It's Monday, so I'm starting new posts for my daily drawings.

Today, I'm playing with a bit of color gradient, starting in the center of these branches. It's very subtle, though.

Here's an in-progress photo

Thinking about a string of thoughts as a string of beads today.

I didn't get around to posting yesterday's drawing here, but it's on my Patreon and Ko-fi:

For the month of October, I'm participating in the annual drawing challenge. I'll be following some of the official Inktober prompts, but mostly the SciArt Inktober prompts. I will also be giving up my colorful inks and restricting myself to black ink.

Today, I'm following the prompt "lipid" and drawing some phospholipids.

Thinking about bubbles and branching trees while working on today's #inkyDays drawing.

I used to start new posts every week, but I'm doing it monthly now.

So this month's drawings are in these posts for my supporters on Patreon and Ko-fi:

Hey folks!

Please do NOT report artists for sharing links to where their art is available to purchase!

Just DO NOT be such a jerk!

If you want artists to keep sharing their work on mastodon, this whole "absolute no commercial posts at all" attitude has to stop. There is a huge difference between a big corporate ad campaign and an individual artist posting a link to their own art shop.

Edit/Update: Well, this blew up. I'm muting now, and won't see replies.

Wholly shit! The 'mean girls of mastodon' can be really mean, and unforgiving.

I may well have lost a valuable resource, over discussing regional usages of "guys" and "ya'll", because of someone who doesn't even live in the US.

Genuary 2024 Day 9: "ASCII"

I took the easy way with this challenge, and just used the letters in "ASCII" to create an abstract pattern.

Why am I so critical of big-tech data practices? It started, 10-ish years ago, I was one of the few women in the room in big tech conferences and witnessed very well attended public talks by data teams bragging about how they could tell when men were 'pleasuring themselves' or how they determined which 'girls' were 'nice' or 'sluts' based on their data and if they got a ride home in the morning.

Thinking about more rooms in the pattern I've been playing with over the last few days of drawings.

It's a new month, so I'm starting new posts for my supporters on Patreon and Ko-fi. I'll be posting this month's in-progress and finished drawings in these posts.

Unfortunately, there is a covid case in my home. We are isolating from each other.

I'm still testing negative. But will continue to test.

I was really hoping we could come through all of this without ever catching it.

Hey tech companies! Can you just stop it with all this taking data/images/text/voice/everything to train AI that has absolutely nothing to do with the products we pay you for? Or doing things like using our private video calls to train AI? Or to take our art that you host, to train AI?

Seriously! Enough is enough!

Editing to add: things aren't grim

The past year, running this instance, has been very challenging and expensive for me.

I need to know that enough folks want me to keep carrying on.

... I will keep working on sustainability and documentations and all that stuff.

The financial uncertainties have also been stressful. I want to get these more stable.

To be clear, I'm not burnt out. Just looking toward what is next here.

I've got major pre-event nervousness. The Maker Faire is three days! So that's a lot of anticipation nervousness!

Yep, total bundle of nervous energy.

Hey! Do you have ideas for drawing prompts? Especially for SciArt?

Reply with a single word prompt, and if we get enough, I'll work on making a prompt list tonight and post it for tomorrow.

Got my booster and flu shots before dinner today, and then went for dinner in The Castro.

Now, my arm hurts a lot, but I'm not super sleepy yet. Vaccines tend to knock me out.

I'd be doing this anyway, but I wanted to make sure I was fully boosted before the Maker Faire.

Over the years, I've played with code and particle systems to create art. In the systems I develop, each particle has an atomic number and interacts with other particles based on their atomic numbers. In various ways, they 'draw' when they collide.

In this piece, I'm combining one of these particle systems with the Fibonacci system.

The end result? Looks a bit like a quilt, I think.

Ok, I'm participating in this year. How could I resist all those great prompts...once they gave up that awful joke and posted actual prompts?

https://genuary.art/prompts

Today's prompt is "Particles", and I've posted some of my thinking and images my code produced on my Patreon and Ko-fi. These are public posts, not just for my suporters:

Recently, I've been experimenting with new versions of my Generative Nerves series and exploring more color combinations. I love how they look, all together like this.

These are still a work in progress. My first test prints, on aluminum, showed me that I still had some work to do on them before they're just right.

Hey vis.social folks!

First of all, you are in good hands! Our moderation team is fantastic!

In terms of leadership, Evan ( @darth_mall ) is returning to help out with Admin duties, and help our moderation team, while I'm offline.

Um, so, I have cancer.

It looks like I should be ok. But it's a scary and risky path forward.

I could also be hit by a bus at any point.

This cancer thing is just pushing me to set up more robust emergency support for this community instance.

Just out of curiosity, how many folks here know what the question "Red or Green?" means?

And if you do, which do you prefer? Do you ever answer with "christmas"?

Hey vis.social folks!

This is NOT twitter. Please don't treat our Local Timeline like it is.

Use CWs generously, with a sense of overabundance of thoughtfulness about triggering others.

If there food or alcohol? Use a CW

Is the topic very upsetting to most people? Use a CW!!!!

Alternatively, make your posts Unlisted.

Since the Genuary 'prompt list' is so disappointing, I'm going to use my SciArt Prompt Generator for my creative coding inspiration.

I think I'll use it to randomly pick a prompt for each time I want a challenge.

Would you like to join me? Or just suggest prompts to add? Or both?

Let's crowdsource this.

Reply with your prompt idea, and if you'd like to be credited for it on the project page: https://artatomic.itch.io/prompts

Ok..here it is...my fear about the Data Viz field...it's that as the field gets more prestige and pay goes up, that women who have been such a big part of the field's growth and development will be pushed out. Like they have in any field that starts getting more prestige and pay.

Does anyone know if the folks that organize are doing it again this year?

I'm not seeing any updates on their site: https://genuary.art/

My mom had very advanced Parkinson's symptoms before she passed.

Without physical and other therapies during the covid years, she declined very quickly.

We had to move her to a nursing home. While there, the insurance company that covered her medications tried to deny the patch-medication she was on and insisted she take less expensive pills instead.

Here's the thing. With Parkinson's the ability to swallow anything solid can decline.

We had to fight to get her medication she could take.
