I feel like all that time I’ve been practicing shading is starting to pay off.

Sitting atop a fractal surface of black holes, Tribert tries to make Adenine, one of the molecules in DNA, but he didn’t get it quite right, probably because he got distracted by the cats. Maybe next time, Tribert.

https://VisPubs.com now includes visualization papers from CHI!

To determine if a paper is a "visualization" paper I check if the title or abstract contains at least one visualization keyword. 726 of the ~10k CHI papers are now on the site!

Amazon has, for some reason, changed the release date for the Lurking paperback from Feb 21, 2021 to....March 7, 7431
does this mean it plans to hold any orders for over SEVEN THOUSAND years as preorders — probably!!!

anyway, please consider picking up a copy from Bookshop dot org or your local independent bookseller https://bookshop.org/p/books/lurking-how-a-person-became-a-user-joanne-mcneil/10354946

I'm greatly enjoying the latest version of the Old Maps Online website. It has a very smooth time scrubber where you can see political borders change through time, and then browse georeferenced historical maps from map libraries like the David Rumsey collection.

https://www.oldmapsonline.org/

And just the interactive map without the historical scans is available at TimeMap.org

Hey vis.social and other visualisation peeps.

If I'm getting into visuals and design and stuff, where would I go to find new cool things to learn?

I like stuff about the how's and why and philosophy and stuff, and like a good discussion of why stuff works.

Also - Here's visual about trust that goes with something I wrote.

re: “true solo devs don’t exist. nobody does all aspects of gamedev…”
yes they do. i do! imo i wish limited understanding of a space wouldn’t be generalized to erase other’s doing that thing.
there’s an aspect of looking down at solo dev that’s disempowering or gatekeeping too… 1/3

@alienmelon@mastodon.social avatar

let’s not convince people that gamedev is a complicated thing where u need a big education, lots of resources, or access to professionals in order to make a game. the heart of indie development is to have the audacity to just go do it (without other’s telling u it’s not possible) 3/3

Here, were at para.chi.paris but the paper was part of the fantastic Visualization literacy workshop at Chi this year. https://visualization-literacy.github.io/CHI2024/

So my 12 year old kid loves to death: machines, tracks, landscapes, everything. Unfortunately, this is a hobby dominated by grumpy old men, some of whom don't react too cool towards a rainbow family. Are there any familys out there with ? , Germany, wherever? I am thinking exchange of photos or small films, maybe sending stuff to and fro, meetings in Germany at some point. German, English works. Neurodivergent kids/parents welcome.

Just believing that an AI is helping boosts your performance
https://www.aalto.fi/en/news/just-believing-that-an-ai-is-helping-boosts-your-performance

Researchers discover an AI placebo effect where task performance improves when people believe an AI helps them.

"The results also pose a significant challenge for research on HCI, since expectations would influence the outcome unless placebo control studies were used.

‘These results suggest that many studies in the field may have been skewed in favor of AI systems,’ concludes Welsch."

professors are facing the same challenges we see at the secondary level: students who struggle with , writing, and completing homework. It explores the reasons behind these trends, dives into relevant research, and showcases how some professors are adapting their teaching methods in response.

If you'd like to explore my Patreon, which includes over 70 hours of writing classes, I've just opened up a 7-day free trial. Here are a few testimonials from current supporters. https://www.patreon.com/maryrobinette

"Joining Mary Robinette's Patreon was one of the best choices that I have made for my writing. At the end of 2023, I had stalled out on finishing the fourth draft of my novel. I was having a hard time finding time for myself that I could use for writing, and I was starting to believe that maybe I just couldn't be a writer. After joining the 'Make Me Write' level, I have added an additional 20k words in just under two months and am on track to finish this project this year. Mary Robinette is kind, thoughtful and helped me understand the challenges I was facing are normal things that all writers deal with. If you want to make your writing a more meaningful part of your life, I highly recommend joining Mary Robinette's Patreon." -JJS
"I joined Mary Robinette's Patreon to accelerate my growth as a writer. I felt really stuck and kept getting the same feedback on my stories: 'Interesting premise, strong writing, but it's not quite a story.' I took a lot of classes, read a lot of craft books, but couldn't get past that point. Since joining Mary Robinette's Patreon, my writing skills have taken off. I'm more able to diagnose story problems, to get stories across the finish line, and to create stories out of thin air. It's AWESOME. My favorite part is the Short Story Cohort, but I'm also a big fan of Make Me Write sessions on Sunday and the Q&A times. Mary Robinette is incredibly generous with her expertise and her time." -Tara King
"I initially joined the Patreon as a way to throw a little more support behind an author whose work I loved, and thought I'd subscribe for a month or two at the class level. It's now two years at the class level and every month I learn something new or get a new angle to consider writing from. The community is welcoming and supportive (including towards marginalized community members): it's more than just 'must write 24/7,' it's a group of friends." -Dei W.
