The devastation in has really shown up those artists and writers who are willing to take a stand (too few sadly). Writer @monicabyrne13 is one of them. Here she calls on us to support the independent writers, artists and journalists we value, to enable them to do their work free from the growing constraints of the system.

Monica's recent novel is an absolute must read for an incredible vision of a possible future for humanity, linking through the present to the far past.

The 'slow motion execution' of Julian Assange

A very worthwhile half hour with Chris Hedges interviewing Craig Murray on the breaking of legal precedents in the Julian Assange extradition case. A great summary if you're not familiar with the persecution of this publisher of US war truths (and much more besides).

@rotoole @scalzi This is a piece I've always found useful when considering which artists (of any discipline) get to make a successful living from their art. Hard work and talent are factors in there, but not the only ones: https://monicacatherine.com/2020/02/27/the-five-actual-factors-of-success-for-an-artist/

Request: novels recommendations for young adults that are not set in a capitalist or feudal culture. Could be or or or any other genre. Preferably not one that is about fighting a capitalist system nor a dystopian novel but instead one where the lives of the characters takes place in a wholly different culture.

@franktaber The Actual Star by Monica Byrne. Set in three separate times, roughly now, 1000 years ago, and 1000 years into the future, but all centred around a cave in Belize. The future she imagines of a nomadic but connected human race, whose society is built around never staying in the same place for more than 9 days, is completely fascinating. https://www.monicabyrne.org/the-actual-star

Edit: does have detailed sex scenes so depends on how young your adults are.

Good article from Caitlin Johnstone on subtle vs blatant :

“Russian forces launched drones and missiles at cities in southern Ukraine from the Black Sea early Tuesday, Ukrainian officials said, a day after Moscow blamed Kyiv for an attack on a bridge linking the occupied Crimean Peninsula to Russia.”

Can you spot anything funny in that sentence? It’s not super obvious at first glance...

If some people say the is a left-progressive project, it only shows how successful we collectively are to block the Nazis. Loads of far-right instances and users exist in the fediverse. Gab, anyone? But defederation and blocking makes that part invisible to most of us. They still exist and federate amongst themselves. ActivityPub, the protocol, is neutral. We decide what we want and not want. The fediverse is a herd of Venn diagrams, not a closed circle.

flash987,
@flash987@hachyderm.io avatar

@jwildeboer I guess in a sense there is no single , but a multitude of overlapping fediverses (and entirely separate fediverses) and which instance you belong to determines which fediverse you're in, and what it can feel like. Sure, most people reading this thread will feel part of the same fediverse, but it's always going to be different to a greater or lesser degree depending which instance you're looking out from. (I think I may have overused the word 'fediverse' in that post)

is imposter syndrome this feeling that i am bad at this and everyone else is good at this? i don't feel like an imposter necessarily, just inadequate. same thing, different perspectives?

flash987,
@flash987@hachyderm.io avatar

@trailshark I think key to imposter syndrome is that you feel inadequate at something, but you imagine (or know) that everyone else sees you as competent, and you're worried about being found out.

Useful image from article "Symptoms in individuals with adult-onset ADHD are masked during childhood”

It visualises how can be present in childhood but not show up due to a high ability to adapt because of e.g. a stable home / higher intelligence. And then does show up in adulthood when there is less support and potentially more stressful events.

In the UK, the NHS website currently says they don't diagnose adults unless symptoms were present in childhood!

Since I shared a Bill Hicks reference earlier.

He's not a well-known comedian, at least I don't think he is...increasingly, at this point, since he's dead.

But this is how he closed out one of his last shows.

It transcends standup, where standup becomes simply "people saying shit without a filter."

re: , we cannot actually boost the original post because of yet more fediverse infighting (so we're reposting the image here under a spoiler), but, god we are so tired: https://rage.love/@unfitmisfit/109985158172152257

this is not "drama", we aren't focusing on the person in question, beyond pointing out that she has invoked the white privilege of being able to walk away from a difficult conversation just because it's hard, and that's not a privilege everyone gets.

also, defederating over this isn't anti-racist praxis (ETA: except when it is, see footnote). it's the sucralose of praxis. it's disposability culture. it's the no-effort way out and does very little to actually curb racism, but i guess it sure does feel good to smash that "dispose of" button.

anti-racist praxis involves more subtle things, like "confronting the systems of power that let these covertly racist bootlickers rise to positions of control", "reflecting on one's own position in reproducing those systems", "recognizing when an apology is full of white tears", and the dreaded a-word ("accountability"), but, we know people in generally are really NOT ready for that conversation, so we're going to climb into our asbestos fursuit and scream into the void

Footnote: the way rage.love defederated hachyderm is praxis — it wasn't a knee-jerk reaction, there was a good-faith effort to curb the objectionable behavior, and the efforts led nowhere. THAT is a justified defederation. kneejerk fediblock-style 'on-sight-on-blast' is not.
