I am either listening to music, hanging out with my dogs, or playing drums. I passed on the opportunity to see Radiohead in Florence in 1997 and still feel dumb about it. FKA drummmerandy on the bird app.

a lazy Saturday morning listen to Bobby Charles’ self titled country funk style album from 1972 (2014 LITA reissue). With musical support from members of The Band, a chilled out soulful song based record. Kind of a playful humour going on too, which I enjoy.

@arts @vinylrecords this record was not on my radar at all until a few years ago when a band leader had me learn a song so we could cover it. What a revelation.

It's the time of the year when I wish I could just spend the next seven months listening to the music that's already been released in 2024 because SO MUCH of it is top notch killer shit and I don't want it to be forgotten.

As someone who has seen an from totality and from 98%+, I would like you to know that 98%+ rounds down zero much more than it rounds up to totality. If you're at 98/99% you might think "eh good enough" but it really isn't. The corona effects are orders of magnitude different IMO

I mean 98% is still cool and weird in its way

drummmerandy,
@drummmerandy@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely couldn't agree more. I saw the 2017 eclipse in totality and it was much more intense than I expected it to be. The difference between almost total and fully eclipsed was surprising.

I'm not a serious King Crimson fan, in fact hardly at all, but I'd go see this lineup if it was playing nearby, which is isn't, but they're playing just about everywhere else in the US, so here.

Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Steve Vai, Danny Carey is the lineup. I'm a huge Belew fan, Vai not so much but he can play the Fripp parts, Levin is great, but Tool drummer Carey is the ringer here - a chance to see him (he's insanely good) play non Tool material 👀👀👀

We need a word, short phrase, acronym, or perhaps ideally an otherwise semantically null emoji to indicate that you are aware of, and have taken into consideration, the crimes, misdeeds or personal failings of an artist or other creative figure and have decided to continue enjoying or appreciating that person's creative work, perhaps by way of a postmodern view centering artistic meaning in the act of interpretation rather than creation.

I suggest 🤹🏾‍♂️ unless that already means something kinky.

@mrcompletely I feel like there is some sort of threshold right around Phil Spector/Bill Cosby for me. Personally I can listen to PS 🤹‍♂️ but not BC.

Happy to everyone else who has also read Dubliners, Portrait of the Artist, and half of Ulysses

@mrcompletely in fairness, I am actively reading Ulysses. But I can't claim to be more than halfway through it.

@mrcompletely an acquaintance who teaches it recommended the reader's guide Ulysses Unbound when I told her that I wanted to read it. Honestly, it helps a lot and I think my understanding of it on the first pass is far higher as a result.

Since lyrics are all terrible anyway I think a couple bands should pivot to songs that are just about the act of jamming in exactly the same unironic way that post Zeppelin 70s rock bands had songs about rocking. What have they got to lose?

  • For Those About To Jam
  • I Wanna Jam All Night (etc)
  • We Will Jam You (OK that needs work)

If someone doesn't do it earnestly, Tapers Choice will do it as a joke and the opportunity is lost

You know the wooks and spunions would eat it up

Does anyone on here know the story behind why the Mickey Hart/Zakir Hussain-led Diga Rhythm Band changed the track order between the original LP release and the subsequent CD/streaming version?

My assumption is that they originally wanted to lead off with the guest spot, despite Sweet Sixteen and Magnificent Sevens being better opening tracks (imo). But who knows for sure. Nothing I found online gave any rationale for the shuffle.

Album cover of "Diga Rhythm Band" with a black and white photo of band members surrounded by percussion instruments, text above and detailed album and artist information below.

@mrcompletely just went down a bit of a winding path trying to find out anything about Jordan Stenberg. Turns out he changed his name to Jordan de la Sierra and made some influential new age albums. Alas, no poster, but I did find a tapestry.

I'm finally listening to Clifton Chenier Live At Tipitina's, many weeks after it was delivered from the Tipitina's Record Club. Some great blues and zydeco on here, sourced from a soundboard recording on an old cassette from 1980. Tight band was playing straight fire. C.J. Chenier sounding good on alto sax (I didn't know he played sax!) but Sonny Landreth steals the show on guitar in his only recording with Chenier's band.

Prince was better at pretty much everything than you or anyone you know is at anything.

drummmerandy,
@drummmerandy@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely my dad was friends with a guy who played in Prince's live band and the stories were just outrageous.

drummmerandy,
@drummmerandy@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely he knew Eric Leeds. Not super close, but they had tight mutual friends. Eric said in no uncertain terms that prince could play circles around every musician in his band on their primary instrument.

Which, I guess, is a thing that people know about Prince. But it's still astonishing.

It's rare for me to share negativity, but I was so excited to see a new out (his first in 30+ years) and it's..... bad. Like I have fought through some books before, and there's no way I am wasting 700 pages worth of my time on this hamfisted, bloated, unbelievable nonsense. Really disappointing, because I adore everything else he has written. Buyer beware in case you were thinking of getting it.

@PaulInRainCity @mrcompletely @wobs totally feel the same way about HST. There's only so much savage depravity he can throw into his writing before I just wish was reading one of the first few books again.
