The entitlement of some dog owners in is unreal. I hope this women gets everything that is coming to her & is made an example of to other dog owners.

In a local park & my then 3yo had an off the leash dog jump on him & try to lick him. The dog was being playful, but my son was terrified. It took years for him not to cower in front of any dog. Dogs should be on the leash at all times. They're animals, regardless of how well behaved their owner thinks they are.

eyrea,

@paultk It's not just being in leash, but being trained to walk on leash. Too many dogs are technically on leash but don't walk with their walker. The dog doesn't understand why strangers are always annoyed.

It's my 45th birthday today! I always sew myself something special for my birthday. The Named Saraste Top is one of my favourite patterns ever AND it still fits me so it was the perfect choice!

I used the Lise Tailor "Nino cats" viscose fabric which brings me so much joy. 🥰

I've got lots more to say about this top, plus a rundown of my previous 20(!) birthday makes, all over at https://blog.fehrtrade.com/gallery/9557/a-birthday-cat-saraste-top/

A white woman in her 40s with straight brown hair is smiling in the sunshine. She's wearing a dark blue collared shirt with white cats all over it.
Detail of a shirt collar worn on a white body. The shirt is made in dark blue fabric with sketches of white cats all over it, with dark blue buttons.

eyrea,

@fehrtrade What a fantastic tradition! Happy birthday!

(Love that button placement for the collar and the overall shape of the shirt!)

Last night our cable internet box randomly died. It’s totally fried and must be replaced. This happened just as my husband got home from work, waking me up to tell me the governor of NY had issued a warning about power outages during the Coronal Mass Ejection (there was a big solar storm last night) — basically I thought the world was ending and put my laptop in the oven. (it’s a faraday cage)

I may have overreacted.

eyrea,

@lampsofgold @futurebird We effectively have one every time there's a big power blackout.

The last big one, I cycled home from work (just dumb luck I'd taken the bike that day), hung out with my neighbours, then went to the local pub, whose owner had bought a stack of mini blackboards from the local toy store and was tracking tabs on them. The Milky Way was right over our street. It was fantastic.

The annoying violin problem of having to relearn a symphony because the last time you were playing the other part.

Violas don’t have this problem.

Very important to make sure that there is no snow on the roof of your mountain cabin 😀

CR: Norway: blessed with nature

eyrea,

@VeroniqueB99 Extra funny if that roof has solar panels like it looks like it does.

How long will I be able to suffer with this excruciating pain before I head to the ER and submit myself to needles? Just over an hour so far…

I recognize this pain and symptoms very well, from six years ago when I had to go to the ER via ambulance and ended up having kidney stones. Hoping I can drown myself in lemon water and just pass the stones in urine, but fuck is it ever painful right now!

And why, if I’m normally a very private person, do I feel comforted by sharing this on Mastodon?!

eyrea,

@DanielMenjivar @miguel_angel Hope you're doing okay!

FWIW, my grandmother's home remedy for passing kidney stones was eating lots of watermelon.

eyrea, (edited )

@DanielMenjivar I don't know if it actually helps, but at least you get to eat watermelon! It is watery and astringent at least.

Hope they pass soon.

Who is almost 40 years old and still had to ask her mother which setting on the newfangled dryer was “tumble dry”??

It me :blobfoxpleading:

eyrea,

@aronow I lived as an adult for over a decade with only access to a washer. My ignorance is hard-earned.

Which is why I only use my current dryer for bedding and towels.

My main problem with the idea of magic where you draw transmutation circles and such is that I am certain that if they worked, I'd be able to build a PCB to cast the same spell.
And now you've got a setting where your toaster works by casting tiny fireballs. Do you want that?

eyrea,

@foone That's not too far off from how the temperamental thing works now.

I can see some advantages to knowing if someone has autism if they are in school. But, I don't see the benefit for adults. Provided they are generally happy and coping with life OK.

It does seem to be something that people find valuable and helpful, so I'm missing something I think.

eyrea,

@futurebird @sidereal @CedarTea Performative cheerfulness, especially in interactions with women, needs to get a really bright spotlight shone on it.

So many people seem to believe that either that's how you're supposed to act normally, or that it's something women should fake until they really feel it.

Meanwhile, forcing cheerfulness can cause misunderstandings (it wasn't that bad, you're smiling!) and misdiagnoses (it can't hurt that much, you're smiling!).

eyrea,

@futurebird @sidereal @CedarTea Very true! Personality designed by committee.

I keep meaning to post this video -- only 7 minutes long, but such a great essay on and consequently , and how those intersect with... a whole lot of things, really.

(If you have body dysmorphia or are recovering from an ED, maybe skip. Overall it's a positive video, but I know triggers don't care.)

Absolutely endorse this column from Ed Keenan in the Star.

“The public is paying for the World Cup and Ontario Place redevelopment, so why are the deals secret?

When the costs and benefits of any government action are kept secret, how is our democratic system supposed to hold that government accountable?”

https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/the-public-is-paying-for-the-world-cup-and-ontario-place-redevelopment-so-why-are/article_f9d07e82-e5f4-11ee-89a2-dfcc56f8c05e.html

eyrea,

@c_9 I don't understand how anything at the provincial or municipal levels can be secret. If it's about an individual's privacy, okay, like medical records. And of course some things during contract tendering need to be kept confidential for a time.

But whatever it is Ford's doing at Ontario Place, it's not exactly getting American diplomats out of 1970s Tehran or something.

How to use Mastodon:

Step 1: Sign up.

Step 2: Do regular social media stuff.

Journalists: Only those with advanced degrees in computer science should even attempt to navigate Mastodon, the frustrations of its complexities will drive the average user to a state of hysteria.

eyrea,

@fkamiah17 @lowqualityfacts Twitter: slow growth which eventually goes exponential with events like the Miracle on the Hudson causing it to make the news, before it settles to a standard user base. Which journalists say is too small, because:

Facebook: small and limited access (certain students only, then students only, before eventually engaging the entire public), which eventually goes exponential before settling down and needing to be inflated.

Journalists: ooh so successful 🤦🏻‍♀️

eyrea,

@penciledpage @lowqualityfacts Yeah. I've seen some people here complain their follower count wasn't rising as expected, and how does the algorithm work here?

eyrea,

@alexwojtak @lowqualityfacts Well. Personally I think we should be doing both.

eyrea,

@jamesholden @lowqualityfacts No, step 1 of getting an email is having someone from IT tell you what your email address will be. Plus years ago they signed up for Gmail and don't remember.

Mastodon could be better explained, but if someone is a tech journalist, they shouldn't be the ones complaining it's complicated.
