Apple needs to fix its VoiceOver issues before it develops other big and exciting shiny things. Maybe it’s jjust me but this whole strategy hasn’t seemed to be planned out well, unless what I suspect is true and VoiceOver really is the least of their concerns. Here so many of us can’t use our phones to do basic tasks without standing on our heads and counting to 47 by 7s and Apple is already showing off their next toy. Am I the only one who’s annoyed by this?

You know, I sincerely hope that the protest actually does something constructive. We need to stop companies from destroying there 3rd party supports because all it does is cause a rift between first party users and 3rd party users, especially when the first-party programs are not comparible in experience with the alternatives. It only lessens your customer base and as a whole, tanks the business your trying to make happen as seen with ' antics.

I want to put this out there for anyone who needs to hear this. No identity is wrong. No identity is bad. No identity means you're a bad person. No identity should be considered a phase or something you'll get over. If your identity changes over time? That's okay! It's completely okay to try things and see what feels right for you. It's completely okay to think your identity is one thing, and later figure out that actually it's something else. It's absolutely valid to go through changes. But no matter how you identify, don't let anyone tell you it's a phase or that you'll get over it. No identity is invalid. No identity is shameful. Be you. Be your authentic, full, true self. Embrace who you are. Because no part of that identity, that is authentically yours, is wrong, shameful, or something you should suppress. Whether you're sure of exactly who you are, or if you're questioning something/multiple somethings, or even if you're not sure on anything yet and still figuring out who you are as yourself. You're so, so valid. Keep being you. Always.

Hey @mastoblind and other and folks: are there any focused instances or communities yet? Do we know the status of Lemmy with a ? The mod team over at /r/blind has been discussing the way forward for us if the API closes. We have no firm plans or anything, but it would be good to know things about where the largest Reddit alternative stands, and if moving the r/blind community to the is even a workable proposition at the moment.

As we roll into Pride Month, remember the convo isn't cis people versus trans people. Nah, that’s bullshit.

The convo is about decent human beings versus irrational bigots who want to harm people not like them.

Dehumanization is not something that one negotiates. Ever.

Yes, I am . However, I watched a movie or video last night, I saw a post online, and I occasionally watch over the baby while my stepmother is up stairs grabbing something off the nightstand. I didn't hear the video, I didn't hear the post online, and I wasn't listening over the baby. No, I'm not literally watching with my eyes, but I still use those words. Why? Because they're used by ordinary people, and I too am an ordinary person, just without usable vision.

I want to share a youtuber today that some of you may not have heard of. He goes by Gorilla's Playthrough, and he makes gaming content with the visually impaired in mind. In other words, his content is audio described. He does this with style, using a few audio editing tricks to enhance the experience. All this to allow the blind to experience games they may not otherwise be able to, since so many games are inaccessible to us. I encourage blind folks interested in gaming to check him out, including those who don't currently game themselves but want to experience this form of entertainment in a fun way. I also encourage folks to check him out as well. If you are unable to implement blind accessibility into your game for whatever reason, maybe reach out to this guy. Maybe just maybe this will result in us getting an audio described playthrough of your game, which can be its own way of experiencing what you've created. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/@GorillasPlaythrough

Election 2024 isn’t going to be the Democratic Party against the Republican Party. It’s going to be democracy against fascism. That’s right: it’s going to be Democrats against Nazis.

I hate it when blind people use the excuse of "I'm blind, so please excuse any typing/dictation errors".

Or, how about we treat you like a normal member of society, and hold you to the same standards as everyone else? If the only thing that doesn't work is your eyes, you have absolutely no excuse to not go back and edit text aside from being lazy. You're painting blind people as being unable to proofread, when a lot of society already has assumptions that we can't type, or use a phone. Stop it.

I'm Liam Erven and I'm currently working towards becoming a certified Assistive Technology Instructor. I've found a deep sense of satisfaction in teaching others to use technology. Nothing brings me more joy than watching my students excel.
In addition to my studies, I manage a YouTube channel for visually impaired gamers. The channel covers a range of gaming topics, from mainstream games to those that are specifically designed for visually impaired individuals.
I also run a company called LWorks, which is focused on creating high-quality audio games for those with visual impairments. One of my most notable projects is 'Super Liam', the first side-scrolling platformer game for the blind.
Beyond this, I frequently join discussions on several popular podcasts, sharing my experiences as a content creator and promoting the importance of inclusion and accessibility for those who are blind and visually impaired. I am also an easter egg in jackbox Party pack 8.

We understand that the people who invent phrases like "differently abled", "visually challenged", and "persons with ocular diversity" have the best of intentions. But we promise, words like "blind" and "disabled" or even phrases like "people with disabilities" are not bad words. Say it loudly and proudly. "Blind"!
