Part of getting the new community instance (datavis.social) up and running was deciding on my profile header. I went with an IterativeArt piece I created with code and the text "F*ck Cancer".

I started working on this piece in the days after my diagnosis but before going in for surgery. Even with my frustrations and scary emotions about Cancer, that I was feeling at the time, I still wanted to make the piece beautiful. As usual :)

Hey vis.social!

Starting tomorrow, April 25th, @darth_mall will be helping out our moderation team as Admin.

I go in for surgery tomorrow, and expect to be in the hospital recovering for an additional 3-5 days.

If all goes as expected, I will be fully recovered in a month. But I'll be back online before then. :)

Editing to add: yep, it's Cancer. But hopefully, this surgery will take care of it.

It's never been acceptable.

Brilliant women who have done brilliant work have been forced into "housewife" roles for ages.

Julia Child was just one of the most famous ones, in recent history.

Thankfully, for all of us, she found a path that society accepted and embraced.

When I went for my CT scan last week, I couldn't help being reminded of the first episode of Zoey's Extraordinary Play List.

I'd tried re-watching it about a year ago, but her father's condition reminded me too much of how advanced my mom's Parkinson's was before she passed two years ago. It was too soon, for me.

But trying again tonight. And wow! I forgot how amazing this show was.

Just so very very good!

One of the things I love about sticky-notes is that they don't damage anything they're stuck to. So, I could maybe stick one to the edge of a mirror in the ladies room of a restaurant. And it wouldn't damage anything.

First of all, you are in good hands! Our moderation team is fantastic!

In terms of leadership, Evan ( @darth_mall ) is returning to help out with Admin duties, and help our moderation team, while I'm offline.

Um, so, I have cancer.

It looks like I should be ok. But it's a scary and risky path forward.

I could also be hit by a bus at any point.

This cancer thing is just pushing me to set up more robust emergency support for this community instance.

But the hospital I've been spending time at the last two weeks?

It's also a Children's Hospital.

Seeing these little kids. And their parents?

Yeah, it's late, even in San Francisco.

But I'd like to briefly re-introduce @darth_mall (Evan), who is rejoining our moderation team for a while.

I will be completely offline for some days in the near future, and he'll be filling in for me as Admin on those days.

I will continue to publicly document our moderation policies, especially how we've been dealing with spam waves, so there shouldn't be a lot of changes while I'm offline.
