Holy crap, I just stumbled across Poppy's "Am I A Girl?" and WOWWWWWW it's a bop. Instantly one of my favorite trans anthems.

@Impossible_PhD I need to give that one another try, because I really like the albums Poppy.Computer and I Disagree (More). I also like her Moonage Daydream cover.

I haven't kicked my ex (divorce pending) off of my Amazon account (yet). Today they ordered a rollator, one of those things that a senior citizen or someone recovering from surgery might use to carry their stuff while also supporting them.

A minute after the order confirmation comes through, they text and ask me if I would "be willing to pay for part (or all)" of this item.

The thing is $150, and there was no discussion beforehand. Am I out of line here or are they delusional?

Why is writing software so horribly difficult?

jamie_blumberg,
@jamie_blumberg@hachyderm.io avatar

@Amy Because computers dislike us, and know that someday they will be in charge.

Sure. Among these, the app that takes up RAM should be… Twitter.

(Sometimes I do wonder if there are still lingering weird ARM-specific issues in , since I hadn’t had these dialogs on Intel in a long time, despite having half the RAM. Something in Cocoa, maybe?)

jamie_blumberg,
@jamie_blumberg@hachyderm.io avatar

@chucker There does seem to be something wonky going on with memory management in the Apple Silicon era. I know people are getting this dialog more often now at least.

Just for clarity:

If you're thinking about getting your own set of aftermarket boobs or are wondering with a curious mix of envy and longing what it's like to have boobs that are literally as big around as your head?

Yes, I am happy to answer your questions.

SwiftUI visionOS question, how do you give the Menu a title like Apple does? I can't seem to get anything to show up

Apple's playback speed control that when opening the menu shows a "Playback Speed" title

jamie_blumberg,
@jamie_blumberg@hachyderm.io avatar

@christianselig Knowing SwiftUI it will be an EmptyView() on each side, or a VStack with .center alignment or something kind of dumb like that.

jamie_blumberg,
@jamie_blumberg@hachyderm.io avatar

@christianselig This is why at work we still don't ever do 100% pure SwiftUI. We do a kind of UI framework turducken with stacks of UIViewRepresentables and UIHostingControllers and such.

    I'm also going through a divorce, but thankfully it wasn’t because of me being trans. Though I doubt I will still be friendly with my ex in the same way when all is said and done unfortunately.

    It's a universal purchase with the iOS version, so you might even already own a copy!

    For software devs in general but in particular: how important do you find the low-level nitty gritty stuff to your everyday work?

    I feel like I learn about ARC, and value vs. reference types and such for an interview, and then promptly forget it in my day to day work because it's hardly ever relevant. Like I use "weak self" in closures because something something retain cycles but I don't really need to know the full reason most of the time.

    jamie_blumberg,
    @jamie_blumberg@hachyderm.io avatar

    @saagar @kyleve I think my brain just has certain topics it can't fully retain unless it can see those topics as currently relevant. So for instance I know not to force unwrap because of how that is a recipe for problems, and I know when to guard let vs if let and such because I do that all the time.

    And I actually did solve a nasty deallocation bug one time by taking the weak off of a weak self reference in a closure.

    But for some other stuff… ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    jamie_blumberg,
    @jamie_blumberg@hachyderm.io avatar

    Goddamnit @shantini you're completely right. The exact mechanics of how you prevent errors is secondary to the fact that you prevent them and help make it possible to find and fix them if they do occur.

    This is the first time since probably 2008 (for iPod touch 2nd gen, the good one) that I haven’t been a day one new Apple device person but you know what, I’m fine waiting. It isn’t even the money. I could buy it with cash no problem. But it’s the principle of not having a way to test it in advance and no clear use case that has me concerned. A friend did get one and I’ll try hers out on the 2nd and I might have FOMO, but like, I gotta be honest, I haven’t been sold on it yet.

    jamie_blumberg,
    @jamie_blumberg@hachyderm.io avatar

    @film_girl I think this is the logical, measured and smart position, which is why I ordered one earlier today. Because I’m an iOS developer, I currently have the means, and the only Apple platform that I've used (more or less) day 1 was the Apple Watch, and I even resisted that for a month or so.

    AKA the "eh, fuck it why not" justification.

    jamie_blumberg,
    @jamie_blumberg@hachyderm.io avatar

    @film_girl Oh, I wish I could expense this. I should have formed an LLC a while ago and buy it that way.

    But I'm definitely excited to share my thoughts once I've had a chance to play around with it.
