People of Mastodon!

I'm researching the growth of ebikes ...

... in cities around the US

I've talked to many people who love them!

But also want to include the perspective of folks who have concerns ...

... i.e. about the speed and weight of ebikes in accidents with pedestrians or other cyclists, and the like

If anyone has thoughts they wanna share, ping me! I'm all ears: clive@clivethompson.net

Pass this along if you know anyone else with perspective they want to share

#fedibikes

I follow COVID scientists here on Mastodon. I've seen them post links to studies showing waning effectiveness of COVID vaccines after 6 months.

I received the updated booster last October and want to get boosted again prior to some planned travel in July. (Air travel to the MAGA anti-vax cesspool known as Florida)

I have contacted three pharmacies in my area.

One has no COVID vaccines at all and said they won't receive any until fall.

The other two say they will not vaccinate me because they must follow US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines stating that only people 65 years and older should receive boosters at this time.

They won't vaccinate me even if I am willing to pay out of pocket.

Both say I must get a recommendation from my health care provider before they will even consider it.

Less than 20% of people in my state are up to date on their COVID vaccines. For those of us who want to follow the science and not some arbitrary age limitation, why not let us get vaccinated?

johne,
@johne@denvr.social avatar

@shansterable you just need to say youโ€™re immunocompromised. They donโ€™t need proof. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/recommendations/immuno.html

@dancast @shansterable I believe this is the same policy as before.

I love getting almost squished by a pickup truck driver who blocked the crosswalk. I tried meeting his ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ as I crossed in front of him. He started to pull forward. As I cleared the truck I yelled. At first he was apologetic for having been looking the other way. A few seconds later he yelled that I was โ€œdriving on the wrong side of the road.โ€ So many things wrong with that. First of all, I was on the sidewalk. I only did that because a detour for road construction sent me that way.

johne,
@johne@denvr.social avatar

Also sidewalk riding for adults is legal in Colorado outside of Denver. Somehow my blood pressure is actually a tad low now thatIโ€™m at my doctor appointment.

johne,
@johne@denvr.social avatar

On my way back Iโ€™m going to ride through the construction zone as thats far safer.

I'm trying to test thermal shutdown on an IC: if it gets hot enough, does its thermal regulation work? It has: an ADC measuring die temp via bandgap, a hardware bandgap that cuts function at a specific temperature, and a write register that you can set a value into so when it exceeds that value it shuts down. The important one, the hardware that should cut the power section, is way off. It hasn't tripped at 200C.
So today I talked to a running chip through liquid solder. That's a first.

@smellsofbikes heat gun? thats how i once tried to reproduce field failures of a product that kept letting its smoke out. never could reproduce. The conditions were way over whatever they experienced in the field.

Finally got my ADHD meds!

Walked in the grocery store and instantly

โœจ meltdown โœจ

Zero cashiers. Only self-checkout. My hands are shaking a lot from the heat and struggled to bag my small amount of groceries. Kept dropping everything.

Going in grocery stores: zero stars, do not recommend ๐Ÿ‘Ž

@ashleyspencer That happened to me at a Home Depot. I walked up to the three employees overseeing the self checkouts and said, "I'm sorry, but I don't work here."

@ashleyspencer None of it is your responsibility. Heck I felt cheated that I had to put my credit card in the machine. That used to be the job of the workers too.

This research shows that aptitude for learning foreign languages is a stronger predictor of learning to program than basic maths knowledge.

"These results provide a novel framework for understanding programming aptitude, suggesting that the importance of numeracy may be overestimated in modern programming education environments."

Fixing the tire and oiling the chainโ€ฆ and gears do I need special oil?

johne,

@EVDHmn If you want to go down a rabbit hole: https://zerofrictioncycling.com.au/ tldr; Assuming the chain hasnโ€™t worn too much, almost any โ€œwetโ€ lube from a bike shop should be fine. Muckoff products should be avoided. If you want the longest life, waxing a new striped chain is they way to go, but the most complicated.

I've been maintaining the sprinkler system our home came with for over 20 years. Last night I tried to remove an old sprinkler that sits too low. Normally I can use long hose pliers to unscrew the female thread nipple that usually stays in the ground. Not this time. I only got out broken pieces. Time to get really dirty.
