I’m off to the Melbourne Royal Show today. What started 175 years as a way for rural folk to gather and show off what they produced to city folk has grown into an unhinged extravaganza that’s parts theme park, petting zoo, food fair, agricultural trade expo, music festival, craft show and market for products usually only found on infomercials. Despite it being kind of expensive and sometimes tacky I love it because it’s such a feverdream of an event.

I’ll be posting the weird and wonderful things I find in this thread. To start with, here’s some well behaved cows

Ideally public restroom mirrors shouldn’t run windows

Love waking up to find out six hours ago someone edited a toot I’d boosted to say something wildly different and kinda problematic. There should be a limit to how much you can edit toots that have been boosted. Fix a typo? Absolutely. Totally change the content? No

At a wildlife park that has cassowary encounters as an upgrade option. This seems inadvisable. I’ll pass, I do not wish to encounter the last survivor of the dinosaurs

I'm off to for a week soon which I'm super excited about. I lived there for half a year a long time ago so know all the major things to do but would love to hear about anything great that's new in the last 5 years or obscure enough I might have missed in the past

Wish I could have been in the meeting where this concept was signed off on

What an under-appreciated privilege we Australians have that our question when picking where to vote tomorrow can be which or the half dozen nearby polling places will be selling the best food, not where am I least at risk of violent intimidation or queuing for 6 hours only to have my right to vote denied.

Recently got an Apple Watch. Are there any apps for those that do particularly cool/useful things?

I despise online stores that make you put in all your personal details before they'll tell you how much the shipping costs. I shouldn't have to get my details on yet another database only to find out the exorbitant shipping fee makes the item too expensive

Genuinely surprised someone hasn’t tapped into millennial nostalgia by reopening sizzler restaurants. The cheese bread was a magical experience

I suspect that when cultural historians a hundred or so years from now look back on the present day one of the things that will baffle them is the incessant insistence that famous and even regular people be constantly speaking up and having takes about issues entirely outside their expertise

I know I’m getting old and grumpy, but I’m irritated that multiple songs in the top 5 are songs from overseas artists that picked up a lot of popularity from being used in tiktok. It sucks this country doesn’t back our local artists

there would be a great book concept to be had in charting the cultural history of Australian sausage sizzles (Bunnings, elections, scout groups ect). Someone more motivated than me please write it

Even as a regular donor to foodbanks, maddening to see Woolworths ask for donations to a foodbank at the self service checkouts when part of the reason people need foodbanks is Woolworths group raised their prices so much during a cost of living crisis they made a 1.72 billion dollar profit last year

My workplace loves getting people to talk about how they're feeling in staff meetings so I've taken advantage of this to make the discussion in terms of my sister's moody kitty Winston. Perhaps Winston might help you interpret your moods too

It’s kinda adorable that small packs of cookers are still having little marches through the city. They’ve been at it 3 years and still haven’t found more interesting hobbies. There’s barely enough of them to push their weirdly large portable PA system in front of trams

Dogs aren’t usually allowed in public pools for health reasons but on the last day before they close for the season a pool near me invites all the local dogs for a swim. It’s the happiest thing imaginable

A happy looking brown corgi in a green life jacket stands on the edge of a pool
Two large wet black dogs at the edge of a pool
An orange and cream chow chow dog lies in a shallow pool
