Blunt reminder: Meta is a for-profit entity that is beholden to its shareholders. It makes money by aggregating data and profiting off of it by selling advertisements. Their involvement in the fediverse is informed by that, and that alone.

enron,

@waldschnecke @yunchtime as a user, you can totally block threads if you want to, or any other domain for that matter.

On a profile for any user, hit the three dots overflow menu next to their name. In the dropdown, the last item should be โ€œblock domainโ€ - just search for threads.net, pick a profile for someone on that instance, and block away.

Thatโ€™s part of why federated socials are better - you donโ€™t even need to fully rely on your admin to get the kind of control that you want.

I'd like to follow/be mutuals with every and on Mastodon, and I bet I don't even have 10% of y'all in my follow list yet! Let's start to fix that!

Reasons for music fans to follow me:

  1. I am mutuals with a HUGE number of musicians, and I promote the fuck out of them, so you'll be exposed to lots of new music

  2. I write about at least a half dozen of these artists every month, giving you some insight into what they make and why you might like it

  3. All the cool kids do it

enron,

@etherdiver @johann yeah, thatโ€™s one thing we know for sure - is not

Apparently Teenage Engineering took their Pocket Operator line and spun it into a more robust platform at a reasonable price point. Let the Black Friday GAS commence.

enron,

@flockofnazguls Seems really capable to boot - I'm really liking the whole mechanical switch with pressure sensitivity hack they have on this

If TE is smart, they'll lean into this form factor as hard as they did with the PO lineup

enron,

@limebar aye, this was the video that led me to the news

cuckoo does a pretty good job of practical reviews that have a good flow, and my mind was made up by the end of the video

enron,

@limebar I love how the effects are set up in a way where you just kind of mash buttons, only this time hitting the buttons harder actually matters

The looping function is really interesting, especially since it loops events on the MIDI out as well as the audio, you can totally use it as an inline MIDI performance effects unit

TE says 30 days til shipping, which is too damn long

ok look I know this is really stupid and pedantic, but come on, weโ€™ve had 26 years to learn this

Wi-Fi. Hyphenated. Both words capitalized.

thank you for coming to my ted talk

(while you're here, โ€œlog in" is two words when being used as a verbโ€ฆ your login button or link should not say "loginโ€, because the action they take is to "log inโ€)

enron,

@marcoarment Thereโ€™s nothing quite like seeing a self-described pedantic post insisting on the correct use of capitalization and punctuation while riddled with incorrect capitalization and missing punctuation.

No, I donโ€™t miss 100% of the shots I donโ€™t take - those shots exist in a superposition of both hit and miss and taking them would collapse the waveform

enron,

@chemoelectric shit.

ummm if I take all these shots there wonโ€™t be any left for other people?

(yeah, Iโ€™m gonna go with that one)

enron,

@chemoelectric that can work

also, I donโ€™t need to take any shots, we have shots at home

I spoke to a very interesting group of people last week about the prospects for Public Social Media.

I feel I should write a brief essay as followup and I am staring forlornly at my text editor.

How shall I explain to people unfamiliar with the why it represents a promising opportunity for their organizations?

Often I find people making fun of things moving into the browser rather than just running as software but the fact is the browser increasingly works better than my regular OS. Like in my experience Linux works universally quite poorly at most GUI things I want to use it for, Android works a bit better than that, & Chrome works much better than that. Chromebooks would sound like a great idea to me if only I trusted Google (and if I didn't believe everyone developing ChromeOS is using a MacBook)

enron,

@mcc have you looked at Capyloon? https://capyloon.org/

enron,

@mcc it is. Forked from FirefoxOS, with images for desktop and Pinephone/Librem5 - seems like a spiritual successor

It bears mentioning that Songtradr is a music licensing and digital rights management company. So the first thing users can expect to go out the window are DRM-free downloads, signaling a push towards platform lock-in.

Theyโ€™ll probably keep for a time, but slightly increase their cut off the top the rest of the time, framing it as a compromise. That cut will continue to increase in a frog-boiling way. Eventually, downloads will only be available at a premium, requiring DRM and their proprietary player. Theyโ€™ll pivot to being a Spotify competitor.

Youโ€™ll pay for the music, the artist will get less, and you wonโ€™t have agency over how you can play the music you paid for. Theyโ€™ll start paying by the stream instead of just offering albums for sale.

And thatโ€™s when the ads will start.

18-24 months, roughly. And thatโ€™s assuming Songtradr cares about maintaining any good will with the community.

Hopefully Iโ€™m dead wrong about this.

enron,

Some context - this track dropped within weeks of 9/11 as nationalism was ramping up to a fever pitch. US media outlets immediately stoked the sentiment. It was an epidemic of flag-waving and demonizing of any criticism of the US response.

enron,

I was in my first and only year of university, in a new city, trying to fit in with my new environment.

I left my dorm and saw the footage on the common room TV. Fellow students were all agape, horrified, dumbstruck at how this was possible.

I shrugged and muttered โ€œsomeone finally did it,โ€ and walked outside for my morning smoke.

This did not earn me any friends.

enron,

For months afterward, I got in dozens of arguments with people about the history of the US as an imperialist nation. How we had been committing atrocities with similar death tolls globally for decades, and it was only a matter of time before someone fired back.

It didnโ€™t matter. I was branded anti-American. I fought with my sister about the danger in unquestioning nationalism and where that leads. I was questioned by campus police about my sentiments.

It was a profoundly isolating experience, and I know that the only reason thatโ€™s all I had to go through was because I was a white kid. I had the luxury and privilege of saying these things without risking my life or safety.
