Star Wars Day is also Comic Book Day? Getting down my tiny collection to see what I have so I don’t double buy almost covered me in dust bunnies. Also, as I wear a star wars shirt of some sort about once a week, I decided I should put on a star trek red shirt, but I don’t own one. I guess The Expanse will have to do.

I have just watched the 1st episode of A Kind of Spark thanks to @PetitPas

It’s a Irish British American Canadian series. In Canada I’m watching it on CBC Gem, in the UK it seems to be on the CBBC channel, for the others countries I don’t know.

I like it because the 3 autistic sisters are played by autistic actors, use of the words autistic, masking, meltdown. etc. Shows sensory overload, etc., ignorance and bias.

To watch it in Canada https://gem.cbc.ca/a-kind-of-spark

Claire quote of the day:

"I'm like a horse girl but for electronics"

Prompted by troubleshooting yet another friends ancient BT device.

I think my non-technical background does give me an edge here, as it often does. My first instinct is never multimeter. A lot of my (hubris-filled electronics-'splaining guy) friends get tripped up going there first with any electronics.

I have just always had (and gotten a lot more confident in) my powerful troubleshooting electronics ✨whispering✨ 🤫🤌

I told y'all, cops don't do what you think they do.🤷🏿‍♂️

Black folk know this from lived experience. Some white folk only learn this when they go to report a theft or sexual assault and find out that the $11B/year NYPD are not equipped to handle that.

Still waiting for the part we need to fix our water heater to arrive.... We paid extra for it to be delivered yesterday and it is not here yet.... 😡

johne,
@johne@denvr.social avatar

@dramypsyd OMG the handle for the filter housing on our heat pump dryer broke after a few months. Machine is still totally usuable. Just annoying. A technician came out. I showed him the part on my front porch, he placed an order. Nothing showed up. I called and they said he didnt place the order. I was watching him key in the order on a laptop. Don’t lie to me. CSR person insisted and placed another order. Still nothing. Call again. Is back ordered. When finally arrives, I get two.

I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to hear this as someone who’s had to deal with the opposite: “You don’t work on a ticket unless I tell you” Given that wasn’t the first complaint I’ve had about that PM, I don’t understand why she hasn’t been fired yet.

Defending the Camp

A Report from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Gaza Solidarity Encampment

https://crimethinc.com/UIUC

All around the United States and now in Canada, Australia, and several European cities, students have established encampments protesting the bloodshed taking place in Gaza. Over the past few days, more than a thousand people have been arrested in police raids targeting these encampments. Yet despite the high-profile assaults on Columbia University and other occupations, many encampments have managed to stand their ground, even in the face of repeated police attacks. In this report, participants in the Gaza solidarity protest encampment at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign recount their experiences learning to hold their ground.

Protesters equipped with multicolored umbrellas line up to defend the encampment at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Open source raspberry pi based sprinkler controller is running. I still have to print a housing to mount it. Right now, it's hanging from the cable running out to the solenoids in our under stair closet. No AI, no cloud service selling my data. It's wonderful so far.

johne,
@johne@denvr.social avatar

The '80s controller with chiclet keys that stopped working may have just needed new AA batteries but I ask, why if this thing gets 24VAC, couldn't it have been powered by that? The batteries I had in there were from back when ToysRus still existed, but I needed an excuse to replace this and while this is a slim excuse, an excuse it is.

The middle position of the kitchen faucet lever didn’t turn it off. One had to hunt to turn it fully off. The only place that had a 1-5/16” socket in stock was the Napa warehouse in Commerce City. I also managed to drop the old cartridge and it exploded, thus revealing the failure. Where there should have been a plastic ring around the base of the lever, some of it had turned to white gooey mush. The movement of the ceramic plate against the metal base was interesting. They glide like on ice.

johne,
@johne@denvr.social avatar

And yes, I had to use a 3/8” plus a 1/4” adapter, as my 1/4” drive torque wrench is the only one that goes low enough.

johne,
@johne@denvr.social avatar

Ha ha! I’m so used to having to hint for the turn off point. It was also nice to be able to better clean gunk from between spaces on this.
