I just re-watched "Howl's Moving Castle" because I had forgotten what exactly it was about. I nodded off towards the end, and I'm sure that in a few months I will once again be unable to recount the exact plot.

But it looks so gorgeous. I love the depiction of early 20th century European cities. The "airplanes" are a nod to Nausicaä or Laputa but are animated much more fluently. The quality holds up all the way to the end. But the plot just feels so obtuse to me.

it took me four months to read through this collection of essays, stories, interviews and written thoughts from hayao miyazaki, and it was absolutely worth reading it slowly.

about half of the book are conversations about how-it-was-made or reflections on characters like Nausicaä. they're interesting for anime-manga aficionados, artists and animators.

but what stood out to me most reading Starting Point was miyazaki's ability to think. he thinks non-reductively, without ever turning to either lazy idealism or pragmatism. there are moments where it is clear he has read social theory, but the ideas are always expressed as everyday, grounded experiences - and not floaty/cloudy/tangled academic musings.

he just thinks, out loud, a lot. this is someone whose entire day is consumed by thinking, and animation just happens to be one of the creative practices involved in expressing the thoughts for other people.

this is not something depicted in any documentary i've seen about studio ghibli - which tend to focus on his personality, emotions and production process.

Studio Ghibli To Be Awarded Honorary Palme D’Or At Cannes 2024 (www.empireonline.com)

Even as the beloved Japanese animation house theoretically winds down, Studio Ghibli is flying high. Hot off the heels of that Oscar win for The Boy And The Heron, the accolades just keep coming – the studio is being recognised at the Cannes Film Festival next month, set to receive an honorary Palme d’or at the 77th...

The films "The Wind Rises" and "Howl's Moving Castle" lost the Oscar to "Wallace and Gromit" and "Frozen", and well, "Ponyo" wasn't even nominated. I find it hard to believe that Miyazaki has only won 2 Oscars instead of 6?. Although it is also true that this surely has no importance for him, since these are data that define the quality of the Oscars more than that of Miyazaki's films 😒

still working my way through hayao miyazaki’s Starting Point - a collection of essays, lectures, letters - from the animator from 1979-1996. every few pages has a real gem or two.

this is a small comic he made for JAL passengers. i adore and share in his passion for human-sized aviation history.

Castle In The Sky (1986)

Studio Ghibli's debut film strongly evokes similarities with "Zelda - Tears Of The Kingdom". It is rich with meticulously crafted details.
Overall holds up extremely well for its age.

I'm sure with a 100% confidence that the scene in where the large space-ship shaped rock floating in the sky over the hill is introduced is a reference to something similar, but I can't put my finger on what it's a reference to (to wit, the sunken ship with the trees where young Kiriko lives is obviously a reference to Böcklin's —the ). Anybody can help me with the floating rock in the sky reference?

On a slightly more serious note: The boy and the heron is so very much worth watching. Obviously the animation is at an almost mythical level, there are buckets of charm and animals talk a lot. But the story is the driving force behind everything; coming of age, loss, growth, selfishness, selflessness, happiness, and so much more.
