My only in-person walking tour for 2024 is in Stoke Newington on Saturday, 24 August.

I am excited to get back on the street to introduce guests to the wonderful ghost signs in the area that I first started documenting and researching these remnants of advertising past.

More details and tickets are here on my website: https://ghostsigns.co.uk/tours/

I would appreciate any boosts, and please do share with friends in London that might enjoy the walk.

Catch them while you can; ghost signs don't last forever.

Sadly, when John Connell headed out to photograph this multi-layered palimpsest in Wakefield, it was gone, lost to aggresive cleaning of the brick between 2016–23.

My guess is that this was an off licence, but maybe someone with local knowledge might remember?

My name is Sam, and since 2006 I've been obsessed with 'ghost' signs* like the one behind me in this photo.

I write a blog (https://ghostisgns.co.uk/blog), have published some books (https://ghostsigns.co.uk/publications/), and share stories via my walking tours (https://ghostsigns.co.uk/tours/).

My interest in these fading painted signs also led directly to my work on contemporary sign painting at BLAG (@blag / https://bl.ag).

*NB. I didn't coin the term: https://ghostsigns.co.uk/2017/01/tracing-the-origins-of-ghost-signs/

I'd love my 'local' feed to be more aligned ghost signs-related topics, eg history, urbanism, architecture, advertising, graphic design, etc.

Is there a nice, perhaps smaller, instance I should consider moving to?

I'd prefer mastodon—I'm used to it now, and could bring my existing posts with me—but I would consider other fediverse services.

I'd be grateful for a or two😀

@jaeclectic @Infrogmation @noladon Exactly as I've just done 🙏🏽

I don't have anything from New Orleans on the site, but a search did throw up this post with a 'faux' ghost sign: https://ghostsigns.co.uk/2012/07/faux-ghostsigns/

@pfefferle I've got this installed and like the publishing to the fediverse. Is there a straightforward way to include replies as comments on WordPress if I'm using the Disqus plugin to manage those?

@pfefferle OK, thanks, depending on its complexity, my designers may be able to code something. Do you have documentation or any guidance on where/how they'd need to tinker?

A curious palimpsest here, where it appears that the earlier horizontal Dubonnet piece was painted out to create two panels on the wall for later signs.

It's from Dole in France, but I don't have any more precise location details than that. Perhaps someone that knows the area could help?

This is 1/2 (other below) sent to me by Ian Dennis.

More Dubonnet on the blog here: https://ghostsigns.co.uk/tag/dubonnet/

Interesting piece on @theconversationes about types of 'image' in urban environments; and the value society places on them.

The authors introduce the notion of "urban visual justice", and contend that "all public images are culturally significant".

https://theconversation.com/images-shape-cities-but-who-decides-which-ones-survive-its-a-matter-of-visual-justice-216003

Many of these themes run through my Stoke Newington Ghostsigns Walk (https://ghostsigns.co.uk/tours), questioning what has legitimacy on the street, and who decides.
