That's reason enough to make this week's thread the city on the Thames, and it's unique contribution to geography.

@opencage The City of London logo is also found on posts in deepest Surrey. These marked the boundary where a tax had to be paid on coal brought into London.

Welcome to another thread... a while back I asked for ideas and
@DiegoBeghin suggested something on AC versus DC electrification. So here goes!

HOW IT WORKS - AC and DC electrification

Trains can be supplied with either Alternating Current (AC) or Direct Current (DC) electricity. If you don't understand the difference, check out https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/alternating-current-ac-vs-direct-current-dc/all

@25kV Thanks for that, most interesting. I'd read somewhere that the reason for a 4th rail on London Underground was to reduce leakage current corroding the iron tunnel liners.

Do you have any insight into why some Swiss mountain railways use AC at 16⅔ Hz rather than 50 Hz, or why the Jungfrau Bahn is 3 phase?

Man why does it seem like every country has to elect their own right-wing nutjob to independently (re-)discover what a bad idea it is?

Any recommendations for a low cost UK company? Hosting two domains with associated low traffic web sites and IMAP email handling is all I need.

I'm used to foxes dumping half-chewed children's stuffed toys in my garden, but this morning was the first time the toy animal has been a fox.

Getting rid of stuff via is very satisfying, but people who say they'd like something but then ignore subsequent messages take some of the fun out of it.

Look at the two symbols in the middle of this piece of flexible plastic. What do they denote?

jim_easterbrook,
@jim_easterbrook@mstdn.social avatar

@andypiper I think they're "food grade" and "recyclable".

Well. "Open sesame" is actually a thing.

Just googled where sesame seeds come from (it never occurred to me to ask before) and found that they grow in pods that are hung upside down to ripen until they burst open and release their seeds. The treasure is revealed.

jim_easterbrook,
@jim_easterbrook@mstdn.social avatar

@helenczerski I thought "open sesame" was a reference to their laxative effect.

Imperial units are a pain all round, but I cannot even begin to describe how maddening “thousandths of an inch” are. OH LOOK.. AREN’T DECIMALS USEFUL? I suppose that some other weird subdivision of an inch would be worse, but really, if you can cope with thousandths of an inch, what’s so hard about a centimetre?

jim_easterbrook,
@jim_easterbrook@mstdn.social avatar

@helenczerski At least "thou" are amenable to mental arithmetic. Stuff like adding 7/16" to 11/64" does my head in.

Observation - the @BBCOpenSource Twitter handle hasn't posted in a long time, although it is still referenced on their website. Also, I don't use Twitter, so I can't message them on there. Are they on ? Anyone able to put me in touch with someone over on that org? I have something to report...
