congress or something a while back to try and cancel DST once and for all, and I got really excited. But then it failed. Extra hour is nice, but it's not worth the opposite a couple months later.

    I bought Alan Wake on Steam back in 2013 and I'm only just now playing it for the first time. The crazy thing is, besides some elements of the graphics, it feels like a game that might have recently come out. I'm not even playing the remaster, just the old version and it holds up extremely well.

    I'm about to begin Chapter 6, but the first 5 have been a blast to play--except for the driving levels. Those are ass. Also, the birds. The birds can F off.

    Despite any minor gripes, I am pretty damn invested in the story. I am a little bummed that I didn't get into this game sooner, but I'm also happy to have the chance to appreciate it now. I'll def be checking out Alan Wake's American Nightmare and finally beating Control before AW2 inevitably hits Steam.

    Though, my next game after this will be replaying Eastward before the new DLC drops. 🤌

    EDIT: For anyone playing the original (not remastered) AW, try these launch options: -noblur -sensscale=0.60. They remove the awful motion blur and mellow out the camera sensitivity.

    Learning new skills with can be tough. Obviously, it is a learning disability, so there's that, but also, if I'm interested and the hyperfocus kicks in, I can learn fucking rocket science in a week if I really want to (okay, maybe that's a slight hyperbole... 🤔). The hardest part for me when I actually care about something is that it's so hard to just let myself be a beginner. I wanna be a master TODAY.

    I've been studying voice acting for the last few years (off and on, because consistency is hard), and I've come a long way in the last year especially, but I'm still lacking a lot of vital experience and my brain is telling me to skip five steps and dive into the deep end NOW.

    Almost got scammed selling some stuff online. 🤙

    Had a person send me their number as an interested buyer and told me to text them. I did (first mistake), and we arranged a meetup time. Then they asked if, for their safety, they could send me a six digit code (some of you already know where this is going) that I could repeat back to them to verify myself.

    I said, "absolutely!" And sure enough, I got a Google Voice verification number. lol

    If you're not familiar with the scam, shady people will take your phone number and try to create a Google Voice account with it. If you provide them with the 6-digit code that Google sends you, they can "verify" that they are you, and then basically use your phone number to run scams, commit fraud, etc. It's nasty business.

    I called them out, blocked them, then reported them to the marketplace website and to the FTC--though, almost certainly, they were using the phone number of another poor soul to carry this out.

    I used to work as a social engineer, running phishing campaigns (ethically, with consent lol), against Fortune 1000 companies to assess their level of vulnerability. Luckily for me, I was super familiar with this, but most of the people I told about it have said, "Oh, I probably would have fallen for that...", and even I set myself up for it.

    So that is why I'm posting this. Please be aware of sketchy shit like this. If someone is asking you for a verification code over SMS or email, tread with EXTREME caution. Also, it's usually pretty shady if a stranger you're already chatting with wants to move to a new platform. Not always, but if someone emails or messages you on Facebook to ask you to text them, that's a little weird. I'd had legitimate buyers/sellers do that, so it's not unheard of, but it should put you on guard.

    If you buy/sell/trade online frequently, it's a good idea to use a dedicated MySudo number, VOIP number, and/or a burner phone for that.

    Stay safe out there, kids.
