@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com

Got two Turing tables and some microcode.

I work on back-end server-y type stuff at a place that keeps rockin' the free web. I like rust, python, and horrible puns (not necessarily in that order).

I tend to be nice for selfish reasons (I don't like hanging out with jerks).

I think I found a way to get the folk on NextDoor to understand the minimum wage thing.

The last time the minimum wage was set was 1997. At the time, the average Social Security payout was $774 a month.

(It's currently $1696)

So, that extra $922 is just waste you don't need,, right, Gran'pa?

Shout out to the Eastern European tourist who was so excited to have his picture taken with me! Shout out to his mortified friends, who clearly knew that I wasn't the celebrity that their friend thought I was, but could not convince him of this, no matter how hard they tried!

Glad that I could stand in for you and make the day special! I hope you don't post our picture to social media though, because then everyone will know that I am not whoever you thought I was! So let's keep this between us!

I wonder what could have been the cause?

For folk that are not in the path of Totality (or under cloud cover, or are stuck inside, or...), friendly reminder that NASA is doing a live view party:

Last time, the stream was really good, and I expect it'll be better this time around.

Reading @mekkaokereke's ongoing thread about the importance of onboarding new teammates, thinking about the three different times I was sent to get an engineering onboarding program off the ground at my last job, with a budget of zero dollars and no outcomes that ever laddered up to anywhere.

jrconlin,
@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com avatar

@mhoye @mekkaokereke

Can I say that the onboarding / mentoring stuff I do is partly for my own evil reasons?

The sooner I can get someone up-to-speed the sooner I can foist off some of my backlog onto them. I also build up stronger professional bonds with those individuals.

Likewise, mentoring is valuable to me to build up a network of professional contacts that I can use even outside of my current employer.

Frequently in tech, the bridges you build are worth more than the code you write.

jrconlin,
@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com avatar

@CubeThoughts @mhoye @mekkaokereke

One of the things I rail against is that tech has a really horrible history around mentoring. Not just "here's how to do X", but "here's how to not fall into the bear traps."

Too many orgs have a "sink or swim" approach, that is dumb for so many, macho reasons, and it leads to devs never pushing back on bad ideas because of imposter syndrome and fear.

I'm tired of the loud assholes getting all the glory and attention. They don't deserve it.

Writing a thread on onboarding here, because I don't want to write it in the other place.

Context:
Good engineer onboarding is DEI. Teams that have great onboarding, tend to be more diverse and inclusive. Teams that have poor onboarding, tend to be more homogeneous and less diverse.

That's because poor onboarding makes life harder for junior employees and remote employees. Underrepresented groups benefit disproportionately from remote work options. Junior employees are a more diverse group.

jrconlin,
@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com avatar

@mekkaokereke

heh, kinda happy that the onboarding template looks an awful lot like this.

I cleaned it up for public use. Not sure if it actually is useful, but yeah, making things easier for anyone to onboard is A HUGE WIN.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hWEgOYrH07-t_w-hPOYjEp-ooj1mxogv/view?usp=sharing

(Don't make new folk suffer like you did. They don't need to earn anything. You hired them to help free up your work.)

jrconlin,
@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com avatar

@mekkaokereke

One other thing we've noticed that makes a huge difference, having a deliberate "Onboarding buddy" someone that the new hire can ask questions. Even better if they're not a manager (less concern about looking dumb).

Not knowing who to ask can be paralyzing for some. Having someone senior they can ask and know they're not bothering, removes lots of barriers. Plus, it's good experience for the senior person.

Right, so if you, like me, just want to muck around with the audio on your linux machine and:

・Have pipewire installed
・Don't want to read 200 pages of obtuse documentation
・Keep reading all these docs about Jack

You want to install qpwgraph.
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/rncbc/qpwgraph

It lets you graphically patch inputs and outputs between programs and devices.

(Also, zoom does stupid overrides which will make some of this hard to do, but you can work around them.)

You're welcome.

FWIW, Pretty much stopped using Youtube Music as my streaming service, mostly because I like to listen to more than an hour and a half of music at any given time.

Instead, bought a bunch of music off of Bandcamp and now have around 26+ hours of music I can listen to off my phone or desktop.

Not unsurprisingly, it works great.

Thanks Google, for giving me the incentive to find something better.

The sad and hilarious thing is that computer nerds already control the means of production they're just not doing anything with it other than what they're told.

Yeah, fun fact: One of the original things that unions traditionally did was enable communication between folk outside of corporate control.

Too bad that tech never gave folk a way to do that.

Oh, wait...

jrconlin, to random
@jrconlin@soc.jrconlin.com avatar

Wait, I'm confused.

I know a bunch of Christians demand that We Must Respect Christmas and Ensure It Remains Holy.

Haven't heard a goddam word out of them about Easter.

You know, the Holy Day that is actually really important to their faith.

Guess it just isn't as commercially viable for them to demand fealty.

(Or maybe they don't like answering questions about bunnies, eggs, and why it's named after a Germanic goddess.)

Friendly PSA:

When a loved one passes leaving you the role of Executor of the estate, and you're going through who to notify about the recent death,

TELL THE BANK LAST!

They will freeze the account immediately upon hearing of the death and the only way to unfreeze it is to go through probate, which will take at least a month.

This is really important for things like online bill payments for utilities, mortgages, etc.

A star will be born in the coming months! Not quite, but a star in the T Coronae Borealis binary system (T CrB) will explode as a nova between Feb and Sept and become visible to the naked eye.

How do astronomers know? It is because this is a “recurrent nova”, one that grows and erupts every ~80 years. It is known to have erupted in 1217, 1787, 1866 and 1946.

After explosion, it will be visible to the unaided eye for several days and about a week with binoculars.

Huh, so I just installed Audacious <https://audacious-media-player.org/> on my various computers to play all the music I've downloaded, ripped, and otherwise acquired and gotta admit, it's rather nice.

No right wing podcasters getting my money.
No union busting.
No insisting that I'm listening wrong or have to use their crappy app to load music.

It's rather delightful.

For mobile, I've been bouncing between Foobar2000, and PowerAmp. I previously bought a full license for PowerAmp, and Foobar2000 feels super old-school.

May try others if someone has suggestions.

jrconlin,

@davepolaschek

I wouldn’t mind that for me, except Apple is in the “You are listening to music wrong, and you have to use our crappy app” camp.

The pains of not being deep in the Apple ecosystem, I guess.
