Happy Monday!

I was going to move on to new patterns today, but I really wanted to try this spring green in my calming floral pattern.

I also started a bigger version, on watercolor paper, but its not done yet.

As usual, I'll be posting this week's drawings for my supporters on Ko-fi and Patreon:

One of the things I love about sticky-notes is that they don't damage anything they're stuck to. So, I could maybe stick one to the edge of a mirror in the ladies room of a restaurant. And it wouldn't damage anything.

If you'd like a few of these sticky-notes, you can sign up for my project and mention 'Sticky Notes' in the 'comment' field.

This way, I can send you these and you can help with my project as well,

Part of getting the new community instance (datavis.social) up and running was deciding on my profile header. I went with an IterativeArt piece I created with code and the text "F*ck Cancer".

I started working on this piece in the days after my diagnosis but before going in for surgery. Even with my frustrations and scary emotions about Cancer, that I was feeling at the time, I still wanted to make the piece beautiful. As usual :)

It's that time again...I gotta get to work on my Maker Faire and SF Zine Festival applications, and cross my fingers that they accept me.

Hey vis.social folks!

An update on the wave of spam-mentions: I've gone through the tier5 and tier3 domains on https://github.com/Mastodon-DE/blocklists/blob/main/spam/2024-02-15/2024-02-15-spam-mute-list.md

I've added Limits to any that we didn't already have Limited or Suspended...that's about half of the list.

Please continue to report new spam, so that we can deal with them and help keep this a better space for all of us.

Today's prompt is "abstract", so it seems like the perfect day to share this Chemistry inspired piece. A very abstract representation of Chemistry based particle system.

This piece came out of finding my artistic voice.

I was surprised at how few people I spoke with at the Maker Faire, today, had even heard of Mastodon.

Why did it come up? They'd ask if I was on some platform where they could follow me, and I'd reply that I'm mainly on Mastodon now. And they didn't know what it was.

I'm curious to see if it's different the next two days

Really great article on CWs, and how and why to use them.

Hey vis.social folks!

Our database will be migrated to a new server this Saturday at 9:30am UTC.

This will cause a down-time on vis.social for about 2 hours.

The upside is that this migration should improve our database performance.

Thank you for your patience.

There's so much chatter about Threads today. I guess I should mention that we've had threads.net proactively blocked for months already.

We'll keep an eye on things, but I don't see us lifting the block until next year, at the earliest.

  1. We don't know how much of a server load it will add, and thus increase our expenses.

  2. Moderation is a big concern. We do not have the resources to deal with a new unmoderated instance right now.

It's not unusual for me to come across my own work on Pinterest, but posted by someone who seems to have stolen it. Often, they're selling it.

But tonight I ran into multiple instances of it.

Frustrating, is the nicest thing I can say about it.

It would be nice if Pinterest would auto-fill the contact info when I'm signed in, to make it easier and faster to send in the reports and request for take-down.

I'm not sure what's going on with the game, but there are already helicopters circling over my neighborhood.

And there are people down the street screaming.

Hey vis.social folks!

You may have heard about the possible bluesky-bridging to mastodon.

We are currently looking into how it might work or impact our server (and server costs). Also, considering what looks like an un-ethical non-consensual opt-out-only approach.

Our moderation team is looking into it, and working to learn more.

The wave we're dealing with right now seems to be mentioning folks on our instance.

Please report, and we will work as fast as we can.

I sure wish I could see this amazing aurora, but the fog is rolling in over Twin Peaks, and it's still unlikely that it will be active by the time it's dark here? It's not likely.

I'll still go outside, just in case, after dark tonight.

If you follow me here, you might know my daily drawings.

But my roots are in Science Visualization and SciCom.

At heart, I am a Scientist first.

I'm also kind of weird, in that I have two undergraduate degrees. The first in Biological Anthropology and the Second in Biology (with an emphasis in genetics and biochemistry).

I also got a Masters in Computer Science, mid-career, just because I wanted to get better at the mathematics of Data Structures and Algorithms.

So, I'm wondering who made the mistake of taking down the slow street markers/barriers on Sanchez St today?

Sanchez is a "Slow Street", and there's usually tons of kids on bikes and playing on the weekends.

I hope nobody was hurt.

They seem to be putting the markers and barriers again, at night.

Working through my own shock and fear around my cancer diagnosis.

But the hospital I've been spending time at the last two weeks?

It's also a Children's Hospital.

Seeing these little kids. And their parents?

It breaks my heart.

What are the current indie-bookstore options for online ordering these days?

That whole "explain it as if to your mother", or "to a housewife" bit?

It's never been acceptable.

Brilliant women who have done brilliant work have been forced into "housewife" roles for ages.

Julia Child was just one of the most famous ones, in recent history.

Thankfully, for all of us, she found a path that society accepted and embraced.

Working on a little experiment, with some of the prints I started from one of this year's challenges.

I've been meaning to start these for ages, but didn't have the energy until now.

Oh, this one is hard to describe. On top of one of my generative art prints, with lots of blobby shapes, I've embroidered chain stitches along the edges of one of the blobby shapes.

This is an experiment and demonstration that a CW can be added to single post in a thread.

In this post, I'm not using a CW, but am going to add one to a reply to this.

I'm just so happy to be alive, and that I might actually be Cancer free. Yeah, yeah, more tests before it's sure....but I might actually be cancer free now!

So, if I'm even more socially awkward than usual, please forgive me...and celebrate with me!

Even if it turns out I might actually need Chemo....I'm gonna focus on the recovery I'm in now.
