Where do people get their SSL certs at reasonable prices these days? I'd like to move some (mostly Wordpress) sites to shared hosting at Blacknight, from a VPS so Let's Encrypt would no longer be suitable

james,
@james@jamesgallagher.social avatar

@ahnlak Don’t see a huge amount of support among Irish hosting companies alas. I guess the smaller ones are still very reliant on the revenue SSL certs brings

It runs in the family (my mum’s cousin runs this top rated noodle stall in Singapore)! So nice to see their recent success after so many years of toil

New day, new content up on CoffeeGeek! Here's Robyn's introduction to what nitro-coffee is all about (along with some tips on doing it yourself at home!

@coffeegeek @coffee Love nitro coffee.

Tangent: Before Guinness 0.0, a non-alcoholic bar I used to go to had a nitro coffee tap. They did a drink which was 50% non-alcoholic porter and 50% nitro coffee which resulted in a Guinness like body (taste was closer to Murphy’s or Beamish I think)

I don’t know who spread the rumor in the west that rice cookers are simply ‘unnecessary single use gadgets for foodies who eat a lot of rice’, I think of them more as ‘versatile device for depressed people with no (emotional, not literal) spoons’

Put rice (don’t even need to wash it), water, place vegetables, meat, tofu, eggs. Add soy sauce. Close the lid. Walk away.

And if you get a nice one: cook rice and eat off the cooker even 3 days later.

Even the cheap ones are so handy.

@skinnylatte I read their article on picking a rice cooker and now I’m kind of obsessed with Zojirushi

@skinnylatte The Hainanese chicken rice and Biriyani recipes there might just tip me over to buying a rice cooker

Could you be in an Open/Poly Relationship?

P.S. This is a place to discuss your own personal opinions about yourself and your choices, or ask earnest questions of others if they wish to answer. If you've come here to preach or degrade other's choices, that is a block from me.

james,
@james@jamesgallagher.social avatar

@RickiTarr I hope to be … I don’t underestimate the level of effort needed so I can see some stress/anxiety if/when I start a relationship

This is the best frozen har gow. It tastes better than many lower end takeout dimsum spots in San Francisco. Just steam or microwave it yourself at home.

I know this because I’ve eaten many bad frozen har gows before finding this one!

I’ve been crying nonstop because I’ve had to confront the idea of losing my best friend. She suddenly deteriorated and has a bunch of things. Her age makes it hard to guess what recovery will be. She’s already 14, which far exceeds the lifespan for her breed (typically plagued with chronic health conditions, which she doesn’t have).

This morning she regained some energy (she couldn’t walk yesterday) and started eating again.

james,
@james@jamesgallagher.social avatar

@skinnylatte I am so so sorry to hear that. It’s such a hard thing to contemplate and try to process. Great to hear that she doesn’t have the typical health issues and got out and about to her favourite shops

Is it possible to host a mastodon instance on a subdomain (e.g., social.example.com) and have a regular site on the main domain (example.com, or example.com redirecting to www.example.com), with the accounts all being @ exampleuser @ example.com?

james,
@james@jamesgallagher.social avatar

@kboyd I haven’t done it but other folks point to the instructions for WEB_DOMAIN and LOCAL_DOMAIN on https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/config/#web_domain

I'd like to apologise for generalising cyclists and writing a thread that took an approach that was hostile to cyclists. The thread was bad discourse.

The thread has been deleted.

Discussion on greenways in Ireland earlier reminded me of this: https://www.openrailwaymap.org/ - it includes historical railway lines but for some reason you have to zoom in to see them. I think that greenways are good, and not every historical railway can be reopened, but the authorities are more likely to turn a former railway with reopening potential into a greenway than a former route with no potential. Maybe let's make a new greenway that wasn't originally something else?

james,
@james@jamesgallagher.social avatar

@kevinteljeur do you know who has created that map? I’m looking at Roosky in Co. Roscommon close to me and I don’t think it’s accurate. I’d be worried someone would show up somewhere that’s not a great experience
