Is the Fediverse for everyone?

jnv,
@jnv@mastodon.social avatar

@reiver If “fediverse” is a value-neutral concept as “email”, “web”, and “internet” then yes. It's, for better or worse, for everyone.

Hey folks! I'm looking for examples of elected officials and people running for office who have accounts on the fediverse.

Know of one? Please let me know! Boosts appreciated :boost_requested:

jnv,
@jnv@mastodon.social avatar

@josh I follow @marcel_kolaja, current member of the EU Parliament running for reelection for the Czech Pirate Party. (I guess you'll find many more officials on the fediverse for Pirate Parties across the Europe.)

jnv,
@jnv@mastodon.social avatar

@bnut @josh After wrapping up the pilot, the new instance is now officially under EU Commision's management: https://ec.social-network.europa.eu/@EUCommission/112455456338250699
(Wouldn't hurt to link there from that announcement though.)

Those of you who use - should I be using the Android app Element, or Element X?

I just want text based comms in the channel. I'm not fussed about anything else.

The Element website recommends Element. But their GitHub seems to recommend Element X. And, frankly, I don't understand why I'd want one over the other.

jnv,
@jnv@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent I've started using Element X recently. The UI feels much smoother and more “native”. What's missing for me so far is threads support (it displays threaded conversations as replies so it's quite messy; it can reply to a thread, but can't start a new thread).

This is what Twitter / X does when I try to access it on my mobile browser. It just forever redirects between two URLs.

I know I could probably fix this by deleting my cookies but, honestly, I sort of like Twitter this way? The page started doing the infinite loop a few days ago, and it's still doing it now (I just checked).

Twitter mobile forever redirecting and loading.

@filiph this is the best way to experience Xitter, tbh

While researching the history, I stumbled upon the federated SNS timeline: https://im.youronly.one/techmagus/kb/ddfon/federated-social-network-timeline-2022346/ by @youronlyone

Quite comprehensive resource! I will look into adding The Appleseed Project, One Social Web, and Tent.

Look at it, I still have a t-shirt from @webexpo 2013. It's kinda worn, but it lasted much longer than other conference merch (same can be said about those events). Little did I know I'd speak there 11 years later.

Back in 1996 Netscape had a competing proposal to CSS called “JavaScript-Based Style Sheets” or (JSSS): https://www.w3.org/submissions/1996/1/WD-jsss-960822
JSX, CSS-in-JS, we've been there already.

I finally figured out why #AIPin by #Humane (https://hu.ma.ne/aipin) feels vaguely familiar.

Back in 2009 there was a TED talk and a demo of “SixthSense” wearable device with a built-in projector: https://www.ted.com/talks/pattie_maes_pranav_mistry_meet_the_sixthsense_interaction

What's the best place to host a single page client-side app in 2023 on one's own domain with SSL?

Is the answer still “GitHub Pages”, or is there something better?

jnv,
@jnv@mastodon.social avatar

@evan Not sure if the best but Cloudflare Pages are also a free option with HTTPS baked-in.
…buut if you'd prefer something less big tech-y, both Codeberg and sr.ht provide pages hosting (see: https://docs.codeberg.org/codeberg-pages/ & https://srht.site/ )

Twitter paying out $5 million to a few selected “creators” is just Musk handing out giant teddy bears to suckers in a rigged game of peach-basket. As Cory Doctorow puts it in @pluralistic:
“No one wins a giant teddy bear unless the carny wants them to win it. Why did the carny let the sucker win the giant teddy bear? So that he'd carry it around all day, convincing other suckers to put down five bucks for their chance to win one.” https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/#hey-guys

It still seems weird to me that Prettier will turn <br> into <br />.

The / is there from XHTML - a standard that became redundant in the late 2000s.

The space before the / is there for compatibility with Netscape Navigator 4 - an engine that was dropped in the late 90s.

jnv,
@jnv@mastodon.social avatar

@jaffathecake Maybe it's the same logic they use for formatting JSX where it is required?

jnv, to random
@jnv@mastodon.social avatar

Just to get this straight. Musk:

  1. Destroyed the system of verified accounts by making the checkmark a paid perk
  2. Labeled NPR, PBS, CBC, and BBC as “government-funded media” which caused to some of them to leave Twitter
  3. After the backlash removed the labels from all media outlets including those which obviously spread government propaganda like RT and China Xinhua News.

That's pretty rapid unscheduled disassembly of any remaining trust in the platform. https://www.theverge.com/2023/4/21/23692449/elon-musk-twitter-government-funded-media-labels-removed

you don't need CSS to enable dark mode support, just this tag: &lt;meta name="color-scheme" content="dark light"&gt;

So I enabled it on my blog (https://www.bitoff.org/) and removed syntax highlighting in the process. That's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

Thanks to @tdarb for tip! https://bt.ht/html-dark-mode
