@fedora #Fedora 40 #IOT will be my first #immutable OS for my home #server (in hope to have the same experience i have with the VM i use (#Silverblue) that give me a 2 #commands #upgrade each version.

If i where writing a letter to them (maybe since i mentioned them) i would ask an #easier way to auto update #podman #container.

And a #native (auto #decryption) of the #OS using #TPM ship (i know the tuto on fedora magazine but sometimes it fail i woule prefer native one).

fedora,
@fedora@fosstodon.org avatar

@deflockcom if you're looking for a home server solution, CoreOS may be a better fit since it still uses rpm-ostree but may not be so focused on the IoT use case in it's configuration.

Fedora 40 is out! 🚀

Are you using it?

I am actually thinking of switching. I think I used Fedora once or twice previously, but was Distro hopping so never daily drove it for a few days properly.

fedora,

@jglypt give it a shot if you're able!

Okay y'all, I can officially say that Fedora 40 Workstation is inaccessible. After you install the OS, the first start window opens, allowing you to choose a network. I cannot move around in this window. I cannot use Orca commands in this window. Alt + Tab only leads me back to that window. Control + Tab, F6, F10, Super + F10, do nothing.

Linux evangelists may say "Well there are different spins, dude! Use the Mate one, dude!" That's not the point. What do people see when they go to download Fedora? Do they see Mate first? KDE first? No. They see the Fedora 40 Workstation, using the Gnome desktop. Their flagship is not accessible. I cannot say that I'm surprised. I might try the KDE spin next. Or I might just go to Mate where at least I know it can't get any worse than that.

It's a slow day here at work. So I decided to embrace being an agent of chaos and update my main system to Fedora 40 on day one of release.

Time will tell if today remains a slow day.

(Remember to always backup your systems before an update, kids)

fedora,

@Keionys good luck with the Fedora 40 upgrade. Debian is also a great place to land. :)

If Fedora 40 had a headlining change, it might be @kde Plasma 6. The KDE SIG have brought over all the hard work from that community to give you a solid desktop experience from day 1.

We're also pushing technology forward by making this release Wayland-only, though X11 apps will still work!

Plasma 6 is also available for our Kinoite users. :kinoite:

Silverblue and Fedora Atomic users - here's a guide on how to rebase to Fedora 40.

The graphical example used is for Silverblue, but if you follow the terminal instructions they will work on any Fedora Atomic Desktop. Just pay attention to use the name of your variant where applicable.

If anything goes bad, you can rollback to Fedora 39. Additionally you can pin your current image if you need to go back after a few updates.

Fedora IoT 40 got some cool under-the-hood changes. :fedora_iot:

First is that Fedora IoT now uses the unified core model, making them the last rpm-ostree variant to make the switch.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Fedora_IoT_Unified_Core

CORRECTION: The bootable container image change did not end up making it in Fedora 40.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Fedora_IoT_Bootable_Container

fedora,
@fedora@fosstodon.org avatar

@ikkeT that's a question worth asking because they are both server-oriented OSes that use rpm-ostree. Contributors on the forum would know best.
https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/

But if you experiment and find out the answer we (person behind this account) would love to know.

fedora,
@fedora@fosstodon.org avatar

@deflockcom when you install Fedora IoT you're starting with a base image. When you update Fedora IoT, a new image will download. The "update" is that rpm-ostree will now boot off the new image you just installed instead of the image you were previously using.

Ever wanted to do 'dnf swap' on a Fedora Atomic system? It doesn't work exactly the same, but here is how you can do that.
