More on the myths today. A popular Instagram account, called Cafeholic101 posted an infographic claiming a shot of espresso has only 27mg of caffeine.

I guess if it's in an infographic, it's gotta be true, right? :eyeroll: Sadly, this post has thousands of likes; another example of influencers providing false info.

Because it's utterly untrue. Well maybe the 5g coffee amounts in a nespresso pod, if brewed at very low temperatures, might be under 30mg in the cup.

Real espresso? A full double from 18.5g coffee will give 100-135mg caffeine, in the cup.

@coffeegeek @espresso @coffee I get very confused about my ability to down a double Americano and then go lie down for a nap (like now) or an hour before bed. Feels like my lack of reaction to is depriving me of half the experience!

@MexicanYenta @espresso @coffee @coffeegeek Interesting! I don't think I have any ADHD symptoms so probably not in my case. Suspect either genetics or just generally running major sleep deficit :)

@RangerRick @coffeegeek @espresso @coffee
caffeine = "Adderall Lite" haha.
I'm great at all-nighters... just need a nap first - and a last minute deadline!!
Red Bull though has always worked for me. I typically avoid but used to keep a can in the car for "medicinal purposes". Alertness was so instantaneous though, I suspect reaction was psychosomatic - but hey... if it works, it works!

This is a really good setup for home and . For a roughly $600 package (if you find them on sale), the Bambino Plus espresso machine is a wunderkind, and the Smart Grinder Pro is on CoffeeGeek's "Very Recommended" list, and a true all around multipurpose grinder for all your home coffee needs.

Smart Grinder Pro review coming very soon on CoffeeGeek.

Or very similarly...

The Opus only arrived this morning so can't be objective yet.
One factor in choice of the Opus over others was fitting it under the shelf :)

@coffeegeek

Fun! Yeah, scale looks lovely but also $$$$!

Agree re Breville being a "throw it away" company - reluctant to buy too much from them if there's an equiv alternative, but your SGP review is amazing. The smarts seem similar to the Kitchenaid which looks lovely but also so tall (plus we're using 2 diff coffees here so hoppers don't work)

Justifiable comments on Fellow - biggest negative for me was Kickstarter origins - pretty much everything I've got from KS has been kinda janky :)

jonjennings,
@jonjennings@newwest.social avatar

Follow-up on the Fellow Opus grinder now I've had it a couple of weeks:
It's quiet and the grind seems consistent. The de-ionizer works fabulously.
However I'm not convinced it's going as fine as expected (need a coffee friend to come help me dial in my doses) and, most significantly, I lose up to 3g out of a 19g dose inside it unless I thwack it on the head when it finishes.
// @coffeegeek

An empty coffee cup sits on a scale showing 0.0g. A hand moves the cup to under the grinder behind it, thwacks the grinder on the top a couple of times. Coffee falls out of the grinder into the cup. The hand then takes the cup and puts it back on the scale. The cup, now with coffee in the bottom, registers 3.0g

The ferry--1km away from our house--is VERY ANGRY AT BOATS right now.

So much honking. And it's foggy, so also regular honking.

Mostly it's the water taxi, but so many people think the ferry is predictable and race in front of it. One time I saw it brake HARD, barely missing a powerboat whose captain was totally oblivious.

Sweet merciful Poseidon people, don't play chicken with a 1500tn boat maybe??

For non-sailors: one honk means "hey," five fast honks means: "get out of the way, asshole."

jonjennings,
@jonjennings@newwest.social avatar

@reneestephen
I know 1 or 2 honks are "I'm turning/passing to port/starboard" - except, rather importantly, I can never remember which is which lol.

I remember 5 as being rather politely termed something like "your intentions are unclear" - the restraint is almost palpable... everybody knows it really means "what the hell are you doing?!"

The Isle of Wight ferries in the Solent were famous for collecting yachts - the waters there are solid in boats and the ferries don't hang around.

"Manoeuvre" is officially my least favourite word to spell. (The American spelling ain't too bad, the Canadian spelling is atrocious).

Oh wait, it gets worse: "manoeuvrable"

aaaaggghhhh

jonjennings,
@jonjennings@newwest.social avatar

@sundogplanets I love how spelling exists in an inconsistent world with one foot in English English and the other in American.
The sign outside that reads "Tire Centre" is my favourite example.

Feeling emotionally bruised - trying to figure out why the loss of Lahaina has hit me so hard: https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/living-through-mauis-unimaginable-wildfires

I realized it’s the first place where I have direct lived experience that has been demolished as a consequence of our poor environmental stewardship.

Lots more well-loved places are going to go, lots more people are going to be feeling these feelings.

At what point do we wake up and say stop?

jonjennings,
@jonjennings@newwest.social avatar

@timbray Previously I'd felt it would take the US experiencing NEW "foreign" disasters to get them to take action, eg not just more tornados etc but previously unheard of stuff.
This year they've had a taste of what we've been getting with >400 air quality and towns burning down... but I don't get the feeling anything's going to change.
I guess Covid should have taught me not to expect... they could politicize a paper bag.

redact (https://redact.dev/) - was cleaning up my old reddit & twitter timelines. No sense leaving that stuff behind for them.

Mission Center looks very pretty, certainly prettier than top/htop/glances/s-tui 🤣 - maybe a little too modelled on the Win equivalent but will take it for a spin.

jonjennings,
@jonjennings@newwest.social avatar

@omglinux Rather than changing the default at all, just adding the config panel they talk about would be 100% sufficient. Or even just letting us delete the ones we don't use

@omglinux
Yep - I did read the article and click through to see that (thanks!)

I guess it's reasonable to do a top-to-bottom makeover while that code's open but I'd have settled just for the simple inline remove option.
( And that you want Video and not Documents while I want Documents and not Video shows the value of customization :) )

Hi Thunderbird family, we have just a bit of housekeeping and cleanup to do before we release version 115, so we're going to hold off until tomorrow (Tuesday) to press the launch button.

Thank you so much for your patience. We know it's been a long wait. We just want to ensure the smoothest launch possible!

@thunderbird Congrats on the new logo.
It's hard to replace a well-established & much-loved logo with something that's not just a minor makeover but the new logo is every bit, if not better, than the old one - love it!

Technical stuff aside, a major reason why Flatpak does not get the hate Snap does is because users don't resent it.

There are 2 things people hate: the way things are, and change.

Ubuntu put Snaps on users desktops without asking if they wanted them. They just did it, then closed off ways to opt-out/avoid them (Cf. Firefox).

Forced change fosters resentment.

No distro made Flatpaks default/required/opt-out. Users had time to come to the tech and adopt it on their own terms/needs.

Just IMO.

jonjennings,
@jonjennings@newwest.social avatar

@omgubuntu
Open source for me has always been about choice.
When I first moved from Windows Vista to Ubuntu 6.06 it freaked me out that there were now 5 different ways to do anything, different commands that overlapped.
Over time I grew to love not being told what to do or locked into any one tool.
Ubuntu's forcing of snaps on everybody went totally against that and is why I left for Debian.

"There are 2 things people hate: the way things are, and change." <--- 🤣

Google just emailed me to let me know that "Album Archive" is going away and my data will be deleted in a month.

Album Archive is apparently the dumping ground for images that were in other products Google has already killed, such as Google+ and Hangouts.

They're killing the place where images from killed products went. It's just beyond parody, incredible.
