I'm shocked, shocked that we won't be able to keep warming to 1.5℃. Who could have seen that coming.

Business as usual will result in warming of around 3.4℃. My bet is we'll wind up closer to that than to 1.5℃, due to the fact that shortsighted, ignorant, selfish, greedy people run the world. I don't know if civilization can survive that kind of climate. I guess we'll find out the hard way.

    @christianselig all mine were from the very first one (iphone 1). i bought it at t-mobile. had to get youtube working myself. ifile to the rescue! cydia upped the game a ton (thanks saurik). (thanks dev team). kept jailbreaking until, inevitably, apple added enough of the great innovations of jailbreak devs that i didn’t feel a need to anymore. still miss themes. not enuff to go the userland jailbreak hassle…

    In 2020, the emergence of COVID-19 gave us a stark, terrifying, but very valuable lesson in how thin our collective values are once push comes to shove. Within WEEKS after lockdowns started, the op-ed class repeatedly suggested that

    • We should suspend child labor laws (they claimed, incorrectly, that children weren't harmed by COVID)

    • The elderly have already lived long enough and should be willing to die now to help the economy.

    • The weak and compromised should be regarded as expendable.

    Can be difficult not to under estimate the help one has received in life, & to over estimate self reliance & personal input

    Isn't that the root of much selfish behaviour, thinking, voting, politics:
    believing "I made it on my own"?

    Maybe we should positively & nostalgically but clear eyed remind people of all #healthCare & #education they got as children, #housing/job market security, #community etc their parents had access to

    Been a heavy user of all the Twitter alternatives for a minute now and I gotta say Mastodon is my favorite. There are definitely some features I’d like to see here (like quote posts and a DM inbox), but the community on Mastodon seems to have the best vibe and there are so many smart techies that it’s been the most helpful for finding sources.

    @sdw yeah, i’d like the jetsuns maid. i’m cool with using ai as another tool tho. i also wasn’t fussed when photographers were upset about iphoneography. and i’ve sold my world here and there since i was a teen, even after i expressly made it all creative commons. fans will support art they like.

    COOL! The spicy article I wrote about satellite pollution is FINALLY published! "Bright satellites are disrupting astronomy research worldwide" in Nature News & Views.

    This article required weeks of back-and-forth with the editor, the editor-in-chief, and Nature's lawyers, so I hope that means it's a good one.

    During this process, I learned that satellite companies are so powerful and litigious that even giant publishers like Nature are terrified of getting sued. Which is...rather worrying.

    I couldn't maintain the intermittent fast today, fluffy coffee goodness got me through breakfast but I cracked and just ate lunch, didn't make it until evening after workout like I planned.

    I find it tricky being hungry when I'm having a down day.

    Oh well always tomorrow. However I do have a nagging suspicion that maybe intermittent fasting isn't for me, but some days I do ok with it.

    @nixCraft it was because the board felt their mission to safely deploy ai was being lost in the speed of commercialization sam is all about. ie, they were trying to be responsible. guess no one really wants that.
