Time to formally welcome @bluebuild to the Fediverse!

This is the project that makes it easier for you to make your own custom images of Fedora Atomic Desktops.

If you've wondered how to use an atomic system while still being able to customize and tinker, this is another good place to learn more!

fedora,
@fedora@fosstodon.org avatar

@moashy_mango BlueBuild may be able to help with that, but Fedora MATE could also be an option. If you have more specific feedback on the state of accessibility in Fedora, please let us know.

Anyone from images are they all long term supported if not which one is considered LTS? I don't know much about Fedora or its ecosystem. Been mostly debian/ubuntu/arch linux over the decades.

fedora,
@fedora@fosstodon.org avatar

@Corb_The_Lesser @talesofaprinny Nailed it. In this example, if you're on Fedora 40 you know that you have one month after the release of Fedora 42 to upgrade and stay on a supported version. That's why 13 months to give a little extra time.

What some people do is hang back one major release. So if you start with Fedora 40, skip Fedora 41 and only upgrade to F41 once F42 release. That way you're still getting new stuff to you every 6 months, but it's 6 months after it's been out in the wild.

fedora,
@fedora@fosstodon.org avatar

@Corb_The_Lesser @talesofaprinny It may be a little more involved to specifically choose one version to upgrade to vs another, and unfortunately outside the scope of what I as the person writing this post knows.

Bluefin from @UniversalBlue manages this for users so that you will always be one version behind the latest major release by design. Might be the easiest way to run your system at that pace.

Besides introducing a new brand, Fedora Atomic Desktops had some specific updates to it in the Fedora 40 release.

As a refresher, we're talking about Silverblue, Kinoite, Sway Atomic (was Sericea), and Budgie Atomic (was Onyx) - all under one umbrella!

@fedora Fedora 40 is way too unstable I'm locked out of my workstation, disk encryption does not recognize my password (I know it's the right one). Looking a forums it seems that I'm not the only one. You guys have a workaround for this ?

fedora,
@fedora@fosstodon.org avatar

@zebulon If a solution doesn't come up in the forum and there isn't a bug report for this already, please file one with more information at the link below.

(I'm not able to find a bug report currently)

You could also try presenting your issue specifically and see what contributors provide.

@fedora #Fedora 40 #IOT will be my first #immutable OS for my home #server (in hope to have the same experience i have with the VM i use (#Silverblue) that give me a 2 #commands #upgrade each version.

If i where writing a letter to them (maybe since i mentioned them) i would ask an #easier way to auto update #podman #container.

And a #native (auto #decryption) of the #OS using #TPM ship (i know the tuto on fedora magazine but sometimes it fail i woule prefer native one).

fedora,
@fedora@fosstodon.org avatar

@deflockcom if you're looking for a home server solution, CoreOS may be a better fit since it still uses rpm-ostree but may not be so focused on the IoT use case in it's configuration.

Fedora IoT 40 got some cool under-the-hood changes. :fedora_iot:

First is that Fedora IoT now uses the unified core model, making them the last rpm-ostree variant to make the switch.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Fedora_IoT_Unified_Core

CORRECTION: The bootable container image change did not end up making it in Fedora 40.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Fedora_IoT_Bootable_Container

fedora,
@fedora@fosstodon.org avatar

@ikkeT that's a question worth asking because they are both server-oriented OSes that use rpm-ostree. Contributors on the forum would know best.
https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/

But if you experiment and find out the answer we (person behind this account) would love to know.

fedora,
@fedora@fosstodon.org avatar

@deflockcom when you install Fedora IoT you're starting with a base image. When you update Fedora IoT, a new image will download. The "update" is that rpm-ostree will now boot off the new image you just installed instead of the image you were previously using.
